Chaos in Vallis' asymmetric Lorenz model for El Nino

    Get PDF
AbstractWe consider Vallis’ symmetric and asymmetric Lorenz models for El Niño—systems of autonomous ordinary differential equations in 3D—with the usual parameters and, in both cases, by using rigorous numerics, we locate topological horseshoes in iterates of Poincaré return maps. The computer-assisted proofs follow the standard Mischaikow–Mrozek–Zgliczynski approach. The novelty is a dimension reduction method, a direct exploitation of numerical Lorenz-like maps associated to the two components of the Poincaré section

Complete Stability of Neural Networks With Extended Memristors

The article considers a large class of delayed neural networks (NNs) with extended memristors obeying the Stanford model. This is a widely used and popular model that accurately describes the switching dynamics of real nonvolatile memristor devices implemented in nanotechnology. The article studies via the Lyapunov method complete stability (CS), i.e., convergence of trajectories in the presence of multiple equilibrium points (EPs), for delayed NNs with Stanford memristors. The obtained conditions for CS are robust with respect to variations of the interconnections and they hold for any value of the concentrated delay. Moreover, they can be checked either numerically, via a linear matrix inequality (LMI), or analytically, via the concept of Lyapunov diagonally stable (LDS) matrices. The conditions ensure that at the end of the transient capacitor voltages and NN power vanish. In turn, this leads to advantages in terms of power consumption. This notwithstanding, the nonvolatile memristors can retain the result of computation in accordance with the in-memory computing principle. The results are verified and illustrated via numerical simulations. From a methodological viewpoint, the article faces new challenges to prove CS since due to the presence of nonvolatile memristors the NNs possess a continuum of nonisolated EPs. Also, for physical reasons, the memristor state variables are constrained to lie in some given intervals so that the dynamics of the NNs need to be modeled via a class of differential inclusions named differential variational inequalities

On the Application of PSpice for Localised Cloud Security

The work reported in this thesis commenced with a review of methods for creating random binary sequences for encoding data locally by the client before storing in the Cloud. The first method reviewed investigated evolutionary computing software which generated noise-producing functions from natural noise, a highly-speculative novel idea since noise is stochastic. Nevertheless, a function was created which generated noise to seed chaos oscillators which produced random binary sequences and this research led to a circuit-based one-time pad key chaos encoder for encrypting data. Circuit-based delay chaos oscillators, initialised with sampled electronic noise, were simulated in a linear circuit simulator called PSpice. Many simulation problems were encountered because of the nonlinear nature of chaos but were solved by creating new simulation parts, tools and simulation paradigms. Simulation data from a range of chaos sources was exported and analysed using Lyapunov analysis and identified two sources which produced one-time pad sequences with maximum entropy. This led to an encoding system which generated unlimited, infinitely-long period, unique random one-time pad encryption keys for plaintext data length matching. The keys were studied for maximum entropy and passed a suite of stringent internationally-accepted statistical tests for randomness. A prototype containing two delay chaos sources initialised by electronic noise was produced on a double-sided printed circuit board and produced more than 200 Mbits of OTPs. According to Vladimir Kotelnikov in 1941 and Claude Shannon in 1945, one-time pad sequences are theoretically-perfect and unbreakable, provided specific rules are adhered to. Two other techniques for generating random binary sequences were researched; a new circuit element, memristance was incorporated in a Chua chaos oscillator, and a fractional-order Lorenz chaos system with order less than three. Quantum computing will present many problems to cryptographic system security when existing systems are upgraded in the near future. The only existing encoding system that will resist cryptanalysis by this system is the unconditionally-secure one-time pad encryption

Tapered whisker reservoir computing for real-time terrain identification-based navigation

This paper proposes a new method for real-time terrain recognition-based navigation for mobile robots. Mobile robots performing tasks in unstructured environments need to adapt their trajectories in real-time to achieve safe and efficient navigation in complex terrains. However, current methods largely depend on visual and IMU (inertial measurement units) that demand high computational resources for real-time applications. In this paper, a real-time terrain identification-based navigation method is proposed using an on-board tapered whisker-based reservoir computing system. The nonlinear dynamic response of the tapered whisker was investigated in various analytical and Finite Element Analysis frameworks to demonstrate its reservoir computing capabilities. Numerical simulations and experiments were cross-checked with each other to verify that whisker sensors can separate different frequency signals directly in the time domain and demonstrate the computational superiority of the proposed system, and that different whisker axis locations and motion velocities provide variable dynamical response information. Terrain surface-following experiments demonstrated that our system could accurately identify changes in the terrain in real-time and adjust its trajectory to stay on specific terrain
