    Uniform Partition in Population Protocol Model Under Weak Fairness

    We focus on a uniform partition problem in a population protocol model. The uniform partition problem aims to divide a population into k groups of the same size, where k is a given positive integer. In the case of k=2 (called uniform bipartition), a previous work clarified space complexity under various assumptions: 1) an initialized base station (BS) or no BS, 2) weak or global fairness, 3) designated or arbitrary initial states of agents, and 4) symmetric or asymmetric protocols, except for the setting that agents execute a protocol from arbitrary initial states under weak fairness in the model with an initialized base station. In this paper, we clarify the space complexity for this remaining setting. In this setting, we prove that P states are necessary and sufficient to realize asymmetric protocols, and that P+1 states are necessary and sufficient to realize symmetric protocols, where P is the known upper bound of the number of agents. From these results and the previous work, we have clarified the solvability of the uniform bipartition for each combination of assumptions. Additionally, we newly consider an assumption on a model of a non-initialized BS and clarify solvability and space complexity in the assumption. Moreover, the results in this paper can be applied to the case that k is an arbitrary integer (called uniform k-partition)

    In this paper, we focus on the uniform bipartition problem in the population protocol model. This problem aims to divide a population into two groups of equal size. In particular, we consider the problem in the context of arbitrary communication graphs. As a result, we investigate the solvability of the uniform bipartition problem with arbitrary communication graphs when agents in the population have designated initial states, under various assumptions such as the existence of a base station, symmetry of the protocol, and fairness of the execution. When the problem is solvable, we present protocols for uniform bipartition. When global fairness is assumed, the space complexity of our solutions is tight

    Social network sites (SNS), such as Facebook, Google+ and Twitter, have attracted hundreds of millions of users daily since their appearance. Within SNS, users connect to each other, express their identity, disseminate information and form cooperation by interacting with their connected peers. The increasing popularity and ubiquity of SNS usage and the invaluable user behaviors and connections give birth to many applications and business models. We look into several important problems within the social network ecosystem. The first one is the SNS advertisement allocation problem. The other two are related to trust mechanisms design in social network setting, including local trust inference and global trust evaluation. In SNS advertising, we study the problem of advertisement allocation from the ad platform's angle, and discuss its differences with the advertising model in the search engine setting. By leveraging the connection between social networks and hyperbolic geometry, we propose to solve the problem via approximation using hyperbolic embedding and convex optimization. A hyperbolic embedding method, \hcm, is designed for the SNS ad allocation problem, and several components are introduced to realize the optimization formulation. We show the advantages of our new approach in solving the problem compared to the baseline integer programming (IP) formulation. In studying the problem of trust mechanisms in social networks, we consider the existence of distrust (i.e. negative trust) relationships, and differentiate between the concept of local trust and global trust in social network setting. In the problem of local trust inference, we propose a 2-D trust model. Based on the model, we develop a semiring-based trust inference framework. In global trust evaluation, we consider a general setting with conflicting opinions, and propose a consensus-based approach to solve the complex problem in signed trust networks

    Mathematical analysis of scheduling policies in peer-to-peer video streaming networks

    Las redes de pares son comunidades virtuales autogestionadas, desarrolladas en la capa de aplicación sobre la infraestructura de Internet, donde los usuarios (denominados pares) comparten recursos (ancho de banda, memoria, procesamiento) para alcanzar un fin común. La distribución de video representa la aplicación más desafiante, dadas las limitaciones de ancho de banda. Existen básicamente tres servicios de video. El más simple es la descarga, donde un conjunto de servidores posee el contenido original, y los usuarios deben descargar completamente este contenido previo a su reproducción. Un segundo servicio se denomina video bajo demanda, donde los pares se unen a una red virtual siempre que inicien una solicitud de un contenido de video, e inician una descarga progresiva en línea. El último servicio es video en vivo, donde el contenido de video es generado, distribuido y visualizado simultáneamente. En esta tesis se estudian aspectos de diseño para la distribución de video en vivo y bajo demanda. Se presenta un análisis matemático de estabilidad y capacidad de arquitecturas de distribución bajo demanda híbridas, asistidas por pares. Los pares inician descargas concurrentes de múltiples contenidos, y se desconectan cuando lo desean. Se predice la evolución esperada del sistema asumiendo proceso Poisson de arribos y egresos exponenciales, mediante un modelo determinístico de fluidos. Un sub-modelo de descargas secuenciales (no simultáneas) es globalmente y estructuralmente estable, independientemente de los parámetros de la red. Mediante la Ley de Little se determina el tiempo medio de residencia de usuarios en un sistema bajo demanda secuencial estacionario. Se demuestra teóricamente que la filosofía híbrida de cooperación entre pares siempre desempeña mejor que la tecnología pura basada en cliente-servidor

    Broadcasting and transmission coordination for ad hoc and sensor networks

    This thesis studies the performance benefit of coordination in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and ad hoc networks (AHNs). WSNs are often comprised of a large number of inexpensive nodes with short battery life and limited communication and processing capabilities. AHNs are wireless networks operating without the benefits of network infrastructure (basestations) or centralized control. WSNs often require control messages be broadcast to the entire network. We study the performance of a class of randomized broadcast protocols that employ coordination to reduce the transmission of redundant messages and to reduce the occurrence of message collisions. Specifically, information coordination entails a potential transmitter employ local information to infer whether or not its potential receivers would be interested in its message, while communication coordination entails a potential transmitter employ local information to infer whether or not its transmission would interrupt other ongoing transmissions. The individual and joint benefits of these two forms of coordination are assessed through their impact on a variety of natural performance indicators.AHNs working with limited spectrum perform best when simultaneous transmissions are coordinated to avoid collisions. Optimal transmission coordination is a combinatorial optimization problem that is, in general, intractable for large size networks, even with global information and central control. Constraints on simultaneous transmissions may arise from both transceiver limitations (e.g., half-duplex designs) and from requirements on the signal to interference ratio. We study the transmission coordination optimization problem under a variety of natural communication constraints. Our work identifies particular instances where the problem may be solved by greedy algorithms, and studies the performance of several natural heuristic solutions.Ph.D., Computer Engineering -- Drexel University, 200

    This Special Issue, entitled "Women in Artificial Intelligence" includes 17 papers from leading women scientists. The papers cover a broad scope of research areas within Artificial Intelligence, including machine learning, perception, reasoning or planning, among others. The papers have applications to relevant fields, such as human health, finance, or education. It is worth noting that the Issue includes three papers that deal with different aspects of gender bias in Artificial Intelligence. All the papers have a woman as the first author. We can proudly say that these women are from countries worldwide, such as France, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Australia, Bangladesh, Yemen, Romania, India, Cuba, Bangladesh and Spain. In conclusion, apart from its intrinsic scientific value as a Special Issue, combining interesting research works, this Special Issue intends to increase the invisibility of women in AI, showing where they are, what they do, and how they contribute to developments in Artificial Intelligence from their different places, positions, research branches and application fields. We planned to issue this book on the on Ada Lovelace Day (11/10/2022), a date internationally dedicated to the first computer programmer, a woman who had to fight the gender difficulties of her times, in the XIX century. We also thank the publisher for making this possible, thus allowing for this book to become a part of the international activities dedicated to celebrating the value of women in ICT all over the world. With this book, we want to pay homage to all the women that contributed over the years to the field of AI
