    Modified Firearm Discharge Residue Analysis utilizing Advanced Analytical Techniques, Complexing Agents, and Quantum Chemical Calculations

    The use of gunshot residue (GSR) or firearm discharge residue (FDR) evidence faces some challenges because of instrumental and analytical limitations and the difficulties in evaluating and communicating evidentiary value. For instance, the categorization of GSR based only on elemental analysis of single, spherical particles is becoming insufficient because newer ammunition formulations produce residues with varying particle morphology and composition. Also, one common criticism about GSR practitioners is that their reports focus on the presence or absence of GSR in an item without providing an assessment of the weight of the evidence. Such reports leave the end-used with unanswered questions, such as “Who fired the gun?” Thus, there is a critical need to expand analytical capabilities and enhance the impact of the forensic scientist’s conclusions. To maximize the evidential value of GSR evidence, detection methods exploiting modern advancements in instrumentation must be explored and developed. This collection of work reviews the current literature review and illustrates a trend to investigate emerging methods to enhance IGSR analysis with a wider emphasis on OGSR compounds. Combining IGSR and OGSR components increases the confidence of detecting GSR on a collected sample. Overall, the development of novel analytical methods for GSR detection, the application of ground-breaking statistical methods to interpret GSR evidence using artificial intelligence (neural networks) and likelihood ratios to estimate the weight of the evidence, and the understating of the host-guest chemistry of GSR species is anticipated to provide a needed leap of knowledge in the community

    Negotiating multimodality in graphic narratives :an exploration of stream of consciousness techniques in Batman: The dark knight returns; Watchmen; and From hell

    This thesis will address the narratological strategies that the graphic novels Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, and From Hell employ in order to document the manner in which a stream of consciousness can be conveyed in a multimodal medium. The argument will propose that navigating Bruce Wayne, Walter Kovacs, and William Gull’s respective streams of consciousness becomes a journey that not only exposes the layers of psychological complexity that defines each novel’s anti-hero, but it also brings to task the array of creative options available to the polysemiotic structure of the medium itself. In order to provide a framework for this multivalent analytical model, chapter one will break down the format of the medium on a componential basis in order to highlight the complicit role of the reader in bringing a sense of cohesion to each fragmented narrative. Chapter two will address panoptic reading vectors by applying a close reading to contextual examples taken from representations of each protagonist’s stream of consciousness. Chapter three will address the privileged relationship that exists between thematically connected, yet spatially interspersed, panels that imbue each narrative with their respective protagonist’s ubiquitous psychological resonance. Chapter four will attempt to contemporise a theorised connection between Freud’s dream-work and the visualised realisation of each anti-hero’s thoughts by focusing specifically on the relationship between psychoanalysis and the image as promoted in the field of visual methodology. Chapter five will outline a mythopoeic reading of Bruce Wayne, Walter Kovacs, and William Gull by addressing the powerful sense of self-achieved ascension and resolute conviction they attain. Chapter six concludes this mythopoeic reading and gauges the subsequent downfall of each anti-hero by ascribing the three distinct stages to each one. In this light Bruce Wayne, Walter Kovacs, and William Gull are examined in relation to their self-imposed detachment, their acceptance of death, and the dissemination of their legacy into the collective unconscious.N

    History at Hand: An Analysis of Self-Guided Historic Walking Tours in Whatcom County, Washington

    This study explores and analyzes self-guided historic walking tours in Whatcom County, Washington, as part of Whatcom County’s heritage tourism offerings. Heritage Tourism a specialized field of tourism that has seen growth over the last several decades and has become the most successful specialized tourism market. Twelve self-guided historic walking tours were analyzed from an anthropological framework, exploring themes in multi-vocality, authenticity, sense of place, and audience engagement in interpretation. The narrative text from each tour booklet or pamphlet was analyzed using criteria developed by the author to examine the presence or absence of diversity, authenticity, audience engagement in the interpretation, and how the piece contributed to developing a sense of place for the location selected. Suggestions were made for the self-guided historic walking tours that did not meet the criteria for multi-vocality, authenticity, sense of place and audience engagement to improve the tours to include these themes in future presentations. Improvement to the presentations were informed using historic background information researched for this study using public history and ethnohistory approaches. The criteria developed by this study can be used by future historians to develop more inclusive and engaging presentations to attract a larger audience to popular tourist districts, helping to increase revenue and support local businesses
