Stability Analysis of Fixed-Point Digital Filters using Computer Generated Lyapunov Functions- Part I: Direct Form and Coupled Form Filters
We demonstrate the applicability of the constructive stability algorithm of Brayton and Tong in the stability analysis of fixed-point digital filters. In the present paper, we consider direct form and coupled form filters while in a companion paper we treat wave digital filters and lattice filters. We compare our results with existing ones which deal with either the global asymptotic stability of digital filters or with existence (resp., nonexistence) of limit cycles in digital filters. Several of the present results are new while some of the present results constitute improvements over existing results. In a few cases, the present results are more conservative than existing results. It is emphasized that whereas the existing results are obtained by several diverse methods, the present results are determined by one unified approach
NATURAL ALGORITHMS IN DIGITAL FILTER DESIGN
Digital filters are an important part of Digital Signal Processing (DSP), which plays
vital roles within the modern world, but their design is a complex task requiring a great
deal of specialised knowledge. An analysis of this design process is presented, which
identifies opportunities for the application of optimisation.
The Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Simulated Annealing are problem-independent
and increasingly popular optimisation techniques. They do not require detailed prior
knowledge of the nature of a problem, and are unaffected by a discontinuous search
space, unlike traditional methods such as calculus and hill-climbing.
Potential applications of these techniques to the filter design process are discussed,
and presented with practical results. Investigations into the design of Frequency Sampling
(FS) Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters using a hybrid GA/hill-climber proved
especially successful, improving on published results. An analysis of the search space
for FS filters provided useful information on the performance of the optimisation technique.
The ability of the GA to trade off a filter's performance with respect to several design
criteria simultaneously, without intervention by the designer, is also investigated.
Methods of simplifying the design process by using this technique are presented, together
with an analysis of the difficulty of the non-linear FIR filter design problem from
a GA perspective. This gave an insight into the fundamental nature of the optimisation
problem, and also suggested future improvements.
The results gained from these investigations allowed the framework for a potential
'intelligent' filter design system to be proposed, in which embedded expert knowledge,
Artificial Intelligence techniques and traditional design methods work together. This
could deliver a single tool capable of designing a wide range of filters with minimal
human intervention, and of proposing solutions to incomplete problems. It could also
provide the basis for the development of tools for other areas of DSP system design

Traditional modeling notions presume the existence of a truth model that relates the input to the output, without advanced knowledge of the input. This has led to the evolution of education and research approaches (including the available control and robustness theories) that treat the modeling and control design as separate problems. The paper explores the subtleties of this presumption that the modeling and control problems are separable. A detailed study of the nature of modeling errors is useful to gain insight into the limitations of traditional control and identification points of view. Modeling errors need not be small but simply appropriate for control design. Furthermore, the modeling and control design processes are inevitably iterative in nature
Study of numeric Saturation Effects in Linear Digital Compensators
Saturation arithmetic is often used in finite precision digital compensators to circumvent instability due to radix overflow. The saturation limits in the digital structure lead to nonlinear behavior during large state transients. It is shown that if all recursive loops in a compensator are interrupted by at least one saturation limit, then there exists a bounded external scaling rule which assures against overflow at all nodes in the structure. Design methods are proposed based on the generalized second method of Lyapunov, which take the internal saturation limits into account to implement a robust dual-mode suboptimal control for bounded input plants. The saturating digital compensator provides linear regulation for small disturbances, and near-time-optimal control for large disturbances or changes in the operating point. Computer aided design tools are developed to facilitate the analysis and design of this class of digital compensators
