    Self-Learning Prediciton System for Optimisation of Workload Managememt in a Mainframe Operating System

    We present a framework for extraction and prediction of online workload data from a workload manager of a mainframe operating system. To boost overall system performance, the prediction will be corporated into the workload manager to take preventive action before a bottleneck develops. Model and feature selection automatically create a prediction model based on given training data, thereby keeping the system flexible. We tailor data extraction, preprocessing and training to this specific task, keeping in mind the nonstationarity of business processes. Using error measures suited to our task, we show that our approach is promising. To conclude, we discuss our first results and give an outlook on future work

    In the summer of 1982, the ICLCUA CAFS Special Interest Group defined three subject areas for working party activity. These were: 1) interfaces with compilers and databases, 2) end-user language facilities and display methods, and 3) text-handling and office automation. The CAFS SIG convened one working party to address the first subject with the following terms of reference: 1) review facilities and map requirements onto them, 2) "Database or CAFS" or "Database on CAFS", 3) training needs for users to bridge to new techniques, and 4) repair specifications to cover gaps in software. The working party interpreted the topic broadly as the data processing professional's, rather than the end-user's, view of and relationship with CAFS. This report is the result of the working party's activities. The report content for good reasons exceeds the terms of reference in their strictest sense. For example, we examine QUERYMASTER, which is deemed to be an end-user tool by ICL, from both the DP and end-user perspectives. First, this is the only interface to CAFS in the current SV201. Secondly, it is necessary for the DP department to understand the end-user's interface to CAFS. Thirdly, the other subjects have not yet been addressed by other active working parties

    The initial premise of the research centred around the relatively new adoption by the Product Design sector of Computer Aided Design technology. Problems were expected to occur in applying the hardware and understanding the terminology of the software by this sector which prides itself In its artisan skills. The aim of the work was to determine the extent of the adoption of Computer Aided Design and to clarify the problem areas. The research determined, by study of more experienced but similar Computer Aided Design users, that the expected problems Were not insurmountable and were being overcome by the constant improvements of computer hardware and software. However, the problems that were pinpointed actually involved the human issues encountered In working with a Computer Aided Design system and involved issues such as the management skills required, working conditions and understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of Computer Aided Design. The research focused on what had to be considered and what should be known about Computer Aided Design so that it could be effectively used in Product Design. The research was undertaken to establish general solutions to the introduction of Computer Aided Design into companies. These solutions are intended to provide a guide to potential and current users on how to improve the effectiveness of the use of Computer Aided Design systems in Product Design. The research has identified the themes and topics that should be covered in training staff on the use and potential of Computer Aided Design systems

    The socio-technical factors in the use of GIS at the Planning Departments of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall

    The development of GIS has progressed dramatically in recent years and its use has proliferated in government planning departments in Malaysia. The majority of the information utilised for planning activities such as development control has a geographical component. The argument is that creating a successful GIS within planning organisation must be seen from a socio-technical rather than just a technical perspective. This paper presents an investigation on the use of GIS technology, specifically at the Department of Urban Planning (DUP) and the Master Plan Department (MPD) in the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (KLCH) Malaysia. The paper employed a combination of a case study, a semi-structured interview, and a survey questionnaire and observations of the activities of the department. The findings demonstrate that the skill, knowledge and training influence the planning staff to use GIS effectively. It is proved that the manner in which these factors interact with the GIS determines the processes which affect the utilisation process of automated systems. The paper concludes that a situation of mutual dependency whereby the socio-technical factors influence the utilisation of GIS and, at the same time, the technology has various impacts in terms of benefits and problems on the planning departments and staff involved.     Probabilistic grid scheduling based on job statistics and monitoring information

    This transfer thesis presents a novel, probabilistic approach to scheduling applications on computational Grids based on their historical behaviour, current state of the Grid and predictions of the future execution times and resource utilisation of such applications. The work lays a foundation for enabling a more intuitive, user-friendly and effective scheduling technique termed deadline scheduling. Initial work has established motivation and requirements for a more efficient Grid scheduler, able to adaptively handle dynamic nature of the Grid resources and submitted workload. Preliminary scheduler research identified the need for a detailed monitoring of Grid resources on the process level, and for a tool to simulate non-deterministic behaviour and statistical properties of Grid applications. A simulation tool, GridLoader, has been developed to enable modelling of application loads similar to a number of typical Grid applications. GridLoader is able to simulate CPU utilisation, memory allocation and network transfers according to limits set through command line parameters or a configuration file. Its specific strength is in achieving set resource utilisation targets in a probabilistic manner, thus creating a dynamic environment, suitable for testing the scheduler’s adaptability and its prediction algorithm. To enable highly granular monitoring of Grid applications, a monitoring framework based on the Ganglia Toolkit was developed and tested. The suite is able to collect resource usage information of individual Grid applications, integrate it into standard XML based information flow, provide visualisation through a Web portal, and export data into a format suitable for off-line analysis. The thesis also presents initial investigation of the utilisation of University College London Central Computing Cluster facility running Sun Grid Engine middleware. Feasibility of basic prediction concepts based on the historical information and process meta-data have been successfully established and possible scheduling improvements using such predictions identified. The thesis is structured as follows: Section 1 introduces Grid computing and its major concepts; Section 2 presents open research issues and specific focus of the author’s research; Section 3 gives a survey of the related literature, schedulers, monitoring tools and simulation packages; Section 4 presents the platform for author’s work – the Self-Organising Grid Resource management project; Sections 5 and 6 give detailed accounts of the monitoring framework and simulation tool developed; Section 7 presents the initial data analysis while Section 8.4 concludes the thesis with appendices and references

    Transaction-filtering data mining and a predictive model for intelligent data management

    This thesis, first of all, proposes a new data mining paradigm (transaction-filtering association rule mining) addressing a time consumption issue caused by the repeated scans of original transaction databases in conventional associate rule mining algorithms. An in-memory transaction filter is designed to discard those infrequent items in the pruning steps. This filter is a data structure to be updated at the end of each iteration. The results based on an IBM benchmark show that an execution time reduction of 10% - 19% is achieved compared with the base case. Next, a data mining-based predictive model is then established contributing to intelligent data management within the context of Centre for Grid Computing. The capability of discovering unseen rules, patterns and correlations enables data mining techniques favourable in areas where massive amounts of data are generated. The past behaviours of two typical scenarios (network file systems and Data Grids) have been analyzed to build the model. The future popularity of files can be forecasted with an accuracy of 90% by deploying the above predictor based on the given real system traces. A further step towards intelligent policy design is achieved by analyzing the prediction results of files’ future popularity. The real system trace-based simulations have shown improvements of 2-4 times in terms of data response time in network file system scenario and 24% mean job time reduction in Data Grids compared with conventional cases.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
