Book Review of John Grisham’s Skipping Christmas

This book review is arranged with the purpose to show the strengths and weaknesses of a novel entitled Skipping Christmas, authored by an American author, John Grisham. This novel tells a story of the Kranks couple who wanted to skip Christmas to go on a cruise instead. This novel is the only comedy novel that is written by John Grisham who is a well-known thriller author. The strengths of the novels are the moral value of the novel, the cover design, and the greatness of the author’s name. This novel tells what Christmas is about. The greatness of the author’s name and the cover design are very powerful to attract people to buy and read the novel. The weaknesses of the novels are the dictions and the naratology of the novel that is too detailed. The author tends to use difficult words to tell the story. There are too many details in the novel to bore the readers. The main aim of this book review is to give a picture about the novel and a reference for the readers before reading the whole novel

AN ANALYSIS OF DIRECTIVE ILLOCUTIONARY ACT OF LUTHER CHARACTER IN THE NOVEL “SKIPPING CHRISTMAS” TRANSLATED INTO “ABSEN NATAL”

This thesis is entitled An Analysis of Directive Illocutionary Act of Luther Character in The Novel "Skipping Christmas" written by John Grisham translated into "Absen Natal". The researcher analyzes Luther Krank because he is the main character in the novel "Skipping Christmas". This study is aimed to analyze the translation of illocutionary act of the main character and the type of illocutionary act found in the main character. The design of this research was a descriptive qualitative. The unit of analysis in research was utterances of Luther character. The techniques of data analysis were categorizing the novel into classification speech act, tabulating data the novel in target language, looking for the translation pattern, and drawing the conclusion. The result of this analysis shows that there are 6 types of directive illocutionary act found. There are asking, commanding, ordering, suggesting, requesting and forbidding. Based on the data, there are 24 directive illocutionary acts utterances found in this novel. The type which has the most occurences is asking. It has 11 occurences or 45,8% from total utterances. From the translation patterns of directive illocutionary acts, there are suggesting to suggesting has 3 utterances, asking to asking which has 11 utterances, forbidding to forbidding has 1 utterance, commanding to commanding has 2 utterances, ordering to ordering has 4 utterances and requesting to requesting has 2 utterances. All directive illocutionary act are having the same structure and meaning from source language to target language. The translator has no difficulties in translating especially Luther character utterances

PERBEDAAN PERSEPSI ANTARA LUTHER KRANK DAN VIC FROHMEYER TERHADAP TRADISI NATAL DALAM NOVEL SKIPPING CHRISTMAS KARYA JOHN GRISHAM

This paper entitled “Dfferent Perception between Luther Krank and Vic Frohmeyer towards Christmas Tradtion in Grisham’s Skipping Christmas†is aimed at describing a phenomenon on Christmas tradition in Hemlock United States of America. The main problem is to discuss the different perception between Luther Krank as the main character and Vic Frohmeyer as the supporting charactertowards Christmas tradition. There arebthree kinds of approaches used, namely structural, sociological and cultural approaches. The result of analysis shows that the main different perception between Luther Krank and Vic Frohmeyer are refusal and support to the Christmas tradition. The difference is caused by their the basic personality which is influenced by the occupational status. Finally, their different perception is not always as a problem forever. Luther also belongs to round and dynamic character since she has a lot of efforts to skip Christmas and also undergoes changes at the end of the story. TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES OF ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS IN JACK CANFIELD AND MARK VICTOR HANSEN NOVEL'S "CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE MOTHER OF PRESCHOOLER'S SOUL"

Abstract: This research entitled Translation Techniques of Illocutionary Acts in Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen Novel's "Chicken Soup for the Mother of Preschooler's Soul". It is directed to find out the illocutionary acts and the translation techniques in translating quotes in target language. This research used descriptive-qualitative method.Based on the analysis, there are 3 illocutionary acts used including Representative occurs 65 times, represents 77,38%. Directive occurs 16 times, represents 19,05%. Commissive occurs 3 times, represents 3,57%. There are no Declaration and expressive illocutionary are found. The researcher also found there are 15 translation techniques by Molina Albir. They are Adaptation (4 data) 4,76%, Amplification (7 data) 8,33%, Pure Borrowing (1 data) 1,19%, Naturalized Borrowing (2 data) 2,38%, compensation (6 data) 7,14%, description (1 data) 1,19%, discursive creation (5 data) 5,95%, establish equivalent (9 data) 10,71%, generalization (1 data) 1,19%, linguistic amplification (15 data) 17,86%, linguistic compression (7 data) 8,33%, literal translation (12 data) 14,29%, modulation (2 data) 2,38%, particularization (3 data) 3,57%, reduction (4 data) 4,76%, transposition (5 data) 5.95%. The total data is 84. The technique of translation that the researcher found is dominated by Linguistic Amplification technique 17,86%. it is caused by illocutionary acts which contain mostly linguistic amplification that make the message more clearly to the target reader. From the findings, it concludes that the translator should know about the pragmatic, speech acts that involve illocutionary acts to maintain the intention from the author and understand the technique in translating text to get good translation to make the readers understand and get the message of the text.
