    REVISITING THE CONCEPT OF LEVEL OF DETAIL IN 3D CITY MODELLING

    This review paper discusses the concept of level of detail in 3D city modelling, and is a first step towards a foundation for a standardised definition. As an introduction, a few level of detail specifications, outlooks and approaches are given from the industry. The paper analyses the general uncertainties and shortcomings around the concept of level of detail in 3D city modelling such as ordinality and inconsistencies, and identifies factors that constitute a specific level of detail. The paper proposes a framework for a new consistent LoD definition which would consolidate present and future LoD paradigms, gives an example of an LoD specification, discusses open questions such as the contexts for which 3D city models are used in practice, and gives prospects for a future quantification and sorting of levels of detail

    Geobim benchmark 2019: Design and initial results

    GeoBIM, the integration of 3D geoinformation (Geo) with building information models (BIM), is a subject of increasing attention in both domains. A well-known practical challenge for this integration is the mixed state of software support for open standards in each domain that would ease the integration. This is often known by practitioners but poorly documented. In order to solve this problem, we devised the GeoBIM benchmark, in which we compile the experiences of volunteering participants, who perform a guided study to test the software they are most familiar with against a few provided datasets structured in open standards. The aim of the tests is to improve the knowledge of the state of the art in the software support for GeoBIM open standards and to identify points for improvement. Disiplinlerarası çalışma kapsamında Çanakkale ili sınırları içinde yer alan Seddülbahir kalesinin Kuzey ve Güney kulesine çeşitli analiz yöntemleri uygulanmıştır. Kulelere ait Leica HDS 3000 yersel lazer tarayıcı ile elde edilmiş nokta bulutları kullanılarak Kuzey kuleye ait 3D semantik yapı bilgi modeli oluşturulmuştur. Söz konusu model kapsamında kullanılmak üzere hasar ve malzeme bilgilerini içeren “Masonry” adında uygulama etki alanı uzantısı (ADE) tasarlanmıştır. Ayrıntı düzeyi (LoD) dolayısıyla model yüzey hasar bilgilerinin modellenmesine olanak sağlamaktadır. Kuzey ve Güney kulelere ait nokta bulutları ayrıca kulelere ait sonlu elemanlar modelinin oluşturulmasında da kullanılmış ve gerçeleştirilen analizlerin sonuçlarından da faydalanılarak kulelerin varlıklarını devam ettirebilmeleri için gerekli onarım stratejileri önerilmiştir.In this study, processes carried out for generating a 3D semantic model and finite element model of a historical immovable was implemented and utilized. Documentation and structural assessment procedures require the integration of different measurement methods and interdisciplinary works. In scope of the interdisciplinary works, diverse analysis methods are applied to North and South towers of Seddülbahir fortress which is located in the province of Çanakkale. Using point clouds scanned with Leica HDS 3000 terrestrial laser scanner 3D semantic building information model for North Tower is generated. Level of Detail (LoD), the model has enables the user to model the surface damages observed on the structure. To be used within the scope of the model, a new Application Domain Extension (ADE) named “Masonry” containing damage and material properties is proposed. Point clouds of North and South towers are also used in the creation of Finite Element Model (FEM). Various analyses are carried out on FEM models of towers and the results are used to propose necessary intervention strategies for survival of cultural heritage.DoktoraPh

    Towards BIM/GIS interoperability: A theoretical framework and practical generation of spaces to support infrastructure Asset Management

    The past ten years have seen the widespread adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) among both the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) and the Asset Management/ Facilities Management (AM/FM) communities. This has been driven by the use of digital information to support collaborative working and a vision for more efficient reuse of data. Within this context, spatial information is either held in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models in a Common Data Environment (CDE). However, these being heterogeneous systems, there are inevitable interoperability issues that result in poor integration. For this thesis, the interoperability challenges were investigated within a case study to ask: Can a better understanding of the conceptual and technical challenges to the integration of BIM and GIS provide improved support for the management of asset information in the context of a major infrastructure project? Within their respective fields, the terms BIM and GIS have acquired a range of accepted meanings, that do not align well with each other. A seven-level socio-technical framework is developed to harmonise concepts in spatial information systems. This framework is used to explore the interoperability gaps that must be resolved to enable design and construction information to be joined up with operational asset information. The Crossrail GIS and BIM systems were used to investigate some of the interoperability challenges that arise during the design, construction and operation of an infrastructure asset. One particular challenge concerns a missing link between AM-based information and CAD-based geometry which hinders engineering assets from being located within the geometric model and preventing geospatial analysis. A process is developed to link these CAD-based elements with AM-based assets using defined 3D spaces to locate assets. However, other interoperability challenges must first be overcome; firstly, the extraction, transformation and loading of geometry from CAD to GIS; secondly, the creation of an explicit representation of each 3D space from the implicit enclosing geometry. This thesis develops an implementation of the watershed transform algorithm to use real-world Crossrail geometry to generate voxelated interior spaces that can then be converted into a B-Rep mesh for use in 3D GIS. The issues faced at the technical level in this case study provide insight into the differences that must also be addressed at the conceptual level. With this in mind, this thesis develops a Spatial Information System Framework to classify the nature of differences between BIM, GIS and other spatial information systems

    Integrated topological representation of multi-scale utility resource networks

    PhD ThesisThe growth of urban areas and their resource consumption presents a significant global challenge. Existing utility resource supply systems are unresponsive, unreliable and costly. There is a need to improve the configuration and management of the infrastructure networks that carry these resources from source to consumer and this is best performed through analysis of multi-scale, integrated digital representations. However, the real-world networks are represented across different datasets that are underpinned by different data standards, practices and assumptions, and are thus challenging to integrate. Existing integration methods focus predominantly on achieving maximum information retention through complex schema mappings and the development of new data standards, and there is strong emphasis on reconciling differences in geometries. However, network topology is of greatest importance for the analysis of utility networks and simulation of utility resource flows because it is a representation of functional connectivity, and the derivation of this topology does not require the preservation of full information detail. The most pressing challenge is asserting the connectivity between the datasets that each represent subnetworks of the entire end-to-end network system. This project presents an approach to integration that makes use of abstracted digital representations of electricity and water networks to infer inter-dataset network connectivity, exploring what can be achieved by exploiting commonalities between existing datasets and data standards to overcome their otherwise inhibiting disparities. The developed methods rely on the use of graph representations, heuristics and spatial inference, and the results are assessed using surveying techniques and statistical analysis of uncertainties. An algorithm developed for water networks was able to correctly infer a building connection that was absent from source datasets. The thesis concludes that several of the key use cases for integrated topological representation of utility networks are partially satisfied through the methods presented, but that some differences in data standardisation and best practice in the GIS and BIM domains prevent full automation. The common and unique identification of real-world objects, agreement on a shared concept vocabulary for the built environment, more accurate positioning of distribution assets, consistent use of (and improved best practice for) georeferencing of BIM models and a standardised numerical expression of data uncertainties are identified as points of development.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Ordnance Surve

    An investigation into semi-automated 3D city modelling

    Creating three dimensional digital representations of urban areas, also known as 3D city modelling, is essential in many applications, such as urban planning, radio frequency signal propagation, flight simulation and vehicle navigation, which are of increasing importance in modern society urban centres. The main aim of the thesis is the development of a semi-automated, innovative workflow for creating 3D city models using aerial photographs and LiDAR data collected from various airborne sensors. The complexity of this aim necessitates the development of an efficient and reliable way to progress from manually intensive operations to an increased level of automation. The proposed methodology exploits the combination of different datasets, also known as data fusion, to achieve reliable results in different study areas. Data fusion techniques are used to combine linear features, extracted from aerial photographs, with either LiDAR data or any other source available including Very Dense Digital Surface Models (VDDSMs). The research proposes a method which employs a semi automated technique for 3D city modelling by fusing LiDAR if available or VDDSMs with 3D linear features extracted from stereo pairs of photographs. The building detection and the generation of the building footprint is performed with the use of a plane fitting algorithm on the LiDAR or VDDSMs using conditions based on the slope of the roofs and the minimum size of the buildings. The initial building footprint is subsequently generalized using a simplification algorithm that enhances the orthogonality between the individual linear segments within a defined tolerance. The final refinement of the building outline is performed for each linear segment using the filtered stereo matched points with a least squares estimation. The digital reconstruction of the roof shapes is performed by implementing a least squares-plane fitting algorithm on the classified VDDSMs, which is restricted by the building outlines, the minimum size of the planes and the maximum height tolerance between adjacent 3D points. Subsequently neighbouring planes are merged using Boolean operations for generation of solid features. The results indicate very detailed building models. Various roof details such as dormers and chimneys are successfully reconstructed in most cases

    Extraction of Urban Environmental Quality Indicators using LiDAR-Based Digital Surface Models

    The visualization of specific 3-D urban scenes can be done calling upon different techniques, from those more traditional, such as photogrammetry, to the most advanced ones, such as laser scanning that uses different techniques and algorithms of selection and modelling of 3-D point clouds. The use and utility of this kind of data for the study of urban development remain however debatable. Indeed, indicators for urban development and durability are highly necessary and the best methodology to build them is largely open. This thesis anticipates the use of 2-D and 3-D models and data for the environmental analysis of cities, aiming to provide useful tools for urban planning and design. According to end-users requirements, the extraction of urban environmental quality (UEQ) indicators from 2-D and 3-D information using innovative methods is proposed and implemented, which is based on recent research on computational algorithms for the analysis, evaluation, management and design of the urban space. Moreover, results that can be obtained with different data sources and aggregation methods are compared. In particular, the main advantages of urban models generated from LiDAR data are highlighted. In consequence, an iterative process is proposed, involving professionals of various fields, aiming at improving the utility of those indicators for the support of applied decision activities related to the sustainable development of cities. This process is sub-divided in three correlated steps: A preliminary inquiry concerning the user requirements for the implementation of a 3-D project of the State/City of Geneva was launched. Based on the obtained replies, several potential applications related to both the definition and extraction of urban indicators were identified, and also, end-users were classified into 6 different domains: 1– architecture, urbanism and territory planning; 2– urban traffic (motor vehicles, trains and airplanes); 3– environment and energy; 4– pedestrian and cyclist mobility; 5– security and emergency situations management; 6– underground information; Based on point 1. and according to the assessment of the specific needs among each of these domains, several interviews were carried out in which 25 end-users decided to focus on UEQ indicators considering three main stakes: 1– assessment of the morphological properties of the urban texture; 2– exploration of the solar potential on the urban fabric; 3– estimation of the energy demand on the urban fabric. Many empirical case-studies are emphasized, mostly for the city of Geneva, and also for the cities of Lausanne and Florence. These indicators are extracted from the segmentation of planar roof areas using classified LiDAR point clouds and the use of image processing techniques based on Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and Digital Height Models (DHM), defined in this thesis as 2.5-Digital Urban Surface Models (2.5-DUSM) and normalized 2.5-Digital Urban Surface Models (n2.5-DUSM) respectively. These models are constructed in a step by step basis, using LiDAR and 2-D and 3-D vector data, thus applying different methods of interpolation and enhancement, whose accuracy is also evaluated on a statistical basis; Finally, an inquiry on how the same group of 25 end-users mentioned in point 1. perceives and interprets the different exploratory 2-D and 3-D geo-visualizations proposed for some of the UEQ indicators is undertaken, evaluating their utility according to the requirements previously defined
