    SAR-Based Vibration Estimation Using the Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform

    A vibration estimation method for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is presented based on a novel application of the discrete fractional Fourier transform (DFRFT). Small vibrations of ground targets introduce phase modulation in the SAR returned signals. With standard preprocessing of the returned signals, followed by the application of the DFRFT, the time-varying accelerations, frequencies, and displacements associated with vibrating objects can be extracted by successively estimating the quasi-instantaneous chirp rate in the phase-modulated signal in each subaperture. The performance of the proposed method is investigated quantitatively, and the measurable vibration frequencies and displacements are determined. Simulation results show that the proposed method can successfully estimate a two-component vibration at practical signal-to-noise levels. Two airborne experiments were also conducted using the Lynx SAR system in conjunction with vibrating ground test targets. The experiments demonstrated the correct estimation of a 1-Hz vibration with an amplitude of 1.5 cm and a 5-Hz vibration with an amplitude of 1.5 mm

    Terahertz Micro-Doppler Radar for Detection and Characterization of Multicopters

    abstract: The micromotions (e.g. vibration, rotation, etc.,) of a target induce time-varying frequency modulations on the reflected signal, called the micro-Doppler modulations. Micro-Doppler modulations are target specific and may contain information needed to detect and characterize the target. Thus, unlike conventional Doppler radars, Fourier transform cannot be used for the analysis of these time dependent frequency modulations. While Doppler radars can detect the presence of a target and deduce if it is approaching or receding from the radar location, they cannot identify the target. Meaning, for a Doppler radar, a small commercial aircraft and a fighter plane when gliding at the same velocity exhibit similar radar signature. However, using a micro-Doppler radar, the time dependent frequency variations caused by the vibrational and rotational micromotions of the two aircrafts can be captured and analyzed to discern between them. Similarly, micro-Doppler signature can be used to distinguish a multicopter from a bird, a quadcopter from a hexacopter or a octacopter, a bus from a car or a truck and even one person from another. In all these scenarios, joint time-frequency transforms must be employed for the analysis of micro-Doppler variations, in order to extract the targets’ features. Due to ample bandwidth, THz radiation provides richer radar signals than the microwave systems. Thus, a Terahertz (THz) micro-Doppler radar is developed in this work for the detection and characterization of the micro-Doppler signatures of quadcopters. The radar is implemented as a continuous-wave (CW) radar in monostatic configuration and operates at a low-THz frequency of 270 GHz. A linear time-frequency transform, the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is used for the analysis the micro-Doppler signature. The designed radar has been built and measurements are carried out using a quadcopter to detect the micro-Doppler modulations caused by the rotation of its propellers. The spectrograms are obtained for a quadcopter hovering in front of the radar and analysis methods are developed for characterizing the frequency variations caused by the rotational and vibrational micromotions of the quadcopter.     Clutter Suppression via Hankel Rank Reduction for DFrFT-Based Vibrometry Applied to SAR

    Hankel rank reduction (HRR) is a method that, by prearranging the data in a Hankel matrix and performing rank reduction via singular value decomposition, suppresses the noise of a time-history vector comprised of the superposition of a finite number of sinusoids. In this letter, the HRR method is studied for performing clutter suppression in synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-based vibrometry. Specifically, three different applications of the HRR method are presented. First, resembling the SAR slow-time signal model, the HRR method is utilized for separating a chirp signal immersed in a sinusoidal clutter. Second, using simulated airborne SAR data with 10 dB of signal-to-clutter ratio, the HRR method is applied to perform target isolation and to improve the results of an SAR-based vibration estimation algorithm. Finally, the vibrometry approach combined with the HRR method is validated using actual airborne SAR data

    Loudspeaker analysis : a radar based approach

    Recently radar based micro-Doppler signature analysis has been successfully applied in various sectors including defence, biomedical and automotive. This paper presents the novel use of radar micro-Doppler for loudspeaker analysis. The approach offers the potential benefits of characterising the mechanical motion of a loudspeaker in order to identify defects and design issues. Compared to acoustic based approaches, the use of a radar allows reliable measurements in an acoustically noisy end of production line. In addition, when compared witha laser vibrometric approach the use of radar micro-Doppler reduces the number of measurements required and provides direct access to the information of the metallic components of the loudspeaker. In the paper experimental results and analysis of the micro-Doppler signatures of loudspeakers using low cost radar systems are presented. Based on Thiele&Small parameters, the voice coil displacement is modelled and micro-Doppler signatures for a single tone and a sine sweep stimulus are presented. Furthermore, in order to characterise the speaker with a single radar measurement, a methodology to measure mechanical frequency response of loudspeakers is also shown

Työssä esitellään erilaisia adaptiivisia menetelmiä, joiden avulla hengityksen ja sydämen värähtelyn aiheuttamaa micro-Doppler vaihemodulaatiota sisältävät eri vastaanottimien signaalit voidaan yhdistää. Työssä johdetaan lisäksi realistinen malli radiosignaalien etenemiselle ja heijastushäviöille, jota käytettiin moniantennitutkan simuloinnissa esiteltyjen menetelmien vertailemiseksi. Saatujen tulosten perusteella voidaan osoittaa, että adaptiiviset menetelmät parantavat langattoman elintoimintojen estimoinnin luotettavuutta, ja mahdollistavat monitoroinnin myös pienillä signaali-kohinasuhteen arvoilla.This thesis addresses the problem of vital sign estimation through the use of adaptive signal enhancement techniques with multiantenna continuous wave radar. The use of different adaptive processing techniques is proposed in a novel approach to combine signals from multiple receivers carrying the information of the cardiopulmonary micro-Doppler effect caused by breathing and heartbeat. The results are based on extensive simulations using a realistic signal propagation model derived in the thesis. It is shown that these techniques provide a significant increase in vital sign rate estimation accuracy, and enable monitoring at lower SNR conditions

    Novel measurement techniques for motion analysis and human recognition by using ultrasound and radiofrequency signals

    Human detection and identification has been constituting a fundamental application in everyday life, and it is assuming an increasing importance both within the commercial world and the scientific community. The applications cover a variety of different areas, such as security and surveillance, rescue/recovery of troubled people, medicine and gait analysis. Among the plenty of employed technologies, over the last few years, radar and ultrasound systems are gaining an increasing interest in human detection/identification scenario. They can effectively work in particular environments and situations where other systems may fail, like in the darkness, in smoky or foggy areas, or through not transparent obstacles. Many radar and ultrasound systems for human detection exploit Doppler and micro-Doppler effects to analyse the target motion. The micro-Doppler effect is a variant of the Doppler phenomenon which accounts also for micro-motions of the target superimposed to the bulk motion. Hence, it can be deployed to record the micro-Doppler characteristics of different moving targets, commonly referred as micro-Doppler signature. Human moving targets exhibit very distinctive and unique micro-Doppler signatures, which, if properly analysed, may be used to carry out human target recognition and classification tasks. Aim of this dissertation is to provide a general and technology independent measurement approach suitable for human identification purposes. The approach is a list of elementary blocks covering the measurement device definition and setup, the micro-Doppler signature acquisition and the algorithm for signatures analysis. In order to test the procedure, several experimental trials to collect micro-Doppler signatures have been performed, both in the ultrasonic and radio frequency domain. A novel algorithm has been also designed and developed to extract some particular features from the acquired signatures, to be used for target classification. Recognition performance has been assessed as a function of some key algorithm parameters to investigate the level of robustness of the proposed features. Results show that high level recognition performance can be achieved for different human activities and subjects, both employing ultrasounds and radio-frequency waves

    Radar-based Application of Pedestrian and Cyclist Micro-Doppler Signatures for Automotive Safety Systems

    Die sensorbasierte Erfassung des Nahfeldes im Kontext des hochautomatisierten Fahrens erfährt einen spürbaren Trend bei der Integration von Radarsensorik. Fortschritte in der Mikroelektronik erlauben den Einsatz von hochauflösenden Radarsensoren, die durch effiziente Verfahren sowohl im Winkel als auch in der Entfernung und im Doppler die Messgenauigkeit kontinuierlich ansteigen lassen. Dadurch ergeben sich neuartige Möglichkeiten bei der Bestimmung der geometrischen und kinematischen Beschaffenheit ausgedehnter Ziele im Fahrzeugumfeld, die zur gezielten Entwicklung von automotiven Sicherheitssystemen herangezogen werden können. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit werden ungeschützte Verkehrsteilnehmer wie Fußgänger und Radfahrer mittels eines hochauflösenden Automotive-Radars analysiert. Dabei steht die Erscheinung des Mikro-Doppler-Effekts, hervorgerufen durch das hohe Maß an kinematischen Freiheitsgraden der Objekte, im Vordergrund der Betrachtung. Die durch den Mikro-Doppler-Effekt entstehenden charakteristischen Radar-Signaturen erlauben eine detailliertere Perzeption der Objekte und können in direkten Zusammenhang zu ihren aktuellen Bewegungszuständen gesetzt werden. Es werden neuartige Methoden vorgestellt, die die geometrischen und kinematischen Ausdehnungen der Objekte berücksichtigen und echtzeitfähige Ansätze zur Klassifikation und Verhaltensindikation realisieren. Wird ein ausgedehntes Ziel (z.B. Radfahrer) von einem Radarsensor detektiert, können aus dessen Mikro-Doppler-Signatur wesentliche Eigenschaften bezüglich seines Bewegungszustandes innerhalb eines Messzyklus erfasst werden. Die Geschwindigkeitsverteilungen der sich drehenden Räder erlauben eine adaptive Eingrenzung der Tretbewegung, deren Verhalten essentielle Merkmale im Hinblick auf eine vorausschauende Unfallprädiktion aufweist. Ferner unterliegen ausgedehnte Radarziele einer Orientierungsabhängigkeit, die deren geometrischen und kinematischen Profile direkt beeinflusst. Dies kann sich sowohl negativ auf die Klassifikations-Performance als auch auf die Verwertbarkeit von Parametern auswirken, die eine Absichtsbekundung des Radarziels konstituieren. Am Beispiel des Radfahrers wird hierzu ein Verfahren vorgestellt, das die orientierungsabhängigen Parameter in Entfernung und Doppler normalisiert und die gemessenen Mehrdeutigkeiten kompensiert. Ferner wird in dieser Arbeit eine Methodik vorgestellt, die auf Grundlage des Mikro- Doppler-Profils eines Fußgängers dessen Beinbewegungen über die Zeit schätzt (Tracking) und wertvolle Objektinformationen hinsichtlich seines Bewegungsverhaltens offenbart. Dazu wird ein Bewegungsmodell entwickelt, das die nichtlineare Fortbewegung des Beins approximiert und dessen hohes Maß an biomechanischer Variabilität abbildet. Durch die Einbeziehung einer wahrscheinlichkeitsbasierten Datenassoziation werden die Radar-Detektionen ihren jeweils hervorrufenden Quellen (linkes und rechtes Bein) zugeordnet und eine Trennung der Gliedmaßen realisiert. Advances in microelectronics allow the use of high-resolution radar sensors that continuously increase measurement accuracy through efficient processes in angle as well as distance and Doppler. This opens up novel possibilities in determining the geometric and kinematic nature of extended targets in the vehicle environment, which can be used for the specific development of automotive safety systems. In this work, vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists are analyzed using a high-resolution automotive radar. The focus is on the appearance of the micro-Doppler effect, caused by the objects’ high kinematic degree of freedom. The characteristic radar signatures produced by the micro-Doppler effect allow a clearer perception of the objects and can be directly related to their current state of motion. Novel methods are presented that consider the geometric and kinematic extents of the objects and realize real-time approaches to classification and behavioral indication. When a radar sensor detects an extended target (e.g., bicyclist), its motion state’s fundamental properties can be captured from its micro-Doppler signature within a measurement cycle. The spinning wheels’ velocity distributions allow an adaptive containment of the pedaling motion, whose behavior exhibits essential characteristics concerning predictive accident prediction. Furthermore, extended radar targets are subject to orientation dependence, directly affecting their geometric and kinematic profiles. This can negatively affect both the classification performance and the usability of parameters constituting the radar target’s intention statement. For this purpose, using the cyclist as an example, a method is presented that normalizes the orientation-dependent parameters in range and Doppler and compensates for the measured ambiguities. Furthermore, this paper presents a methodology that estimates a pedestrian’s leg motion over time (tracking) based on the pedestrian’s micro-Doppler profile and reveals valuable object information regarding his motion behavior. To this end, a motion model is developed that approximates the leg’s nonlinear locomotion and represents its high degree of biomechanical variability. By incorporating likelihood-based data association, radar detections are assigned to their respective evoking sources (left and right leg), and limb separation is realized. In contrast to previous tracking methods, the presented methodology shows an increase in the object information’s accuracy.     Radar target micro-doppler signature classification

    This thesis reports on research into the field of Micro-Doppler Signature (μ-DS) based radar Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) with additional contributions to general radar ATR methodology. The μ-DS based part of the research contributes to three distinct areas: time domain classification; frequency domain classification; and multiperspective μ-DS classification that includes the development of a theory for the multistatic μ-DS. The contribution to general radar ATR is the proposal of a methodology to allow better evaluation of potential approaches and to allow comparison between different studies. The proposed methodology is based around a “black box” model of a radar ATR system that, critically, includes a threshold to detect inputs that are previously unknown to the system. From this model a set of five evaluation metrics are defined. The metrics increase the understanding of the classifier’s performance from the common probability of correct classification, that reports how often the classifier correctly identifies an input, to understanding how reliable it is, how capable it is of generalizing from the reference data, and how effective its unknown input detection is. Additionally, the significance of performance prediction is discussed and a preliminary method to estimate how well a classifier should perform is developed. The proposed methodology is then used to evaluate the μ-DS based radar ATR approaches considered. The time domain classification investigation is based around using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to identify radar targets based on their μ-DS. DTW is a speech processing technique that classifies data series by comparing them with a pre-classified reference dataset. This is comparable to the common k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN) algorithm, so k-NN is used as a benchmark against which to evaluate DTW’s performance. The DTW approach is observed to work well. It achieved high probability of correct classification and reliability as well as being able to detect inputs of unknown class. However, the classifier’s ability to generalize from the reference data is less impressive and it performed only slightly better than a random selection from the possible output classes. Difficulties in classifying the μ-DS in the time domain are identified from the k-NN results prompting a change to the frequency domain. Processing the μ-DS in the frequency domain permitted the development of an advanced feature extraction routine to maximize the separation of the target classes and therefore reduce the effort required to classify them. The frequency domain also permitted the use of the performance prediction method developed as part of the radar ATR methodology and the introduction of a na¨ıve Bayesian approach to classification. The results for the DTW and k-NN classifiers in the frequency domain were comparable to the time domain, an unexpected result since it was anticipated that the μ-DS would be easier to classify in the frequency domain. However, the naıve Bayesian classifier produced excellent results that matched with the predicted performance suggesting it could not be bettered. With a successful classifier, that would be suitable for real-world use, developed attention turned to the possibilities offered by the multistatic μ-DS. Multiperspective radar ATR uses data collected from different target aspects simultaneously to improve classification rates. It has been demonstrated successful for some of the alternatives to μ-DS based ATR and it was therefore speculated that it might improve the performance of μ-DS ATR solutions. The multiple perspectives required for the classifier were gathered using a multistatic radar developed at University College London (UCL). The production of a dataset, and its subsequent analysis, resulted in the first reported findings in the novel field of the multistatic μ-DS theory. Unfortunately, the nature of the radar used resulted in limited micro-Doppler being observed in the collected data and this reduced its value for classification testing. An attempt to use DTW to perform multiperspective μ-DS ATR was made but the results were inconclusive. However, consideration of the improvements offered by multiperspective processing in alternative forms of ATR mean it is still expected that μ-DS based ATR would benefit from this processing

    Development of a K-band FMCW flexible radar prototype for detection and classification of nano-drones

Conventional radar systems have been optimised to detect and classify bigger targets and are not specifically designed to detect nano-targets of less than 5 cm in size. Hence, this project aims to develop a radar system to detect and classify an insect-like size drone that corresponds to a low RCS. This will exhibit challenges due to the nature of the weak echoed signal that will be masked by an uninterested target with a stronger echoed signal. To tackle this sort of problem, micro Doppler extraction is applied for better target detection. This type of target that consists of a bladed propeller will give rise to a significant micro-Doppler signature that will contribute to the discernment of the interested target. An ad-hoc S-band FMCW radar prototype using off-the-shelf components An ad-hoc S-band FMCW radar prototype using off-the-shelf components has been successfully delivered. This prototype act as a groundwork for the next research phase of design and development for a higher frequency. Then, with the strong foundation of the S-band demonstrator, a flexible K-band FMCW radar prototype has successfully delivered aiming to meet the research purpose. The radar prototype offers a wide range of flexibility for the user to select the radar parameters (like operating frequency, ramp duration, bandwidth and integration time) and configure its performance. It will collect the signatures of real targets (nano-drone model) so that their performance can be assessed on experimental data. The results demonstrated that a nano-drone, a small size of less than 5 cm can be detected with the radar prototype developed.Ph
