    Digital transformation of peatland eco-innovations (‘Paludiculture’): Enabling a paradigm shift towards the real-time sustainable production of ‘green-friendly’ products and services

    The world is heading in the wrong direction on carbon emissions where we are not on track to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C; Ireland is among the countries where overall emissions have continued to rise. The development of wettable peatland products and services (termed 'Paludiculture') present significant opportunities for enabling a transition away from peat-harvesting (fossil fuels) to developing 'green' eco-innovations. However, this must be balanced with sustainable carbon sequestration and environmental protection. This complex transition from 'brown to green' must be met in real time by enabling digital technologies across the full value chain. This will potentially necessitate creation of new green-business models with the potential to support disruptive innovation. This timely paper describes digital transformation of paludiculture-based eco-innovation that will potentially lead to a paradigm shift towards using smart digital technologies to address efficiency of products and services along with future-proofing for climate change. Digital transform of paludiculture also aligns with the 'Industry 5.0 -a human-centric solution'. However, companies supporting peatland innovation may lack necessary standards, data-sharing or capabilities that can also affect viable business model propositions that can jeopardize economic, political and social sustainability. Digital solutions may reduce costs, increase productivity, improve produce develop, and achieve faster time to market for paludiculture. Digitisation also enables information systems to be open, interoperable, and user-friendly. This constitutes the first study to describe the digital transformation of paludiculture, both vertically and horizontally, in order to inform sustainability that includes process automation via AI, machine learning, IoT-Cloud informed sensors and robotics, virtual and augmented reality, and blockchain for cyber-physical systems.     Sensor-based artificial intelligence to support people with cognitive and physical disorders

    A substantial portion of the world's population deals with disability. Many disabled people do not have equal access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, do not receive specific disability-related services, and experience exclusion from everyday life activities. One way to face these issues is through the use of healthcare technologies. Unfortunately, there is a large amount of diverse and heterogeneous disabilities, which require ad-hoc and personalized solutions. Moreover, the design and implementation of effective and efficient technologies is a complex and expensive process involving challenging issues, including usability and acceptability. The work presented in this thesis aims to improve the current state of technologies available to support people with disorders affecting the mind or the motor system by proposing the use of sensors coupled with signal processing methods and artificial intelligence algorithms. The first part of the thesis focused on mental state monitoring. We investigated the application of a low-cost portable electroencephalography sensor and supervised learning methods to evaluate a person's attention. Indeed, the analysis of attention has several purposes, including the diagnosis and rehabilitation of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. A novel dataset was collected from volunteers during an image annotation task, and used for the experimental evaluation using different machine learning techniques. Then, in the second part of the thesis, we focused on addressing limitations related to motor disability. We introduced the use of graph neural networks to process high-density electromyography data for upper limbs amputees’ movement/grasping intention recognition for enabling the use of robotic prostheses. High-density electromyography sensors can simultaneously acquire electromyography signals from different parts of the muscle, providing a large amount of spatio-temporal information that needs to be properly exploited to improve recognition accuracy. The investigation of the approach was conducted using a recent real-world dataset consisting of electromyography signals collected from 20 volunteers while performing 65 different gestures. In the final part of the thesis, we developed a prototype of a versatile interactive system that can be useful to people with different types of disabilities. The system can maintain a food diary for frail people with nutrition problems, such as people with neurocognitive diseases or frail elderly people, which may have difficulties due to forgetfulness or physical issues. The novel architecture automatically recognizes the preparation of food at home, in a privacy-preserving and unobtrusive way, exploiting air quality data acquired from a commercial sensor, statistical features extraction, and a deep neural network. A robotic system prototype is used to simplify the interaction with the inhabitant. For this work, a large dataset of annotated sensor data acquired over a period of 8 months from different individuals in different homes was collected. Overall, the results achieved in the thesis are promising, and pave the way for several real-world implementations and future research directions

    Modeling Human-Robot Interaction in Three Dimensions

    This dissertation answers the question: Can a small autonomous UAV change a person's movements by emulating animal behaviors? Human-robot interaction (HRI) has generally been limited to engagements with ground robots at human height or shorter, essentially working on the same two dimensional plane, but this ignores potential interactions where the robot may be above the human such as small un- manned aerial vehicles (sUAVs) for crowd control and evacuation or for underwater or space vehicles acting as assistants for divers or astronauts. The dissertation combines two approaches {behavioral robotics and HRI {to create a model of \Comfortable Distance" containing the information about human-human and human-ground robot interactions and extends it to three dimensions. Behavioral robotics guides the ex- amination and transfer of relevant behaviors from animals, most notably mammals, birds, and ying insects, into a computational model that can be programmed in simulation and on a sUAV. The validated model of proxemics in three dimensions makes a fundamental contribution to human-robot interaction. The results also have significant benefit to the public safety community, leading to more effective evacuation and crowd control, and possibly saving lives. Three findings from this experiment were important in regards to sUAVs for evacuation: i) expressions focusing on the person, rather than the area, are good for decreasing time (by 7.5 seconds, p <.0001) and preference (by 17.4 %, p <.0001), ii) personal defense behaviors are best for decreasing time of interaction (by about 4 seconds, p <.004), while site defense behaviors are best for increasing distance of interaction (by about .5 m, p <.003), and iii) Hediger's animal zones may be more applicable than Hall's human social zones when considering interactions with animal behaviors in sUAVs

It presents new ideas, original results and practical experiences in this increasingly important research field. The book consists of 23 chapters categorized into four sections. Since one of the most important means of human communication is facial expression, the first section of this book (Chapters 1 to 7) presents a research on synthesis and recognition of facial expressions. Given that we not only use the face but also body movements to express ourselves, in the second section (Chapters 8 to 11) we present a research on perception and generation of emotional expressions by using full-body motions. The third section of the book (Chapters 12 to 16) presents computational models on emotion, as well as findings from neuroscience research.
