    Shift estimation method based fringe pattern profilometry and performance comparison

    In this paper, we present and study two approaches to fringe pattern profilometry (FPP) technique. Based on generalized analysis model for fringe pattern profilometry (FPP), Inverse Function based Shift Estimation (IFSE) and Gradient-based Shift Estimation (GSE) are proposed to calculate the shift between the projected and deformed fringe patterns. Further, computer simulations are utilized to compare the performance between these two methods. Meanwhile, we also compare these two algorithms with Phase Shift profilometry (PSP). It can be seen that both of these two shift estimation algorithms can significantly improve the measurement accuracy when the fringe patterns are nonlinearly distorted

    3-D measurement of solder paste using two-step phase shift profilometry

    A two-step phase shift profilometry method (2-step PSP) with prefiltering and postfiltering stages is proposed to reconstruct the 3-D profile of solder paste. Two sinusoidal patterns which are π-out-of-phase are used in the 3-D reconstruction. The new method uses only two fringe patterns rather than four as the four-step phase shift profilometry (4-step PSP). In Fourier transform profilometry (FTP), a bandpass filter is required to extract the fundamental spectrum from the background and higher order harmonics due to camera noise and imperfectness of the pattern projector. By using two π-out-of-phase sinusoidal fringe patterns, the background term can be eliminated directly by taking the average of the two fringe patterns. The fringe pattern which is close to its ideal form can also be recovered from the averaging process. Prefiltering is utilized in filtering raw images to remove noise causing higher order harmonics. Hilbert transform is then used to obtain the in-quadrate component of the processed fringe pattern.     Development of a calibration pipeline for a monocular-view structured illumination 3D sensor utilizing an array projector

    Commercial off-the-shelf digital projection systems are commonly used in active structured illumination photogrammetry of macro-scale surfaces due to their relatively low cost, accessibility, and ease of use. They can be described as inverse pinhole modelled. The calibration pipeline of a 3D sensor utilizing pinhole devices in a projector-camera setup configuration is already well-established. Recently, there have been advances in creating projection systems offering projection speeds greater than that available from conventional off-the-shelf digital projectors. However, they cannot be calibrated using well established techniques based on the pinole assumption. They are chip-less and without projection lens. This work is based on the utilization of unconventional projection systems known as array projectors which contain not one but multiple projection channels that project a temporal sequence of illumination patterns. None of the channels implement a digital projection chip or a projection lens. To workaround the calibration problem, previous realizations of a 3D sensor based on an array projector required a stereo-camera setup. Triangulation took place between the two pinhole modelled cameras instead. However, a monocular setup is desired as a single camera configuration results in decreased cost, weight, and form-factor. This study presents a novel calibration pipeline that realizes a single camera setup. A generalized intrinsic calibration process without model assumptions was developed that directly samples the illumination frustum of each array projection channel. An extrinsic calibration process was then created that determines the pose of the single camera through a downhill simplex optimization initialized by particle swarm. Lastly, a method to store the intrinsic calibration with the aid of an easily realizable calibration jig was developed for re-use in arbitrary measurement camera positions so that intrinsic calibration does not have to be repeated

    Acquisition of 3D shapes of moving objects using fringe projection profilometry

    Three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement for object surface reconstruction has potential applications in many areas, such as security, manufacturing and entertainment. As an effective non-contact technique for 3D shape measurements, fringe projection profilometry (FPP) has attracted significant research interests because of its high measurement speed, high measurement accuracy and ease to implement. Conventional FPP analysis approaches are applicable to the calculation of phase differences for static objects. However, 3D shape measurement for dynamic objects remains a challenging task, although they are highly demanded in many applications. The study of this thesis work aims to enhance the measurement accuracy of the FPP techniques for the 3D shape of objects subject to movement in the 3D space. The 3D movement of objects changes not only the position of the object but also the height information with respect to the measurement system, resulting in motion-induced errors with the use of existing FPP technology. The thesis presents the work conducted for solutions of this challenging problem

    Micro Fourier Transform Profilometry (μ\muFTP): 3D shape measurement at 10,000 frames per second

    Recent advances in imaging sensors and digital light projection technology have facilitated a rapid progress in 3D optical sensing, enabling 3D surfaces of complex-shaped objects to be captured with improved resolution and accuracy. However, due to the large number of projection patterns required for phase recovery and disambiguation, the maximum fame rates of current 3D shape measurement techniques are still limited to the range of hundreds of frames per second (fps). Here, we demonstrate a new 3D dynamic imaging technique, Micro Fourier Transform Profilometry (μ\muFTP), which can capture 3D surfaces of transient events at up to 10,000 fps based on our newly developed high-speed fringe projection system. Compared with existing techniques, μ\muFTP has the prominent advantage of recovering an accurate, unambiguous, and dense 3D point cloud with only two projected patterns. Furthermore, the phase information is encoded within a single high-frequency fringe image, thereby allowing motion-artifact-free reconstruction of transient events with temporal resolution of 50 microseconds. To show μ\muFTP's broad utility, we use it to reconstruct 3D videos of 4 transient scenes: vibrating cantilevers, rotating fan blades, bullet fired from a toy gun, and balloon's explosion triggered by a flying dart, which were previously difficult or even unable to be captured with conventional approaches.Comment: This manuscript was originally submitted on 30th January 1

    A 3D Sensor Based on a Profilometrical Approach

    An improved method which considers the use of Fourier and wavelet transform based analysis to infer and extract 3D information from an object by fringe projection on it is presented. This method requires a single image which contains a sinusoidal white light fringe pattern projected on it, and this pattern has a known spatial frequency and its information is used to avoid any discontinuities in the fringes with high frequency. Several computer simulations and experiments have been carried out to verify the analysis. The comparison between numerical simulations and experiments has proved the validity of this proposed method

    Three-Dimensional Shape Measurements of Specular Objects Using Phase-Measuring Deflectometry

    The fast development in the fields of integrated circuits, photovoltaics, the automobile industry, advanced manufacturing, and astronomy have led to the importance and necessity of quickly and accurately obtaining three-dimensional (3D) shape data of specular surfaces for quality control and function evaluation. Owing to the advantages of a large dynamic range, non-contact operation, full-field and fast acquisition, high accuracy, and automatic data processing, phase-measuring deflectometry (PMD, also called fringe reflection profilometry) has been widely studied and applied in many fields. Phase information coded in the reflected fringe patterns relates to the local slope and height of the measured specular objects. The 3D shape is obtained by integrating the local gradient data or directly calculating the depth data from the phase information. We present a review of the relevant techniques regarding classical PMD. The improved PMD technique is then used to measure specular objects having discontinuous and/or isolated surfaces. Some influential factors on the measured results are presented. The challenges and future research directions are discussed to further advance PMD techniques.     A spatial algorithm to reduce phase wraps from two dimensional signals in fringe projection profilometry

    © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm to reduce the number of phase wraps in two dimensional signals in fringe projection profilometry. The technique operates in the spatial domain, and achieves a significant computational saving with regard to existing methods based on frequency shifting. The method works by estimating the modes of the first differences distribution in each axial direction. These are used to generate a tilted plane, which is subtracted from the entire phase map. Finally, the result is re-wrapped to obtain a phase map with fewer wraps. The method may be able to completely eliminate the phase wraps in many cases, or can achieve a significant phase wrap reduction that helps the subsequent unwrapping of the signal. The algorithm has been exhaustively tested across a large number of real and simulated signals, showing similar results compared to approaches operating in the frequency domain, but at significantly lower running times

    3D Shape Measurement of Objects in Motion and Objects with Complex Surfaces

    This thesis aims to address the issues caused by high reflective surface and object with motion in the three dimensional (3D) shape measurement based on phase shifting profilometry (PSP). Firstly, the influence of the reflectivity of the object surface on the fringe patterns is analysed. One of the essential factors related to phase precision is modulation index, which has a direct relationship with the surface reflectivity. A comparative study focusing on the modulation index of different materials is presented. The distribution of modulation index for different material samples is statistically analysed, which leads to the conclusion that the modulation index is determined by the diffuse reflectivity. Then the method based on optimized combination of multiple reflected image patterns is proposed to address the saturation issue and improve the accuracy for the reconstruction of object with high reflectivity.A set of phase shifted sinusoidal fringe patterns with different exposure time are projected to the object and then captured by camera. Then a set of masks are generated to select the data for the compositing. Maximalsignal-to-noise ratio combining model is employed to form the composite images pattern. The composite images are then used to phase mapping.Comparing to the method only using the highest intensity of pixels for compositing image, the signal noise ratio (SNR) of composite image is increased due to more efficient use of information carried by the images
