Optimizing production scheduling of steel plate hot rolling for economic load dispatch under time-of-use electricity pricing
Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity pricing provides an opportunity for industrial
users to cut electricity costs. Although many methods for Economic Load
Dispatch (ELD) under TOU pricing in continuous industrial processing have been
proposed, there are still difficulties in batch-type processing since power
load units are not directly adjustable and nonlinearly depend on production
planning and scheduling. In this paper, for hot rolling, a typical batch-type
and energy intensive process in steel industry, a production scheduling
optimization model for ELD is proposed under TOU pricing, in which the
objective is to minimize electricity costs while considering penalties caused
by jumps between adjacent slabs. A NSGA-II based multi-objective production
scheduling algorithm is developed to obtain Pareto-optimal solutions, and then
TOPSIS based multi-criteria decision-making is performed to recommend an
optimal solution to facilitate filed operation. Experimental results and
analyses show that the proposed method cuts electricity costs in production,
especially in case of allowance for penalty score increase in a certain range.
Further analyses show that the proposed method has effect on peak load

Robotized Warehouse Systems: Developments and Research Opportunities
Robotized handling systems are increasingly applied in distribution centers. They require little space, provide flexibility in managing varying demand requirements, and are able to work 24/7. This makes them particularly fit for e-commerce operations. This paper reviews new categories of robotized handling systems, such as the shuttle-based storage and retrieval systems, shuttle-based compact storage systems, and robotic mobile fulfillment systems. For each system, we categorize the literature in three groups: system analysis, design optimization, and operations planning and control. Our focus is to identify the research issue and OR modeling methodology adopted to analyze the problem. We find that many new robotic systems and applications have hardly been studied in academic literature, despite their increasing use in practice. Due to unique system features (such as autonomous control, networked and dynamic operation), new models and methods are needed to address the design and operational control challenges for such systems, in particular, for the integration of subsystems. Integrated robotized warehouse systems will form the next category of warehouses. All vital warehouse design, planning and control logic such as methods to design layout, storage and order picking system selection, storage slotting, order batching, picker routing, and picker to order assignment will have to be revisited for new robotized warehouses
Heuristic Algorithms to Minimize Total Weighted Tardiness on the Single Machine and Identical Parallel Machines with Sequence Dependent Setup and Future Ready Time
This study generates heuristic algorithms to minimize the total weighted tardiness on the single machine and identical parallel machines with sequence dependent setup and future ready time. Due to the complexity of the considered problem, we propose two new Apparent Tardiness Cost based (ATC-based) rules. The performances of these two rules are evaluated on the single machine and identical parallel machines. Besides of these two rules, we also propose a look-ahead identical parallel machines heuristic (LAIPM). When a machine becomes idle, it selects a job to process from available jobs and near future jobs. The proposed method, LAIPM, is evaluated with other look-ahead methods on the identical parallel machines
Advances and Novel Approaches in Discrete Optimization
Discrete optimization is an important area of Applied Mathematics with a broad spectrum of applications in many fields. This book results from a Special Issue in the journal Mathematics entitled âAdvances and Novel Approaches in Discrete Optimizationâ. It contains 17 articles covering a broad spectrum of subjects which have been selected from 43 submitted papers after a thorough refereeing process. Among other topics, it includes seven articles dealing with scheduling problems, e.g., online scheduling, batching, dual and inverse scheduling problems, or uncertain scheduling problems. Multi-agent path finding for UAV traffic management: Robotics track
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to provide a wide range of services, whereby UAV fleets will be managed by several independent service providers in shared low-altitude airspace. One important element, or redundancy, for safe and efficient UAV operation is pre-flight Conflict Detection and Resolution (CDR) methods that generate conflict-free paths for UAVs before the actual flight. Multi-Agent Path Finding (MAPF) has already been successfully applied to comparable problems with ground robots. However, most MAPF methods were tested with simplifying assumptions which do not reflect important characteristics of many real-world domains, such as delivery by UAVs where heterogeneous agents need to be considered, and new requests for flight operations are received continuously. In this paper, we extend CBS and ECBS to efficiently incorporate heterogeneous agents with computational geometry and we reduce the search space with spatio-temporal pruning. Moreover, our work introduces a âbatchingâ method into CBS and ECBS to address increased amounts of requests for delivery operations in an efficient manner. We compare the performance of our âbatchingâ approach in terms of runtime and solution cost to a âfirst-come first-servedâ approach. Our scenarios are based on a study on UAV usage predicted for 2030 in a real area in Japan. Our simulations indicate that our proposed ECBS based âbatchingâ approach is more time efficient than incremental planning based on Cooperative A*, and hence can meet the requirements of timely and accurate response on delivery requests to users of such UTM services

Adaptive Performance and Power Management in Distributed Computing Systems
The complexity of distributed computing systems has raised two unprecedented challenges for system management. First, various customers need to be assured by meeting their required service-level agreements such as response time and throughput. Second, system power consumption must be controlled in order to avoid system failures caused by power capacity overload or system overheating due to increasingly high server density. However, most existing work, unfortunately, either relies on open-loop estimations based on off-line profiled system models, or evolves in a more ad hoc fashion, which requires exhaustive iterations of tuning and testing, or oversimplifies the problem by ignoring the coupling between different system characteristics (\ie, response time and throughput, power consumption of different servers). As a result, the majority of previous work lacks rigorous guarantees on the performance and power consumption for computing systems, and may result in degraded overall system performance. In this thesis, we extensively study adaptive performance/power management and power-efficient performance management for distributed computing systems such as information dissemination systems, power grid management systems, and data centers, by proposing Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) control and hierarchical designs based on feedback control theory. For adaptive performance management, we design an integrated solution that controls both the average response time and CPU utilization in information dissemination systems to achieve bounded response time for high-priority information and maximized system throughput in an example information dissemination system. In addition, we design a hierarchical control solution to guarantee the deadlines of real-time tasks in power grid computing by grouping them based on their characteristics, respectively. For adaptive power management, we design MIMO optimal control solutions for power control at the cluster and server level and a hierarchical solution for large-scale data centers. Our MIMO control design can capture the coupling among different system characteristics, while our hierarchical design can coordinate controllers at different levels. For power-efficient performance management, we discuss a two-layer coordinated management solution for virtualized data centers. Experimental results in both physical testbeds and simulations demonstrate that all the solutions outperform state-of-the-art management schemes by significantly improving overall system performance
