    Independent Component Analysis of Self-Referential Processing in Women with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

    Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition than can develop after exposure, or repeated exposure, to a traumatic event. Recent changes to the diagnostic criteria for PTSD reflect a new emphasis on the dysregulation of emotions related to self-appraisal and self-referential processing (SRP). SRP concerns stimuli that are experienced as strongly related to one’s own person and can be measured using valenced stimuli that relate to the participant’s concept of self. These paradigms are referred to as self- referential processing tasks. The current study used data from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the activation of brain areas related to the self-referential processing of women. Activation patterns in women with PTSD were compared to those of healthy control women. Both participant groups completed the Visual-Verbal Self-Other Referential Processing Task (VV-SORP-T) to locate regions of interest in self- and other-referential processing in response to valenced social emotional stimuli. It was hypothesized that analyses would show between-group differences in three networks: (1) default mode network, (2) salience network, (3) executive control network. Analysis of the fMRI data was conducted using Group Independent Component Analysis of fMRI (GIFT) toolbox, software courtesy of Medical Image Analysis Lab, for use with the Matrix Laboratory Toolbox (MATLAB). One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to investigate between-group differences in the different conditions. Significant results found greater activation of the defualt mode network for the PTSD group. Significant differences were also found in the visual cortex and cerebellum. This study provides novel evidence for the role of the cerebellum in self-referential processing

    Subjective Experiences of Space and Time: Self, Sensation, and Phenomenal Time

    The investigation of subjective experiences (SEs) of space and time is at the core of consciousness research. The term ‘space’ includes the subject and objects. The SE of subject, I-ness, is defined as ‘Self’. The SEs of objects, subject’s external body, and subject’s internal states such as feelings, thoughts, and so on can be investigated using the proto-experience (PE)-SE framework. The SE of time is defined as ‘phenomenal time’ (which includes past, present and future) and the SE of space as ‘phenomenal space’. The three non-experiential materialistic models are as follows: (I) The quantum-dissipation model [25] can connect the discrete neural signals to classical electromagnetic field to ‘quantum field theory and chaos theory’ for explaining memory. (II) The soliton-catalytic model [8] hypothesizes that all living processes including micro- and macro-processes can be explained by catalysis process. (III) The ‘sensation from evolution of action’ model [13] proposes that SEs are internalized during evolution. All these models can address to some extent the function of structures, such as perception. They cannot address explanatory gap. The complementary experiential PE-SE framework [37] addresses this psycho-physical gap and elucidates the SEs of space and time

    Task-Related modulations of BOLD low-frequency fluctuations within the default mode Network

    Spontaneous low-frequency Blood-Oxygenation Level-Dependent (BOLD) signals acquired during resting state are characterized by spatial patterns of synchronous fluctuations, ultimately leading to the identification of robust brain networks. The resting-state brain networks, including the Default Mode Network (DMN), are demonstrated to persist during sustained task execution, but the exact features of task-related changes of network properties are still not well characterized. In this work we sought to examine in a group of 20 healthy volunteers (age 33 ± 6 years, 8 F/12 M) the relationship between changes of spectral and spatiotemporal features of one prominent resting-state network, namely the DMN, during the continuous execution of a working memory n-back task. We found that task execution impacted on both functional connectivity and amplitude of BOLD fluctuations within large parts of the DMN, but these changes correlated between each other only in a small area of the posterior cingulate. We conclude that combined analysis of multiple parameters related to connectivity, and their changes during the transition from resting state to continuous task execution, can contribute to a better understanding of how brain networks rearrange themselves in response to a task

    Capacity and tendency: A neuroscientific framework for the study of emotion regulation.

    It is widely accepted that the ability to effectively regulate one's emotions is a cornerstone of physical and mental health. As such, it should come as no surprise that the number of neuroimaging studies focused on emotion regulation and associated processes has increased exponentially in the past decade. To date, neuroimaging research on this topic has examined two distinct but complementary features of emotion regulation - the capacity to effectively utilize a strategy to regulate emotion and to a lesser extent, the tendency to choose to regulate. However, theoretical accounts of emotion regulation have only recently begun to distinguish capacity from tendency. In the present review, we provide a novel framework for conceptualizing these two intertwined, yet distinct, facets of emotion regulation. First we characterize brain regions that support emotion generation and are thus targeted by emotion regulation. Next, we synthesize findings from the dozens of neuroimaging studies that have examined emotion regulation capacity, focusing in particular on the most commonly studied emotion regulation strategy - reappraisal. Finally, we discuss emerging neuroimaging research examining state and trait regulatory tendencies. We conclude by integrating findings from neuroimaging research on emotion regulation capacity and tendency and suggest ways that this integrated model can inform basic and translational neuroscientific research on emotion regulation

    A review of self-processing biases in cognition

    When cues in the environment are associated with self (e.g., one’s own name, face, or coffee cup), these items trigger processing biases such as increased attentional focus, perceptual prioritization and memorial support. This paper reviews the existing literature on self-processing biases before introducing a series of studies that provide new insight into the influence of the self on cognition. In particular, the studies examine affective and memorial biases for self-relevant stimuli, and their flexible application in response to different task demands. We conclude that self-processing biases function to ensure that self-relevant information is attended to and preferentially processed because this is a perpetual goal of the self-system. However, contrary task-demands or priming can have an attenuating effect on their influence, speaking to the complexity and dynamism of the self-processing system in cognition
