    Spectrum analysis of LTI continuous-time systems with constant delays: A literature overview of some recent results

    In recent decades, increasingly intensive research attention has been given to dynamical systems containing delays and those affected by the after-effect phenomenon. Such research covers a wide range of human activities and the solutions of related engineering problems often require interdisciplinary cooperation. The knowledge of the spectrum of these so-called time-delay systems (TDSs) is very crucial for the analysis of their dynamical properties, especially stability, periodicity, and dumping effect. A great volume of mathematical methods and techniques to analyze the spectrum of the TDSs have been developed and further applied in the most recent times. Although a broad family of nonlinear, stochastic, sampled-data, time-variant or time-varying-delay systems has been considered, the study of the most fundamental continuous linear time-invariant (LTI) TDSs with fixed delays is still the dominant research direction with ever-increasing new results and novel applications. This paper is primarily aimed at a (systematic) literature overview of recent (mostly published between 2013 to 2017) advances regarding the spectrum analysis of the LTI-TDSs. Specifically, a total of 137 collected articles-which are most closely related to the research area-are eventually reviewed.     Chaotic Sand Cat Swarm Optimization

    In this study, a new hybrid metaheuristic algorithm named Chaotic Sand Cat Swarm Optimization (CSCSO) is proposed for constrained and complex optimization problems. This algorithm combines the features of the recently introduced SCSO with the concept of chaos. The basic aim of the proposed algorithm is to integrate the chaos feature of non-recurring locations into SCSO’s core search process to improve global search performance and convergence behavior. Thus, randomness in SCSO can be replaced by a chaotic map due to similar randomness features with better statistical and dynamic properties. In addition to these advantages, low search consistency, local optimum trap, inefficiency search, and low population diversity issues are also provided. In the proposed CSCSO, several chaotic maps are implemented for more efficient behavior in the exploration and exploitation phases. Experiments are conducted on a wide variety of well-known test functions to increase the reliability of the results, as well as real-world problems. In this study, the proposed algorithm was applied to a total of 39 functions and multidisciplinary problems. It found 76.3% better responses compared to a best-developed SCSO variant and other chaotic-based metaheuristics tested. This extensive experiment indicates that the CSCSO algorithm excels in providing acceptable results

    Efficient Real-Time Solutions for Nonlinear Model Predictive Control with Applications

    Nonlinear Model Predictive Control is an advanced optimisation methodology widely used for developing optimal Feedback Control Systems that use mathematical models of dynamical systems to predict and optimise their future performance. Its popularity comes from its general ability to handle a wide range of challenges present when developing control systems such as input/output constraints, complex nonlinear dynamics multi-variable systems, dynamic systems with significant delays as well as handling of uncertainty, disturbances and fault-tolerance. One of the main and most important challenges is the computational burden associated with the optimisation, particularly when attempting to implement the underlying methods in fast/real-time systems. To tackle this, recent research has been focused on developing efficient real-time solutions or strategies that could be used to overcome this problem. In this case, efficiency may come in various different ways from mathematical simplifications, to fast optimisation solvers, special algorithms and hardware, as well as tailored auto-generated coding tool-kits which help to make an efficient overall implementation of these type of approaches. This thesis addresses this fundamental problem by proposing a wide variety of methods that could serve as alternatives from which the final user can choose from depending on the requirements specific to the application. The proposed approaches focus specifically of developing efficient real-time NMPC methods which have a significantly reduced computational burden whilst preserving desirable properties of standard NMPC such as nominal stability, recursive feasibility guarantees, good performance, as well as adequate numeric conditioning for their use in platforms with reduced numeric precision such as ``floats'' subject to certain conditions being met. One of the specific aims of this work is to obtain faster solutions than the popular ACADO toolkit, in particular when using condensing-based NMPC solutions under the Real-Time Iteration Scheme, considered for all practical purposes the state-of-the-art standard real-time solution to which all the approaches will be bench-marked against. Moreover, part of the work of this thesis uses the concept of ``auto-generation'' for developing similar tool-kits that apply the proposed approaches. To achieve this, the developed tool-kits were supported by the Eigen 3 library which were observed to result in even better computation times than the ACADO toolkit. Finally, although the work undertaking by this thesis does not look into robust control approaches, the developed methods could be used for improving the performance of the underlying ``online'' optimisation, eg. by being able to perform additional iterations of the underlying SQP optimisation, as well as be used in common robust frameworks where multi-model systems must be simultaneously optimised in real-time. Thus, future work will look into merging the proposed methods with other existing strategies to give an even wider range of alternatives to the final user

    Fault tolerant flight control system design for unmanned aerial vehicles

    Safety and reliability of air vehicles is of the utmost importance. This is particularly true for large civil transport aircraft where a large number of human lives depend on safety critical design. With the increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in our airspace it is essential that UAV safety is also given attention to prevent devastating failures which could ultimately lead to loss of human lives. While civil aircraft have human operators, the pilot, to counteract any unforeseen faults, autonomous UAVs are only as good as the on board flight computer. Large civil aircraft also have the luxury of weight hence redundant actuators (control surfaces) can be installed and in the event of a faulty set of actuators the redundant actuators can be brought into action to negate the effects of any faults. Again weight is a luxury that UAVs do not have. The main objective of this research is to study the design of a fault tolerant flight controller that can exploit the mathematical redundancies in the flight dynamic equations as opposed to adding hardware redundancies that would result in significant weight increase. This thesis presents new research into fault tolerant control for flight vehicles. Upon examining the flight dynamic equations it can be seen, for example, that an aileron, which is primarily used to perform a roll manoeuvre, can be used to execute a limited pitch moment. Hence a control method is required that moves away from the traditional fixed structure model where control surface roles are clearly defined. For this reason, in this thesis, I have chosen to study the application of model predictive control (MPC) to fault tolerant control systems. MPC is a model based method where a model of the plant forms an integral part of the controller. An optimisation is performed based on model estimations of the plant and the inputs are chosen via an optimisation process. One of the main contributions of this thesis is the development of a nonlinear model predictive controller for fault tolerant flight control. An aircraft is a highly nonlinear system hence if a nonlinear model can be integrated into the control process the cross-coupling effects of the control surface contributions can be easily exploited. An active fault tolerant control system comprises not only of the fault tolerant controller but also a fault detection and isolation subsystem. A common fault detection method is based on parameter estimation using filtering techniques. The solution proposed in this thesis uses an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) for parameter estimation and controller updates. In summary the main contribution of this thesis is the development of a new active fault tolerant flight control system. This new innovative controller exploits the idea of analytical redundancy as opposed to hardware redundancy. It comprises of a nonlinear model predictive based controller using pseudospectral discretisation to solve the nonlinear optimal control problem. Furthermore a UKF is incorporated into the design of the active fault tolerant flight control system
