Path signalling in a wireless back-haul network integrating unidirectional broadcast technologies
The black-haul infrastructures of today's wireless operators must support the triple-play services demanded by the market or regulatory bodies. To cope with increasing capacity demand, in our previous work, we have developed a cost-effective heterogeneous layer 2.5 wireless back-haul (WiBACK) architecture, which leverages the native multicast capabilities of broadcast technologies such as DVB to off-load high-bandwidth broadcast content delivery. Furthermore, our architecture provides support for unidirectional technologies on the data and the control plane. This adopts a centralized coordinator approach, in which coordinator nodes install so-called management and data pipes. No routing state is kept at plain WiBACK nodes, which merely store QoS-aware pipe forwarding state. Consequently, the architecture requires a reliable protocol to push resource allocation and pipe forwarding state into the network, considering possibly unidirectional connectivity. Such a protocol, whose task is related to MPLS label distribution, is essential during the initial forming of WiBACK topologies and during regular network operations to reliably manage the data pipes. In this paper, we present a novel approach to extend our IEEE 802.21-inspired WiBACK TransportService and, based upon this, the design of an RSVP-TE-style pipe signalling protocol using nested hop-by-hop request/response MIH transactions that supports signalling over unidirectional technologies. A thorough evaluation and successful testbed deployments show that this protocol reliably signals pipe state even under high loss conditions

ABSTRACT: This work proposes a set of laboratorial experiments developed in a sense to elucidate the main concepts of the MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) technology. Given the growing importance of this technology in the IP networking context, it is important that it can be conveniently taught in the various networking disciplines of the Integrated Master Courses of the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of the University of Aveiro. Therefore, several laboratory experiments were idealized in order to allow students to understand, in a simple way, the main MPLS functioning mechanisms. This protocol allows optimizing the transmission of packets through the network by using of labels, that is, it is possible to control how traffic flows through the network in order to optimize its performance and resource usage. The MPLS was developed in order to create a standardized solution that works in conjunction with the IP protocol, is able to send packets at a very high rate and has mechanisms that facilitate the management of the network resources, allowing a differentiated treatment of the traffic flows that have different quality of service (QoS) requirements.
The set of experiments was developed having in mind the fact that many of the practical networking classes that are given at DETI take place in network laboratories where students are divided in groups of two elements and each group has a limited (although usually high) number of network equipments. Therefore, the proposed experiments use, in general, 3 or 4 routers, which make them perfectly executable in the lab environment of our practical classes. The option of using the GNS3 network simulator was based on the fact that this environment allows, on one hand, maximizing the limited time that is available to carry out the work and overcoming the limited physical space that is available for its completion and, on the other hand, providing a versatile environment that does not require the use of any physical networking equipment.
Networks Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) have followed a long way since its creation, which intended to allow core routers to switch packets quickly using simple headers. Today MPLS networks are the foundation of many networks based on Internet Protocol (IP), adding value to the services of the Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as traffic engineering and Virtual Private Network (VPN). Expanding the use of MPLS to the edge of networks is showing some weaknesses of the protocol as transport technology. The proposed Multi-Protocol Label Switching – Transport Engineering (MPLS-TE) MPLS is precisely adapt to become more like a transport protocol.

Integration of unidirectional technologies into wireless back-haul architecture
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Docter of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Back-haul infrastructures of today's wireless operators must support the triple-play services demanded by the market or regulatory bodies. To cope with increasing capacity demand, the EU FP7 project CARMEN has developed a cost-effective heterogeneous
multi-radio wireless back-haul architecture, which may also leverage the native multicast
capabilities of broadcast technologies such as DVB-T to off-load high-bandwidth broadcast
content delivery. However, the integration of such unidirectional technologies into a packet-switched architecture requires careful considerations. The contribution of this thesis is the investigation, design and evaluation of protocols and mechanisms facilitating the integration of such unidirectional technologies into the wireless
back-haul architecture so that they can be configured and utilized by the spectrum and
capacity optimization modules. This integration mainly concerns the control plane and, in particular, the aspects related to resource and capability descriptions, neighborhood, link and Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) Label-Switched Path (LSP) monitoring, unicast and multicast LSP signalling as well as topology forming and maintenance. During the course of this study we have analyzed the problem space, proposed solutions to the resulting research questions and evaluated our approach. Our results show that the now Unidirectional Technology (UDT)-aware architecture can readily consider
Unidirectional Technologies (UDTs) to distribute, for example, broadcast content
Dada a importância desta tecnologia, é urgente desenvolver ferramentas
que permitam entender melhor a sua complexidade. O MPLS corre
A computação distribuída
adequadas e inovadoras apara a resolução deste problema.
The Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a highly scalable and
agnostic protocol to carry network data.
Operating at "Layer 2.5" of the OSI model, MPLS is an highperformance
mechanism that is used at the network backbone for
conveying data from one network node to the next.
The success of MPLS results from the fact that it enables the network to
carry all kinds of traffic, ranging from IP to layer 2 traffic, since it
encapsulates the packets of the diverse network protocols, allowing the
creation of "virtual links" between distant nodes.
MPLS belongs to the family of packet switched networks, where labels
are assigned to data packets that are forwarded based on decisions that
rely only on the label contents, without the need to examine the packets
contents. This allows the creation of end-to-end circuits across any type
of transport medium, using any protocol.
The MPLS design takes multiform transport technologies into account to
provide a unified data-carrying service, attempting simultaneously to
preserve traffic engineering and out-of-band control, a very attractive
characteristic for large-scale deployment. MPLS is the way to
consolidate many IP networks into a single one. Due to this obvious
potential, it is urgent to develop means and tools to better understand its
functioning and complexity.
MPLS normally runs at the backbone of Service Providers networks,
being deployed across an extensive set of expensive equipment. In order
to turn the study of MPLS feasible, emulation was considered as the best
solution. Currently, there are very good available tools to recreate, in a
lab environment, quite complicated scenarios.
However, the computational demand of the emulation is proportional to
the complexity of the project, becoming quickly unfeasible in a single
machine.
Fortunately, distributed computing or Cloud computing are suitable and
novel approaches to solve this computation problem.
So, this work aims to create some lab experiments that can
illustrate/demonstrate relevant aspects of the MPLS technology, using the
Dynamips emulator driven by the computational resources that were
made available by the Amazon ec2 cloud computing facilities. The
utilization of these emulation tools allows testing real networks and
service scenarios in a controlled environment, being able to debug their
configurations and optimize their performance before deploying them in
real operating networks

Encaminhamento robusto em redes GMPLS sobre SDH
Mestrado em Engenharia Electrónica e TelecomunicaçõesEsta dissertação endereça o problema do encaminhamento robusto em redes
GMPLS (Generalised Multi-Protocol Label Switching) sobre SDH (Synchronous
Digital Hierarchy).
This work addresses the problem of survivable routing in SDH (Synchronous
Digital Hierarchy) networks with a GMPLS (Generalised Multi-Protocol Label
Switching) routing plane. Currently, routing in SDH networks is done in a
centralized way by management means. SDH networks have failure recovery
exigent requirements so that network survivability is tipically implemented with
protection mechanisms. The most simple and efficient mechanisms are the
ones that for each service VC (Virtual Container) also establish one protection
VC through a path that does not include any of the nodes of the service VC
(besides the origin and destination nodes). These mechanisms garanty the
network survivability in case of a single node or link failure.
The motivation to add the GMPLS control plane on SDH networks is to enable
these networks to establish VCs by signalling and to allow as far as possible
routing in a distributed way reducing the network dependence on centralized
management systems. The GMPLS routing protocols are based on minimum
cost routing where either a static or variable cost value is assigned to each
network link and the routing paths are given by the minimum cost paths. When
there are routing constraints, the determination of the minimal cost paths is
applied only to links that observe the constraints.
In this work, it is proposed a strategy of cost assignement that depends not
only on the link load but also of the number and type of VCs that the link
suppports at each time. By simulation, it is shown that this strategy has better
performance than the traditional strategies of a static cost inversely proportional
to link capacity or of a cost that is proportional to link load at each time.
The proposed strategies use a routing algorithm that determines a minimal cost
node-disjoint pair of paths in the establishment of the pair service VC and
protection VC.
Finally, it is proposed an additional centralized scheme that when one VC is
released, all protection VCs are recalculated in order to reduce the network
overall blocking probability. This scheme allows an additional performance
improvement and does not cause any service disruption because in normal
operation the service VC’s are the only ones supporting traffic.
The performance of all routing algorithms are determined by simulation with a
discret event simulator developed for this purpose
This thesis aims to study the various types of survival schemes in highcapacity optical networks, in particularly in WDM networks (Wavelenth Division Multiplexing).
This was done initially carried out a literature review, which is structured in two stages. First is shown an overview of optical transport networks highlighted the evolution of WDM networks and its network components. Then, an overview of the survivable techniques in NGNs (Next Generation Networks) is shown. After a brief concepts exposure are shown the most important techniques in regard to the protection and restoration schemes for high capacity transmission systems.
They are also addressed the Control Plane, Data Plane and Management Plane of GMPLS (Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching) in the context of survivability of NGN.
Using a WDM network simulation model, based on ns-3, are analyzed three failure scenarios. They are, single-link failure, multiple-link failure and node failure.
Thus, it was possible to verify the behavior of the RWA algorithm (Routing and Wavelength Assignment), in such event of failure.
The RWA algorithm have allowed in the three failure scenarios, rerouting the channels to an alternate path, and thus ensures the continuity of transmission
