Nan Levinson. Outspoken: free speech stories. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 2003.
Growing up, I was one of those children of the â50s and â60s who thought the right to freedom of speech was inviolable, incorruptible, and unassailable. Yet as Nan Levinsonâs book Outspoken: Free Speech Stories makes evident, our right to free expression is often contested, frequently assailed by those assuming a moral prerogative and restricted by concerned citizens who litigate minority voices into self-protective silence. So many books on current events lose relevance over time. Levinsonâs is not one of them

KONSEP PENDIDIKAN AKHLAK PERSFEKTIF HADIS (Telaah Terjemahan Kitab Al-Luâlu Wal MarjÄn)
Character degradation has occurred in many places, especially Indonesia. Whereas in Islam, the concept of morality has been formulated mainly on normative sources, especially the hadiths of the Prophet. Many Muslims lack hadith literature, especially for laymen, even though there are so many books of hadith translation and are suitable for reading for laymen. Among the translated books that can be accessed by is the book Al-Lu'lu Wal MarjÄn which contains all the sahih hadith with matan narrated equally from sahih Bukhari dan Muslim. In addition to being a recommendation related to the source of hadith literacy, this study also aims to explore how the concept of moral education in the form of narration and behavior exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad during his life. Researchers use qualitative research methods, qualitative research is research that raises information descriptively, both in the form of written words, spoken and the behavior of someone being studied. Qualitative is often referred to as research whose conditions are natural, so that the data collected is factual. The results of this study explain that the concept of moral education contained in the hadith that has been studied consists of 4 pillars, namely morals to Allah, the Messenger of Allah, fellow humans and oneself. implementation of morals to Allah by carrying out all commandments and avoiding all moral prohibitions to Allah by worship, to the Messenger of Allah by imitating him, , to one's fellow man by doing good, and to oneself by not burdening difficult things
So Many Books They Donât Even All Fit on the Bookshelfâ: An Examination of Low-income and Ethnic Minority Mothersâ Home Literacy Practices, Beliefs, and Influencing Factors
Given the need to enhance the academic language and early literacy skills of young children from low-income homes and the importance of the home literacy environment (HLE) in supporting childrenâs development, the purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the HLE of low-income African-American and Latino mothers of preschool children living in the United States. Specifically, research aims were to examine HLE practices, beliefs and influential factors as well as to compare the HLE of African-American and Latino, specifically Puerto Rican, families. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 African-American and 10 Puerto Rican mothers. Data were analyzed using the consensual qualitative research method. Twelve themes were identified: provision of educational materials, engagement with books, focus on print, implicit language opportunities, focus on other pre-academic skills, social interactions with books, influence of school, influence of other adults, parent reading interest/ability, child reading interest, parent commitment to childâs success, and family stressors. Few differences emerged between African-American and Puerto Rican mothers. Implications for language and literacy intervention development are discussed
Readability of Reading Texts in Alexanderâs Practice and Progress: An Integrated Course for Pre Intermediate Students
Determining the appropriate reading materials for students is not merely a matter for a teacherâs preference and viewpoint. The teacher must ensure the readability level of reading materials is on the same level as studentsâ since they easily attainthe information depends on the readability of the text. Since there are so many books in bookstores which can be recommended by the teacher as a learning material, Alexanderâs Practice and Progress is the common English book which provides a bunch of reading texts. In this case, this article reviews three readabilitymeasurements: Flesch-KincaidGrade Level, Coleman-Lieu Index, and SMOG, of reading texts provided by Alexanderâs Practice and Progress. Also, to what extent of studentâs level is presented based on those readability measurements
Steel My Soldiersâ Hearts,
There are so many books about the Vietnam War and the Vietnam experi- ence that the message of one more risks being lost amidst a vast ocean of tragic tales told with great pain. However, Hackworth and England have provided something more than a reminiscence of an Army combat unit in the postâTet Offensive world of Vietnam; they have presented readers with a tactical reform primer for infantry. All the information is there in stark GI English, beginning with the first sentence of chapter 1 (not repeated here out of delicacy), and fin- ishing up with the last sentences of the last chapter: âWe now need to fight smart as much as we need to get even. There is no other choice. We do it right or we lose. We winâor we die.
The secret chambers in the Chephren Pyramid
Pyramids are the greatest architectural achievement of ancient civilization,
so people all over the world are curious as to the purpose of such huge
constructions. No other structure has been studied as thoroughly, nor have so
many books and articles been written about it. We created a computer model of
the pyramid. To validate the model, we compare our calculations with the
experimental data of Luis W. Alvarez. The fact that the Egyptians set up 2.5
million stone blocks without any purpose seems to be unimaginable. Therefore,
we attempt to examine the internal structure of the pyramid using muon
tomography. With our measurements we performed and verified a calibration of
the attenuation of muons for primary beam momenta of 2.5 GeV/c and 3 GeV/c at
the T9 experimental area of CERN.Comment: The authors of the paper are winners of the CERN Beamline for Schools
