    Modeshapes recognition using Fourier descriptors: a simple SHM example

    The main objective of this study is to develop an alternative criterion for modeshape classification, as the currently available one, MAC (Modal Assurance Criteria), is only a vector correlation representing modeshape similarities. This new method is developed to provide a set of features (Fourier Descriptors) for comparing modeshapes with “local” similarities of higher interest than “global” similarities using nodal lines. These lines are able to characterize modeshapes very easily. So when damage occurs, we are able to track the few descriptors changes to localise the damage. We validated our method on a CFCF plate demonstrating the quality of the damage localisation and possible use in a “mode tracking” application (space structure)

    Automatic inspection of analog and digital meters in a robot vision system

    A critical limitation of most of the robots utilized in industrial environments arises due to their inability to utilize sensory feedback. This forces robot operation into totally preprogrammed or teleoperation modes. In order to endow the new generation of robots with higher levels of autonomy techniques for sensing of their work environments and for accurate and efficient analysis of the sensory data must be developed. In this paper detailed development of vision system modules for inspecting various types of meters, both analog and digital, encountered in a robotic inspection and manipulation tasks are described. These modules are tested using industrial robots having multisensory input capability

    Image retrieval using modified generic fourier descriptors

    Generic Fourier Descriptors have been used for image retrieval [12]. In this paper, we have proposed a modification to the Generic Fourier Descriptors. We have performed experiments to compare the performance of the proposed method with the standard method. Tests were performed on Set B of the MPEG-7 Still Images Content Set [13]. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.<br /

    Coherence based histograms for shape retrieval

    Histograms have been used for Shape Representation and Retrieval. The drawback of the histograms method is that histograms can be same for dissimilar shapes, which renders the method less effective for retrieval of shapes. In this paper, we describe the concept of coherence. We show how coherence can be used with distance and angular histograms. We perform experiments to test the effectiveness of the proposed method. It is found that coherence improves accuracy of retrieval significantly.<br /

    PATSEEK: Content Based Image Retrieval System for Patent Database

    A patent always contains some images along with the text. Many text based systems have been developed to search the patent database. In this paper, we describe PATSEEK that is an image based search system for US patent database. The objective is to let the user check the similarity of his query image with the images that exist in US patents. The user can specify a set of key words that must exist in the text of the patents whose images will be searched for similarity. PATSEEK automatically grabs images from the US patent database on the request of the user and represents them through an edge orientation autocorrelogram. L1 and L2 distance measures are used to compute the distance between the images. A recall rate of 100% for 61% of query images and an average 32% recall rate for rest of the images has been observed

    Identification of microplastics in soils using 2D geometric shape descriptors

    Microplastics (MP), until now mostly studied in aquatic ecosystems, are also largely polluting terrestrial ecosystems, especially soil systems. Overall, there is a lack of robust and fast methods to identify, separate and eliminate MPs from soils. This paper is a first attempt to use 2D shape descriptors and Random Forest Machine Learning method in order to discriminate soil and MP particles. The results of this study demonstrate promising potential of the Machine Learning approach and shape descriptors in this relatively new scientific field of determining MPs in soils

    Data Fusion for Topographic Object Classification

    This paper presents research conducted into the automatic recognition of features and objects on topographic maps (for example, buildings, roads, land parcels etc.) using a selection of shape description methods developed mostly in the field of computer vision. In particular the work here focuses on the proposal and evaluation of fusion techniques (at the decision level of representation) for the classification of topographic data. A set of Ordnance Survey large-scale digital data (1:1250 and 1:2500) was used to evaluate the classification performance of the shape recognition methods used. Each technique proved partially successful in distinguishing classes of objects, however, no one technique provided a general solution to the problem. Further outlined experiments combine these techniques, using a data fusion methodology, on the real-world problem of checking and assigning feature codes in large-scale Ordnance Survey digital data

    An Accelerated Hierarchical Approach for Object Shape Extraction and Recognition

    We present a novel automatic supervised object recognition algorithm based on a scale and rotation invariant Fourier descriptors algorithm. The algorithm is hierarchical in nature to capture the inherent intra-contour spatial relationships between the parent and child contours of an object. A set of distance metrics are introduced to go along with the hierarchical model. To test the algorithm, a diverse database of shapes is created and used to train standard classification algorithms, for shape-labeling. The implemented algorithm takes advantage of the multi-threaded architecture and GPU efficient image-processing functions present in OpenCV wherever possible, speeding up the running time and making it efficient for use in real-time applications. The technique is successfully tested on common traffic and road signs of real-world images, with excellent overall performance that is robust to moderate noise levels
