    Nonparametric neighborhood statistics for MRI denoising

    technical reportThis paper presents a novel method for denoising MR images that relies on an optimal estimation, combining a likelihood model with an adaptive image prior. The method models images as random fields and exploits the properties of independent Rician noise to learn the higher-order statistics of image neighborhoods from corrupted input data. It uses these statistics as priors within a Bayesian denoising framework. This paper presents an information-theoretic method for characterizing neighborhood structure using nonparametric density estimation. The formulation generalizes easily to simultaneous denoising of multimodal MRI, exploiting the relationships between modalities to further enhance performance. The method, relying on the information content of input data for noise estimation and setting important parameters, does not require significant parameter tuning. Qualitative and quantitative results on real, simulated, and multimodal data, including comparisons with other approaches, demonstrate the effectiveness of the method

    The principal topic of this dissertation is the development and application of signal and image processing to Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) and radio astronomy;The dissertation consists of nine papers published or submitted for publication. Each of them has a specific and unique topic related to signal processing or image processing in NDE or radio astronomy. Those topics are listed in the following. (1) Time series analysis and modeling of Very Large Array (VLA) phase data. (2) Image analysis, feature extraction and various applied enhancement methods for industrial NDE X-ray radiographic images. (3) Enhancing NDE radiographic X-ray images by adaptive regional Kalman filtering. (4) Robotic image segmentation, modeling, and restoration with a rule based expert system. The enhancement part of the algorithm is based on Bayesian wavelet denoising, which has been chosen due to its exceptional ability to incorporate diverse a priori information into the process of image recovery. In particular, we demonstrate that, in dynamic settings, useful statistical priors can come both from some reasonable assumptions on the properties of the image to be enhanced as well as from the images that have already been observed before the current scene. Using such priors forms the main contribution of the present paper which is the proposal of the dynamic denoising as a tool for simultaneously enhancing and tracking image sequences.Within the proposed framework, the previous observations of a dynamic scene are employed to enhance its present observation. The mechanism that allows the fusion of the information within successive image frames is Bayesian estimation, while transferring the useful information between the images is governed by a Kalman filter that is used for both prediction and estimation of the dynamics of tracked objects. Therefore, in this methodology, the processes of target tracking and image enhancement "collaborate" in an interlacing manner, rather than being applied separately. The dynamic denoising is demonstrated on several examples of SAR imagery. The results demonstrated in this paper indicate a number of advantages of the proposed dynamic denoising over "static" approaches, in which the tracking images are enhanced independently of each other

    Gaussian mixture model classifiers for detection and tracking in UAV video streams.

    Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.Manual visual surveillance systems are subject to a high degree of human-error and operator fatigue. The automation of such systems often employs detectors, trackers and classifiers as fundamental building blocks. Detection, tracking and classification are especially useful and challenging in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based surveillance systems. Previous solutions have addressed challenges via complex classification methods. This dissertation proposes less complex Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) based classifiers that can simplify the process; where data is represented as a reduced set of model parameters, and classification is performed in the low dimensionality parameter-space. The specification and adoption of GMM based classifiers on the UAV visual tracking feature space formed the principal contribution of the work. This methodology can be generalised to other feature spaces. This dissertation presents two main contributions in the form of submissions to ISI accredited journals. In the first paper, objectives are demonstrated with a vehicle detector incorporating a two stage GMM classifier, applied to a single feature space, namely Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HoG). While the second paper demonstrates objectives with a vehicle tracker using colour histograms (in RGB and HSV), with Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) classifiers and a Kalman filter. The proposed works are comparable to related works with testing performed on benchmark datasets. In the tracking domain for such platforms, tracking alone is insufficient. Adaptive detection and classification can assist in search space reduction, building of knowledge priors and improved target representations. Results show that the proposed approach improves performance and robustness. Findings also indicate potential further enhancements such as a multi-mode tracker with global and local tracking based on a combination of both papers

    Simultaneous motion detection and background reconstruction with a conditional mixed-state markov random field

    In this work we present a new way of simultaneously solving the problems of motion detection and background image reconstruction. An accurate estimation of the background is only possible if we locate the moving objects. Meanwhile, a correct motion detection is achieved if we have a good available background model. The key of our joint approach is to define a single random process that can take two types of values, instead of defining two different processes, one symbolic (motion detection) and one numeric (background intensity estimation). It thus allows to exploit the (spatio-temporal) interaction between a decision (motion detection) and an estimation (intensity reconstruction) problem. Consequently, the meaning of solving both tasks jointly, is to obtain a single optimal estimate of such a process. The intrinsic interaction and simultaneity between both problems is shown to be better modeled within the so-called mixed-state statistical framework, which is extended here to account for symbolic states and conditional random fields. Experiments on real sequences and comparisons with existing motion detection methods support our proposal.     Seismic Signal Denoising Based on Surelet Transform for Energy Exploration

    Seismic signals are critical for subsurface energy exploration like oil, coal, and natural gas. Processing these signals while minimizing environmental impacts is crucial but lacking in several appropriate multi-scale geometric analysis (MGA) techniques. This study proposes using the Surelet transform, based on Stein’s unbiased risk estimate (SURE), for seismic denoising. The method combines SURE to find optimal thresholds and linear expansion for coefficient estimation. Experiments on two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) synthetic seismic data showed Surelet achieved higher peak signal-to-noise ratios (PSNR) and faster processing compared to wavelet, curvelet, and wave atom. For example, with 20% noise, Surelet improved PSNR by 6.11% and reduced time by 78.4% versus wave atom. The feasibility of the proposed technique for efficient seismic denoising was demonstrated, highlighting implications for enabling cleaner signals in energy exploration
