Recovering 3D Shape with Absolute Size from Endoscope Images Using RBF Neural Network
Medical diagnosis judges the status of polyp from the size and the 3D shape of the polyp from its medical endoscope image. However the medical doctor judges the status empirically from the endoscope image and more accurate 3D shape recovery from its 2D image has been demanded to support this judgment. As a method to recover 3D shape with high speed, VBW (Vogel-Breuß-Weickert) model is proposed to recover 3D shape under the condition of point light source illumination and perspective projection. However, VBW model recovers the relative shape but there is a problem that the shape cannot be recovered with the exact size. Here, shape modification is introduced to recover the exact shape with modification from that with VBW model. RBF-NN is introduced for the mapping between input and output. Input is given as the output of gradient parameters of VBW model for the generated
sphere. Output is given as the true gradient parameters of true values of the generated sphere. Learning mapping with
NN can modify the gradient and the depth can be recovered according to the modified gradient parameters. Performance of
the proposed approach is confirmed via computer simulation and real experiment
Appearance Modelling and Reconstruction for Navigation in Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery is playing an increasingly important role for patient
care. Whilst its direct patient benefit in terms of reduced trauma,
improved recovery and shortened hospitalisation has been well established,
there is a sustained need for improved training of the existing procedures
and the development of new smart instruments to tackle the issue of visualisation,
ergonomic control, haptic and tactile feedback. For endoscopic
intervention, the small field of view in the presence of a complex anatomy
can easily introduce disorientation to the operator as the tortuous access
pathway is not always easy to predict and control with standard endoscopes.
Effective training through simulation devices, based on either virtual reality
or mixed-reality simulators, can help to improve the spatial awareness,
consistency and safety of these procedures.
This thesis examines the use of endoscopic videos for both simulation
and navigation purposes. More specifically, it addresses the challenging
problem of how to build high-fidelity subject-specific simulation environments
for improved training and skills assessment. Issues related to mesh
parameterisation and texture blending are investigated. With the maturity
of computer vision in terms of both 3D shape reconstruction and localisation
and mapping, vision-based techniques have enjoyed significant interest
in recent years for surgical navigation. The thesis also tackles the problem
of how to use vision-based techniques for providing a detailed 3D map and
dynamically expanded field of view to improve spatial awareness and avoid
operator disorientation. The key advantage of this approach is that it does
not require additional hardware, and thus introduces minimal interference
to the existing surgical workflow. The derived 3D map can be effectively
integrated with pre-operative data, allowing both global and local 3D navigation
by taking into account tissue structural and appearance changes.
Both simulation and laboratory-based experiments are conducted throughout
this research to assess the practical value of the method proposed

Endoscopy may also be used to guide the introduction of certain items (e.g., stents) into the body. Endoscopic navigation systems seek to integrate big data with multimodal information (e.g., computed tomography, magnetic resonance images, endoscopic video sequences, ultrasound images, external trackers) relative to the patient's anatomy, control the movement of medical endoscopes and surgical tools, and guide the surgeon's actions during endoscopic interventions. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to realize the next generation of context-aware navigated endoscopy. This review presents a broad survey of various aspects of endoscopic navigation, particularly with respect to the development of endoscopic navigation techniques. First, we investigate big data with multimodal information involved in endoscopic navigation. Next, we focus on numerous methodologies used for endoscopic navigation. We then review different endoscopic procedures in clinical applications. Finally, we discuss novel techniques and promising directions for the development of endoscopic navigation.X.L. acknowledges funding from the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities. Photometric stereo for strong specular highlights
Photometric stereo (PS) is a fundamental technique in computer vision known
to produce 3-D shape with high accuracy. The setting of PS is defined by using
several input images of a static scene taken from one and the same camera
position but under varying illumination. The vast majority of studies in this
3-D reconstruction method assume orthographic projection for the camera model.
In addition, they mainly consider the Lambertian reflectance model as the way
that light scatters at surfaces. So, providing reliable PS results from real
world objects still remains a challenging task. We address 3-D reconstruction
by PS using a more realistic set of assumptions combining for the first time
the complete Blinn-Phong reflectance model and perspective projection. To this
end, we will compare two different methods of incorporating the perspective
projection into our model. Experiments are performed on both synthetic and real
world images. Note that our real-world experiments do not benefit from
laboratory conditions. The results show the high potential of our method even
for complex real world applications such as medical endoscopy images which may
include high amounts of specular highlights
Numerical algorithms for perspective shape from shading
The Shape-From-Shading (SFS) problem is a fundamental and classic problem in computer vision. It amounts to compute the 3-D depth of objects in a single given 2-D image. This is done by exploiting information about the illumination and the image brightness. We deal with a recent model for Perspective SFS (PSFS) for Lambertian surfaces. It is defined by a Hamilton-Jacobi equation and complemented by state constraints boundary conditions. In this paper we investigate and compare three state-of-the-art numerical approaches. We begin with a presentation of the methods. Then we discuss the use of some acceleration techniques, including cascading multigrid, for all the tested algorithms. The main goal of our paper is to analyze and compare recent solvers for the PSFS problem proposed in the literature
Research on real-time physics-based deformation for haptic-enabled medical simulation
This study developed a multiple effective visuo-haptic surgical engine to handle a variety of surgical manipulations in real-time. Soft tissue models are based on biomechanical experiment and continuum mechanics for greater accuracy. Such models will increase the realism of future training systems and the VR/AR/MR implementations for the operating room
Intraoperative Endoscopic Augmented Reality in Third Ventriculostomy
In neurosurgery, as a result of the brain-shift, the preoperative patient models used as a intraoperative reference change. A meaningful use of the preoperative virtual models during the operation requires for a model update. The NEAR project, Neuroendoscopy towards Augmented Reality, describes a new camera calibration model for high distorted lenses and introduces the concept of active endoscopes endowed with with navigation, camera calibration, augmented reality and triangulation modules
3 Dimensional Dense Reconstruction: A Review of Algorithms and Dataset
3D dense reconstruction refers to the process of obtaining the complete shape
and texture features of 3D objects from 2D planar images. 3D reconstruction is
an important and extensively studied problem, but it is far from being solved.
This work systematically introduces classical methods of 3D dense
reconstruction based on geometric and optical models, as well as methods based
on deep learning. It also introduces datasets for deep learning and the
performance and advantages and disadvantages demonstrated by deep learning
methods on these datasets.Comment: 16 page
