    UTHM water quality classification based on sub index

    River or stream at their source is unpolluted, but as water flow downstream, the river or lake is receiving point and non-point pollutant source. Ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3- N) and suspended solids (SS) strongly influences the dynamics of the dissolved oxygen in the water. Studies on monitoring this parameter were conducted for a river or lake but limited to the small man-made lake. This study is initiate to determine the changes in water quality of UTHM watershed as the water flows from upstream to downstream. The monitoring of NH3-N and TSS were monitored at two sampling schemes, 1) at the two-week interval and, 2) at a daily basis followed by the determination of the water quality sub-index particularly SIAN and SISS. The results showed that the two lakes in UTHM watershed were classified as polluted. In conclusion, the remedial action should be implemented to improve the water quality to meet the requirements at least to meet the recreational purpose

    Techniques for Wireless Channel Modeling in Harsh Environments

    With the rapid growth in the networked environments for different industrial, scientific and defense applications, there is a vital need to assure the user or application a certain level of Quality of Service (QoS). Environments like the industrial environment are particularly harsh with interference from metal structures (as found in the manufacturing sector), interference generated during wireless propagation, and multipath fading of the radio frequency (RF) signal all invite novel mitigation techniques. The challenge of achieving the benefits like improved energy efficiency using wireless is closely coupled with maintaining network QoS requirements. Assessment and management of QoS needs to occur, allowing the network to adapt to changes in the RF, information, and operational environments. The capacity to adapt is paramount to maintaining the required operational performance (throughput, latency, reliability and security). This thesis address the need for accurate radio channel modeling techniques to improve the performance of the wireless communication systems. Multiple different channel modeling techniques are considered including statistical models, ray tracing techniques, finite time-difference technique, transmission line matrix method (TLM), and stochastic differential equation-based (SDE) dynamic channel models. Measurement of ambient RF is performed at several harsh industrial environments to demonstrate the existence of uncertainty in channel behavior. Comparison of various techniques is performed with metrics including accuracy, applicability, and computational efficiency. SDE- and TLM-based methods are validated using indoor and outdoor measurements. Fast, accurate techniques for modeling multipath fading in harsh environments is explored. Application of dynamic channel models is explored for improving QoS of wireless communication system. The TLM-based models provide accurate site-specific path loss calculations taking into consideration materials and propagation characteristics of propagating environment. The validation studies confirm the technique is comparable with existing channel models. The TLM-based channel models is extended to compute the site-specific multipath characteristics of the radio channel eliminating the need for experimental measurement. The TLM-based simulator is also integrated with packet-level network simulator to perform end to end-to-end site specific calculation of wireless network performance. The SDE-channel models provide accurate online estimations of the channel performance along with accurate one-step prediction of the signal strength. The validation studies confirm the accuracy of the technique. Application of the SDE-based models for adaptive antenna control is formulated using online recursive estimation

    A Survey of Air-to-Ground Propagation Channel Modeling for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly for small UAVs, due to their affordable prices, ease of availability, and ease of operability. Existing and future applications of UAVs include remote surveillance and monitoring, relief operations, package delivery, and communication backhaul infrastructure. Additionally, UAVs are envisioned as an important component of 5G wireless technology and beyond. The unique application scenarios for UAVs necessitate accurate air-to-ground (AG) propagation channel models for designing and evaluating UAV communication links for control/non-payload as well as payload data transmissions. These AG propagation models have not been investigated in detail when compared to terrestrial propagation models. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is provided on available AG channel measurement campaigns, large and small scale fading channel models, their limitations, and future research directions for UAV communication scenarios

    Extending TDL based non-WSSUS vehicle-to-everything channel model

    In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten haben drahtlose Kommunikationssysteme eine rasante Entwicklung durchgemacht und es wurden viele Untersuchungen durchgeführt, seit Maxwell die Existenz von elektromagnetischer Wellen vorausgesagt hat. In den letzten Jahren hat die Forschung im Bereich der vehicle to X (V2X)-Kommunikation stetig zugenommen. V2X beschreibt die Fähigkeit, Daten zwischen einem Fahrzeug oder vehicle (V) und “allem” zu übertragen. In Zukunft könnten Fahrzeuge mit ihrer Umgebung kommunizieren, um Verkehrsunfälle zu vermeiden und Staus zu verringern. Dazu werden sie ihr Geschwindigkeits- und Positionsdaten über Ad-hoc-Fahrzeugnetze senden und empfangen können. Um die Verkehrssicherheit zu erhöhen, ist eine zuverlässige Kommunikationsverbindung notwendig. Die größte Herausforderung bei der Fahrzeugkommunikation besteht darin, dass sich die Eigenschaften des Physical Layers aufgrund der inhärenten Mobilität innerhalb des Kanals, der hohen Fahrzeuggeschwindigkeiten, der unterschiedlichen Antennenpositionen und der vielen Handover aufgrund kleinerer Zellen schnell ändern. Dies bringt eine Reihe von Herausforderungen in Bezug auf die Kanalcharakterisierung mit sich. Es handelt sich um einen Kanal mit starker Zeitvarianz und es treten viele Übergänge auf. Somit handelt es sich um einen nicht-stationärer (non-stationary) Kanal. Das Hauptziel dieser Untersuchung ist es, eine Methode zu finden, mit der der Kanal einer komplexen Umgebung in einer einfachen Form mit weniger strengen Beziehungen zur Geometrie dargestellt werden kann. Dabei werden die statistischen Eigenschaften ähnlich der Messdaten beibehalten. In dieser Arbeit werden nichtstationäre tapped delay line (TDL)-Modelle verwendet, um vehicle to infrastructure (V2I)-Kanäle zu beschreiben. Es wird eine neue Strategie zur Extraktion von TDL-Kanalmodellparametern aus Messdaten vorgeschlagen. Dieser Ansatz basiert auf einer bestehenden Methode zur Ableitung von Parametern für ein TDLModell. Es wird gezeigt, dass mit einer anderen Methode zur Auswahl der Taps die Anzahl der Abgriffe, die zur Rekonstruktion der root mean square delay spread (RMS-DS) eines Kanals erforderlich sind, erheblich reduziert werden kann. Ein neuer Ansatz zur überprüfen der Korrektheit der Ableitung der Kanalmodellparameter wird aufgezeigt. Die Durchführbarkeit der Methode wird anhand von Channel Sounding Messungen bestätigt. In dieser Dissertation wird ein Generator zur Erzeugung von Kanalimpulsantworten entwickelt und das nichtstationäre Verhalten der Kanäle durch die Verwendung eines ON/OFF-Prozesses beschrieben. Es werden Markov-Ketten unterschiedlicher Ordnung modelliert, um das nicht-stationäre Verhalten besser zu erfassen. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass Markov-Ketten erster Ordnung mit zwei Zuständen vorzuziehen sind, um das häufige ON/OFF-Verhalten von Mehrwegpfaden darzustellen, und dass die Markov-Modelle zweiter und dritter Ordnung keine großen Auswirkungen haben. Eine Methode zur Erweiterung eines single input single output (SISO)-TDL-Modells auf multiple input multiple output (MIMO) unter der non-wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (non-WSSUS)-Annahme wird eingeführt, um TDL-Kanalmodelle für V2I MIMO-Systeme zu entwickeln. Die Analyse bewertet die SISO- mit der MIMO-Konfiguration in Bezug auf die Kanalkapazität. Es werden verschiedene MIMO-Konfigurationen untersucht, und es wird gezeigt, dass die Position der Antennen eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Die Verwendung von nur vier Antennen am transmitter (Tx) und receiver (Rx), die in unterschiedliche Richtungen abstrahlen, führt zu einem qualitativen Sprung in der Leistungsfähigkeit des Systems.In the past decades, wireless communication systems have undergone rapid development, and many investigations have been done since Maxwell predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves. In recent years, vehicle to X (V2X) communication research has been growing steadily. V2X describes the ability to transmit data between a vehicle (V) and “everything”. In the future, vehicles might be able to communicate with their environment to prevent traffic accidents and reduce congestion by allowing vehicles to transmit and receive data through a vehicular ad hoc network at their speed and position. In order to achieve the ultimate goal of enhancing transportation safety, it is crucial to establish reliable communication links. The main challenge of vehicular communications introduces new properties because the physical layer properties are rapidly changing due to inherent mobility within the channel, high vehicle speeds, varying antenna positions, and many handovers due to smaller cells. This brings up a number of challenges in terms of channel characterization because it is a strong time-variant channel and many transitions occur; therefore, it is a non-stationary channel. In this thesis, non-stationary tapped delay line (TDL) models are used to describe the vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) channels. This thesis proposes a new strategy to extract TDL channel model parameters from measurement data. The proposed approach is based on an existing method to derive parameters for a TDL model. It will be shown that with a different method of choosing taps, the number of taps necessary to regenerate the root mean square delay spread (RMS-DS) of a channel can be significantly reduced. An approach is proposed to verify the correctness of the channel model parameters derivation. The feasibility of the method will be confirmed using channel-sounding measurements. This dissertation devises a generator to produce channel impulse responses (CIRs) and describes the non-stationary behavior of the channels via employing an ON/OFF process. Different order Markov chains are modeled with the aim of better capturing the non-stationary behavior. The investigation shows that first-order two-state Markov chains are preferable to represent multipath’s frequent ON/OFF behavior, and the second- and third-order Markov models do not make enormous effects. A method for extending a single input single output (SISO)-TDL model to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) under non-wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (non-WSSUS) assumption is introduced to develop TDL channel models for the V2I MIMO systems. The analysis evaluates SISO- with MIMO configuration in terms of channel capacity. Different MIMO configurations are explored, and it will be illustrated that the position of antennas plays an important role. Using only four antennas at the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) that radiate towards different directions will make a qualitative leap in the performance of the system

    Application of Visual Simulation in Communication Systems

    A communications system is a collection of individual communications networks, transmission systems, relay stations, tributary stations, and data terminal equipment (DTE) usually capable of interconnection and interoperation to form an integrated whole. The components of a communications system serve a common purpose, are technically compatible, use common procedures, respond to controls, and operate in unison. A typical communication link includes, at a minimum, three key elements: a transmitter, a communication medium (or channel), and a receiver. The ability to simulate all three of these elements is required in order to successfully model any end-to-end communication system. In order to achieve this target we have used a simulation software “VisSim” ,or Visual Simulator ,that allows us to use a graphical approach to simulation and modeling. With graphical programming, the diagram is the source code, depicted as an arrangement of nodes connected by wires. Each piece of data flows through the wires, to be consumed by nodes that transform the data mathematically or perform some action such as I/O. The visual simulator allows us to model end-to-end communication systems at the signal or physical level. We use VisSim/ Comm to build both transmitter and receiver models, filters and equalizers, as well as channel models and coding techniques from a first principles perspective, by selecting and connecting predefined blocks. In this project work we simulate a variety of models including analog, digital and mixed mode designs, and quickly simulate their behavior using the VisSim/Comm software and graphical programming

    Channel Estimation in Multicarrier Communication Systems

    The data rate and spectrum efficiency of wireless mobile communications have been significantly improved over the last decade or so. Recently, the advanced systems such as 3GPP LTE and terrestrial digital TV broadcasting have been sophisticatedly developed using OFDM and CDMA technology. In general, most mobile communication systems transmit bits of information in the radio space to the receiver. The radio channels in mobile radio systems are usually multipath fading channels, which cause inter-symbol interference (ISI) in the received signal. To remove ISI from the signal, there is a need of strong equalizer which requires knowledge on the channel impulse response (CIR).This is primarily provided by a separate channel estimator. Usually the channel estimation is based on the known sequence of bits, which is unique for a certain transmitter and which is repeated in every transmission burst. Thus, the channel estimator is able to estimate CIR for each burst separately by exploiting the known transmitted bits and the corresponding received samples. In this thesis we investigate and compare various efficient channel estimation schemes for OFDM systems which can also be extended to MC DS-CDMA systems.The channel estimation can be performed by either inserting pilot tones into all subcarriers of OFDM symbols with a specific period or inserting pilot tones into each OFDM symbol. Two major types of pilot arrangement such as block type and comb type pilot have been focused employing Least Square Error (LSE) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) channel estimators. Block type pilot sub-carriers is especially suitable for slow-fading radio channels whereas comb type pilots provide better resistance to fast fading channels. Also comb type pilot arrangement is sensitive to frequency selectivity when comparing to block type arrangement. However, there is another supervised technique called Implicit Training (IT) based channel estimation which exploits the first order statistics in the received data, induced by superimposing periodic training sequences with good correlation properties, along with the information symbols. Hence, the need for additional time slots for training the equalizer is avoided. The performance of the estimators is presented in terms of the mean square estimation error (MSEE) and bit error rate (BER)

    UWB Indoor Radio Propagation Modelling in Presence of Human Body Shadowing Using Ray Tracing Technique

    This paper presents a ray-tracing method for modelingUltra Wide Bandwidth indoor propagation channels. Avalidation of the ray tracing model with our indoor measurementis also presented. Based on the validated model, the multipathchannel parameter like the fading statistics and root mean squarerms delay spread for Ultra Wide bandwidth frequencies aresimply extracted. The proposed ray-tracing method is basedon image method. This is used to predict the propagation ofUWB electromagnetic waves. First, we have obtained that thefading statistics can be well fitted by log normal distributionin static case. Second, as in realistic environment we cannotneglect the significant impact of Human Body Shadowing andother objects in motion on indoor UWB propagation channel.Hence, our proposed model allows a simulation of propagationin a dynamic indoor environment. Results of the simulation showthat this tool gives results in agreement with those reported inthe literature. Specially, the effects of people motion on temporalchannel properties.
