    Outsourcing selective maintenance problem in failure prone multi-component systems

    In many industrial settings, there are systems designed to perform consecutive missions interspersed with finite breaks during which only a set of component repairs can be carried out due to limited time, budget, or resources. The decision maker then has to decide which components to repair in order to guarantee a given performance level. This is known as the selective maintenance problem (SMP). This paper introduces a new variant of the SMP by specifically taking into account the maintenance outsourcing alternative. A novel integrated non-linear programming formulation where both the in-house and outsourcing maintenance alternatives are accounted for is developed and optimally solved. The effect of the outsourcing alternative on maintenance decisions is investigated through numerical experiments. The overall results obtained demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach.     A review on maintenance optimization

    To this day, continuous developments of technical systems and increasing reliance on equipment have resulted in a growing importance of effective maintenance activities. During the last couple of decades, a substantial amount of research has been carried out on this topic. In this study we review more than two hundred papers on maintenance modeling and optimization that have appeared in the period 2001 to 2018. We begin by describing terms commonly used in the modeling process. Then, in our classification, we first distinguish single-unit and multi-unit systems. Further sub-classification follows, based on the state space of the deterioration process modeled. Other features that we discuss in this review are discrete and continuous condition monitoring, inspection, replacement, repair, and the various types of dependencies that may exist between units within systems. We end with the main developments during the review period and with potential future research directions

    A feature-based comparison of the centralised versus market-based decision making under lens of environment uncertainty : case of the mobile task allocation problem

    Decision making problems are amongst the most common challenges facing managers at different management levels in the organisation: strategic, tactical, and operational. However, prior reaching decisions at the operational level of the management hierarchy, operations management departments frequently have to deal with the optimisation process to evaluate the available decision alternatives. Industries with complex supply chain structures and service organisations that have to optimise the utilisation of their resources are examples. Conventionally, operational decisions used to be taken centrally by a decision making authority located at the top of a hierarchically-structured organisation. In order to take decisions, information related to the managed system and the affecting externalities (e.g. demand) should be globally available to the decision maker. The obtained information is then processed to reach the optimal decision. This approach usually makes extensive use of information systems (IS) containing myriad of optimisation algorithms and meta-heuristics to process the high amount and complex nature of data. The decisions reached are then broadcasted to the passive actuators of the system to put them in execution. On the other hand, recent advancements in information and communication technologies (ICT) made it possible to distribute the decision making rights and proved its applicability in several sectors. The market-based approach is as such a distributed decision making mechanism where passive actuators are delegated the rights of taking individual decisions matching their self-interests. The communication among the market agents is done through market transactions regulated by auctions. The system’s global optimisation, therefore, raise from the aggregated self-oriented market agents. As opposed to the centralised approach, the main characteristics of the market-based approach are the market mechanism and local knowledge of the agents. The existence of both approaches attracted several studies to compare them in different contexts. Recently, some comparisons compared the centralised versus market-based approaches in the context of transportation applications from an algorithm perspective. Transportation applications and routing problems are assumed to be good candidates for this comparison given the distributed nature of the system and due to the presence of several sources of uncertainty. Uncertainty exceptions make decisions highly vulnerable and necessitating frequent corrective interventions to keep an efficient level of service. Motivated by the previous comparison studies, this research aims at further investigating the features of both approaches and to contrast them in the context of a distributed task allocation problem in light of environmental uncertainty. Similar applications are often faced by service industries with mobile workforce. Contrary to the previous comparison studies that sought to compare those approaches at the mechanism level, this research attempts to identify the effect of the most significant characteristics of each approach to face environmental uncertainty, which is reflected in this research by the arrival of dynamic tasks and the occurrence of stochasticity delays. To achieve the aim of this research, a target optimisation problem from the VRP family is proposed and solved with both approaches. Given that this research does not target proposing new algorithms, two basic solution mechanisms are adopted to compare the centralised and the market-based approach. The produced solutions are executed on a dedicated multi-agent simulation system. During execution dynamism and stochasticity are introduced. The research findings suggest that a market-based approach is attractive to implement in highly uncertain environments when the degree of local knowledge and workers’ experience is high and when the system tends to be complex with large dimensions. It is also suggested that a centralised approach fits more in situations where uncertainty is lower and the decision maker is able to make timely decision updates, which is in turn regulated by the size of the system at hand.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    A Message Transfer Framework for Enhanced Reliability in Delay-and Disruption-Tolerant Networks

    Many infrastructure-less networks require quick, ad hoc deployment and the ability to deliver messages even if no instantaneous end-to-end path can be found. Such networks include large-scale disaster recovery networks, mobile sensor networks for ecological monitoring, ocean sensor networks, people networks, vehicular networks and projects for connectivity in developing regions such as TIER (Technology and Infrastructure for Emerging Regions). These types of networks can be realized with delay-and disruption-tolerant network (DTN) technology. Generally, messages in DTNs are transferred hop-by-hop toward the destination in an overlay above the transport layer called the ''bundle layer''. Unlike mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), DTNs can tolerate disruption on end-to-end paths by taking advantage of temporal links emerging between nodes as nodes move in the network. Intermediate nodes store messages before forwarding opportunities become available. A series of encounters (i.e., coming within mutual transmission range) among different nodes will eventually deliver the message to the desired destination. The message delivery performance (such as delivery ratio and delay) in a DTN highly depends on time elapsed between encounters (inter-contact time) and the time two nodes remain in each others communication range once a contact is established (contact-duration). As messages are forwarded opportunistically among nodes, it is important to have sufficient contact opportunities in the network for faster, more reliable delivery of messages. In this thesis, we propose a simple yet efficient method for increasing DTN performance by increasing the contact duration of encountered nodes (i.e., mobile devices). Our proposed sticky transfer framework and protocol enable nodes in DTNs to collect neighbors' information, evaluate their movement patterns and amounts of data to transfer in order to make decisions of whether to ''stick'' with a neighbor to complete the necessary data transfers. Nodes intelligently negotiate sticky transfer parameters such as stick duration, mobility speed and movement directions based on user preferences and collected information. The sticky transfer framework can be combined with any DTN routing protocol to improve its performance. Our simulation results show that the proposed framework can improve the message delivery ratio by up to 38% and the end-to-end message transfer delay by up to 36%

    Development of a Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) model for break scheduling management in human-intensive working activities

    2016 - 2017Human factors play an inevitable role in working contexts and the occurrence of human errors impacts on system reliability and safety, equipment performance and economic results. If human fallibility contributes to majority of incidents and accidents in high-risk systems, it mainly affects the quality and productivity in low-risk systems. Due to the prevalence of human error and the huge and often costly consequences, a considerable effort has been made in the field of Human Reliability Analysis (HRA), thus arriving to develop methods with the common purpose to predict the human error probability (HEP) and to enable safer and more productive designs. The purpose of each HRA method should be the HEP quantification to reduce and prevent possible conditions of error in a working context. However, existing HRA methods do not always pursue this aim in an efficient way, focusing on the qualitative error evaluation and on high-risk contexts. Moreover, several working aspects have been considered to prevent accidents and improve human performance in human-intensive working contexts, as for example the selection of adequate work-rest policies. It is well-known that introducing breaks is a key intervention to provide recovery after fatiguing physical work, prevent the growth of accident risks, and improve human reliability and productivity for individuals engaged in either mental or physical tasks.
