    Retrofit self-optimizing control of Tennessee Eastman process

    This paper considers near-optimal operation of the Tennessee Eastman (TE) process by using a retrofit self-optimizing control (SOC) approach. Motivated by the factor that most chemical plants in operation have already been equipped with a workable control system for regulatory control, we propose to improve the economic performance by controlling some self-optimizing controlled variables (CVs). Different from traditional SOC methods, the proposed retrofit SOC approach improves economic optimality of operation through newly added cascaded SOC loops, where carefully selected SOC CVs are maintained at constant by adjusting set-points of the existing regulatory control loops. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the retrofit SOC proposed, we adopted measurement combinations as the CVs for the TE process, so that the economic cost is further reduced comparing to existing studies where single measurements are controlled. The optimality of the designed control architecture is validated through both steady state analysis and dynamic simulations

    Self Optimizing Control Of An Evaporation Process Under Noisy Measurements

    Recently, Cao (2004) presented a decentralized cascade self-optimizing control strategy and implemented on an evaporation process. In this method, the local optimal condition of a self optimizing control system is derived and this optimal condition is expressed as a gradient function in terms of the existing process measurements. This gradient function can then be used as a controlled variable to achieve local self optimization. Good results were obtained subject to noise free measurements but the performance deteriorates when measurement noise presents. This paper presents a method to overcome the detrimental effect of measurement noises on self-optimising control. Filtering the process measurements in conjunction with self-optimising control can reduce the effect of measurement noise on the process performance. The benefit of this method is quantified in terms of the total operating cost reduction compared to non-filtered gradient control. Operating cost comparison of a 10 hour period for various cases subject to the same disturbances clearly shows that the implementation of the proposed strategy reduces the operating cost

    Self-optimizing control is a strategy for selecting controlled variables. It is distinguished by the fact that an economic objective function is adopted as a selection criterion. The aim is to systematically select the controlled variables such that by controlling them at constant setpoints, the impact of uncertain and varying disturbances on the economic optimality is minimized. If a selection leads to an acceptable economic loss compared to perfectly optimal operation then the chosen control structure is referred to as “self-optimizing”. In this comprehensive survey on methods for finding self-optimizing controlled variables we summarize the progress made during the last fifteen years. In particular, we present brute-force methods, local methods based on linearization, data and regression based methods, and methods for finding nonlinear controlled variables for polynomial systems. We also discuss important related topics such as handling changing active constraints. Finally, we point out open problems and directions for future research

    Subset measurement selection for globally self-optimizing control of Tennessee Eastman process

    The concept of globally optimal controlled variable selection has recently been proposed to improve self-optimizing control performance of traditional local approaches. However, the associated measurement subset selection problem has not be studied. In this paper, we consider the measurement subset selection problem for globally self-optimizing control (gSOC) of Tennessee Eastman (TE) process. The TE process contains substantial measurements and had been studied for SOC with controlled variables selected from individual measurements through exhaustive search. This process has been revisited with improved performance recently through a retrofit approach of gSOC. To extend the improvement further, the measurement subset selection problem for gSOC is considered in this work and solved through a modification of an existing partially bidirectional branch and bound (PB3) algorithm originally developed for local SOC. The modified PB3 algorithm efficiently identifies the best measurement candidates among the full set which obtains the globally minimal economic loss. Dynamic simulations are conducted to demonstrate the optimality of proposed results

    Global self-optimizing control for uncertain constrained process systems

    Self-optimizing control is a promising control strategy to achieve real-time optimization (RTO) for uncertain process systems. Recently, a global self-optimizing control (gSOC) approach has been developed to extend the economic performance to be globally acceptable in the entire uncertain space spanned by disturbances and measurement noise. Nevertheless, the gSOC approach was derived based on the assumption of no change in active constraints, which limits the applicability of the approach. To address this deficiency, this paper proposes a new CV selection approach to handle active constraint changes. It ensures that all constraints are within their feasible regions when the selected CVs are maintained at constant setpoints for all expected uncertainties. In particular, constraints of interest are linearized at multiple operating conditions to get better estimates of their values and then incorporated into the optimization formulation when solving the globally self-optimizing CVs. The new CV selection approach is able to ensure an improved operational economic performance without potential constraint violations, as illustrated in an evaporator case study

    Retrofit self-optimizing control: a step forward towards real implementation

    After 15 year development, it is still hard to find any real application of the self-optimizing control (SOC) strategy, although it can achieve optimal or near optimal operation in industrial processes without repetitive realtime optimization. This is partially because of the misunderstanding that the SOC requires to completely reconfigure the entire control system which is generally unacceptable for most process plants in operation, even though the current one may not be optimal. To alleviate this situation, this paper proposes a retrofit SOC methodology aiming to improve the optimality of operation without change of existing control systems. In the new retrofitted SOC systems, the controlled variables (CVs) selected are kept at constant by adjusting setpoints of existing control loops, which therefore constitutes a two layer control architecture. CVs made from measurement combinations are determined to minimise the global average losses. A subset measurement selection problem for the global SOC is solved though a branch and bound algorithm. The standard testbed Tennessee Eastman (TE) process is studied with the proposed retrofit SOC methodology. The optimality of the new retrofit SOC architecture is validated by comparing two state of art control systems by Ricker and Larsson et al., through steady state analysis as well as dynamic simulations

    Bidirectional branch and bound for controlled variable selection. Part III: local average loss minimization

    The selection of controlled variables (CVs) from available measurements through exhaustive search is computationally forbidding for large-scale processes. We have recently proposed novel bidirectional branch and bound (B-3) approaches for CV selection using the minimum singular value (MSV) rule and the local worst- case loss criterion in the framework of self-optimizing control. However, the MSV rule is approximate and worst-case scenario may not occur frequently in practice. Thus, CV selection by minimizing local average loss can be deemed as most reliable. In this work, the B-3 approach is extended to CV selection based on local average loss metric. Lower bounds on local average loss and, fast pruning and branching algorithms are derived for the efficient B-3 algorithm. Random matrices and binary distillation column case study are used to demonstrate the computational efficiency of the proposed method

    Investigation of Some Self-Optimizing Control Problems for Net-Zero Energy Buildings

    Green buildings are sustainable buildings designed to be environmentally responsible and resource efficient. The Net-Zero Energy Building (NZEB) concept is anchored on two pillars: reducing the energy consumption and enhancing the local energy generation. In other words, efficient operation of the existing building equipment and efficient power generation of building integrated renewable energy sources are two important factors of NZEB development. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are an important class of building equipment that is responsible for large portion of building energy usage, while the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system is well received as the key technology for local generation of clean power. Building system operation is a low-investment practice that aims low operation and maintenance cost. However, building HVAC and BIPV are systems subject to complicated intrinsic processes and highly variable environmental conditions and occupant behavior. Control, optimization and monitoring of such systems desire simple and effective approaches that require the least amount of model information and the use of smallest number but most robust sensor measurements. Self-optimizing control strategies promise a competitive platform for control, optimization and control integrated monitoring for building systems, and especially for the development of cost-effective NZEB. This dissertation study endorses this statement with three aspects of work relevant to building HVAC and BIPV, which could contribute several small steps towards the ramification of the self-optimizing control paradigm. This dissertation study applies self-optimizing control techniques to improve the energy efficiency of NZEB from two aspects. First, regarding the building HVAC efficiency, the dither based extremum seeking control (DESC) scheme is proposed for energy efficient operation of the chilled-water system typically used in the commercial building ventilation and air conditioning (VAC) systems. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, Modelica based dynamic simulation model of chilled water chiller-tower plant is developed, which consists of a screw chiller and a mechanical-draft counter-flow wet cooling tower. The steady-state performance of the cooling tower model is validated with the experimental data in a classic paper and good agreement is observed. The DESC scheme takes the total power consumption of the chiller compressor and the tower fan as feedback, and uses the fan speed setting as the control input. The inner loop controllers for the chiller operation include two proportional-integral (PI) control loops for regulating the evaporator superheat and the chilled water temperature. Simulation was conducted on the whole dynamic simulation model with different environment conditions. The simulation results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed ESC strategy under abrupt changes of ambient conditions and load changes. The potential for energy savings of these cases are also evaluated. The back-calculation based anti-windup ESC is also simulated for handling the integral windup problem due to actuator saturation. Second, both maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and control integrated diagnostics are investigated for BIPV with two different extremum seeking control strategies, which both would contribute to the reduction of the cost of energy (COE). In particular, the Adaptive Extremum Seeking Control (AESC) is applied for PV MPPT, which is based on a PV model with known model structure but unknown nonlinear characteristics for the current-voltage relation. The nonlinear uncertainty is approximated by a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN). A Lyapunov based inverse optimal design technique is applied to achieve parameter estimation and gradient based extremum seeking. Simulation study is performed for scenarios of temperature change, irradiance change and combined change of temperature and irradiance. Successful results are observed for all cases. Furthermore, the AESC simulation is compared to the DESC simulation, and AESC demonstrates much faster transient responses under various scenarios of ambient changes. Many of the PV degradation mechanisms are reflected as the change of the internal resistance. A scheme of detecting the change of PV internal shunt resistance is proposed using the available signals in the DESC based MPPT with square-wave dither. The impact of the internal resistance on the transient characteristics of step responses is justified by using the small-signal transfer function analysis. Simulation study is performed for both the single-string and multi-string PV examples, and both cases have demonstrated successful results. Monotonic relationship between integral error indices and the shunt internal resistance is clearly observed. In particular, for the multi-string, the inter-channel coupling is weak, which indicates consistent monitoring for multi-string operation. The proposed scheme provides the online monitoring ability of the internal resistance condition without any additional sensor, which benefits further development of PV degradation detection techniques

    Self-Optimizing control for wind turbine generators

    The fast development of the wind power technology is leading to larger and more expensive wind turbines which require increasingly advance control systems to achieve optimal or near optimal operation. However, the increased optimality of complex operation schemes, like real-time optimization approaches, incur in high implementation and maintenance costs. Furthermore, while the wind speed is a key variable for the wind turbine control, using it as a direct input leads to a poor response of the power control. This makes the industry focus on simpler control structures, considering wind as a disturbance [1]. Nevertheless, baseline control laws, which perform a deterministic control, require that complex aerodynamic properties are wellknown to achieve the desired performance. But in practice, variability bounds the efficiency of the energy capture. Thus, a constrained self-optimizing control is proposed to regulate the wind turbine operation coping with wind speed uncertainty. A data-driven self-optimizing control is proposed for the wind turbine control region where power is maximized (region 2). Operational data is extracted from a model offline to examine the structure of the optimal solution. This insight is then transformed into a simple control structure capable of keeping the wind turbine to an optimal operation, in terms of maximizing power output. However, at high wind speed, wind turbine power output has to be maintained at its nominal rate. Thus, a cascade control structure for self-optimizing and constrained control is incorporated. The control structure is implemented in Simulink using as a model FAST v8 5MW onshore wind turbine model. The proposed self-optimizing control learns the structure of the optimal solution offline and then performs the optimization strategy, adjusting both torque and pitch to maximize energy capture. This control approach leads to an increase in power output when comparing it with the deterministic baseline control. Moreover, this heuristic control approach has the potential to take into account a higher number of inputs without compromising reliability. This property allows its future application for more advance control strategies
