Articulation entre composantes verbale et graphico-gestuelle de l'interaction dans des réunions de conception architecturale

    Get PDF
This study is focused on the role of external representations, e.g., skteches, in collaborative architectural design. In particular, we analyse (1) the use of graphico-gestural modalities and, (2) the articulation modes between graphico-gestural and verbal modalities in design interaction. We have elaborated a first classification which distinguishes between two modes of articulation, articulation in integrated activities versus articulation in parallel activities

Organized complexity of the urban object

Over a half-century, space syntax has proven resilient as a theory and method for describing and analyzing the built environment from dwellings and complex buildings to cities. The paper briefly discusses resilience as a concept in the built environment and the foundations of space syntax itself. We summarize the body of the theoretical thinking in space syntax – laws of the urban object, generic function, principles of centrality and linearity, the design method of spatio-formal processes, and laws of spatial emergence-convergence – before offering a new hypothesis about laws of spatial conservation and spatial optimization at work in the built environment. The latter builds on Conroy-Dalton’s (2001) ideas about angularity and the conservation of linearity in movement. Both could provide an essential bridge with Carvalho and Penn’s (2004) concept of self-similarity in settlements, which relates to Batty and Longley’s (1994) notions of fractal cities. We argue the hypothesis of conservation-optimization defines the conceptual framework for the progressive and regressive practice of urban planning in settlements. We illustrate this theoretical discussion by demonstrating the resilience or replication of previous space syntax findings, and by drawing on new research about the history, spatial structure, and neighborhood logic of Metropolitan Doha.

Multi-resolution sketches and locality sensitive hashing for fast trajectory processing

International audienceSearching for similar GPS trajectories is a fundamental problem that faces challenges of large data volume and intrinsic complexity of trajectory comparison. In this paper, we present a suite of sketches for trajectory data that drastically reduce the computation costs associated with near neighbor search, distance estimation, clustering and classification, and subtrajectory detection. Apart from summarizing the dataset, our sketches have two uses. First, we obtain simple provable locality sensitive hash families for both the Hausdorff and Fréchet distance measures, useful in near neighbour queries. Second, we build a data structure called MRTS (Multi Resolution Trajectory Sketch), which contains sketches of varying degrees of detail. The MRTS is a user-friendly, compact representation of the dataset that allows to efficiently answer various other types of queries. Moreover, MRTS can be used in a dynamic setting with fast insertions of trajectories into the database. Experiments on real data show effective locality sensitive hashing substantially improves near neighbor search time. Distances defined on the skteches show good correlation with Fréchet and Hausdorff distances

This text illustrates the importance of literary travel for the understanding of geographic space. Our hypothesis is that the narratives of foreign travellers are an important source of analysis on the physical and moral history of the city of Lisbon, after the earthquake of 1755. Using qualitative methodologies, the study analyses the narratives of three literary journeys, which, detailed in the contexts, specific and general, allow us to understand the transformations of Lisbon Pombalina. It is therefore a literary geography that crosses different approaches to reading its time and the landscape perception contained in them.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Two Beginning Kindergarten Teachers Planning for Integrated Literacy Instruction

    Get PDF
This study reports the characteristics and strategies of 2 beginning kindergarten teachers\u27 planning for an integrated approach to literacy instruction. Using ethnographic observational and analytic techniques, we describe features and structures of integrated instruction as a planning \u27\u27problem.\u27\u27 The teachers\u27 problem-solving strategies under the conditions of this task are also examined. Results revealed the multiple and complex nature of integrated instruction as a planning problem. Based on domain and componential analyses, the task appeared to include at least 6 kinds of planning activity and to make multiple demands on the planners\u27 time, specificity of planning, level of pedagogical knowledge, and degree of work. Further analysis indicated a recurring pattern in the teachers\u27 organization of their activities, suggesting a 4-phase planning model. An examination of the teachers\u27 verbal accounts for indicators of mental processes used in their problem solving indicated strategies of the forward-search and problem-reduction type, with the former predominating. Features and structures of integrated instructional planning as a problem type are summarized from the teachers\u27 perspective as novices. We also discuss possible implications for teacher preparation and development and areas for further research

Bringing Treasures to the Surface - Iterative Design for the Library of Congress National Digital Library Program

    Get PDF
The Human-Computer Interaction Lab worked with a team of the Library of Congress (LC) to develop and test interface designs for LCUs National Digital Library Program. Three iterations are described and illustrate the progression of the design toward a compact design that minimizes scrolling and jumping and anchors users in a screen space that tightly couples search and results. Issues and resolutions are discussed for each iteration and reflect the challenges of incomplete metadata, data visualization, and the rapidly changing web environment
