    Heliocentric interplanetary low thrust trajectory optimization program, supplement 1, part 2

    The improvements made to the HILTOP electric propulsion trajectory computer program are described. A more realistic propulsion system model was implemented in which various thrust subsystem efficiencies and specific impulse are modeled as variable functions of power available to the propulsion system. The number of operating thrusters are staged, and the beam voltage is selected from a set of five (or less) constant voltages, based upon the application of variational calculus. The constant beam voltages may be optimized individually or collectively. The propulsion system logic is activated by a single program input key in such a manner as to preserve the HILTOP logic. An analysis describing these features, a complete description of program input quantities, and sample cases of computer output illustrating the program capabilities are presented

    A hybrid model of the Reynolds stress closure was developed. This model was tested for various sizes of step flow, and the computed Reynolds stress behavior was compared with experimental data. The third order closure model was reviewed. Transport equations for the triple velocity correlation were developed and implemented in a numerical code to evaluate the behavior of the triple velocity products in various regions of the flow field including recirculating, reattaching, and redeveloping flow domains

    The elementary classical models for idealized diffusion conditions are described, and the principles are then used in developing more realistic models. The practical models require some type of numerical analysis. The numerical techniques are outlined and details concerning their implementation are given. Some results are presented which were obtained with the computer programs implementing the numerical techniques with implicit and explicit methods. Special problems of impurity-rich interlayers forming between an oxide and silicon are considered. A set of computed curves for sheet resistance, junction depth, and oxide thickness for different diffusion schedules is included

    Parallel, Asynchronous Executive (PAX): System concepts, facilities, and architecture

    The Parallel, Asynchronous Executive (PAX) is a software operating system simulation that allows many computers to work on a single problem at the same time. PAX is currently implemented on a UNIVAC 1100/42 computer system. Independent UNIVAC runstreams are used to simulate independent computers. Data are shared among independent UNIVAC runstreams through shared mass-storage files. PAX has achieved the following: (1) applied several computing processes simultaneously to a single, logically unified problem; (2) resolved most parallel processor conflicts by careful work assignment; (3) resolved by means of worker requests to PAX all conflicts not resolved by work assignment; (4) provided fault isolation and recovery mechanisms to meet the problems of an actual parallel, asynchronous processing machine. Additionally, one real-life problem has been constructed for the PAX environment. This is CASPER, a collection of aerodynamic and structural dynamic problem simulation routines. CASPER is not discussed in this report except to provide examples of parallel-processing techniques

    A comprehensive computer program for the modeling of wind energy and storage systems utilizing any combination of five types of storage (pumped hydro, battery, thermal, flywheel and pneumatic) was developed. The level of detail of Simulation Model for Wind Energy Storage (SIMWEST) is consistent with a role of evaluating the economic feasibility as well as the general performance of wind energy systems. The software package consists of two basic programs and a library of system, environmental, and load components. The first program is a precompiler which generates computer models (in FORTRAN) of complex wind source storage application systems, from user specifications using the respective library components. The second program provides the techno-economic system analysis with the respective I/O, the integration of systems dynamics, and the iteration for conveyance of variables. SIMWEST program, as described, runs on the UNIVAC 1100 series computers
