    Synchronic Analysis of Adversarial Attacks in Syria Committed by the Islamic State

    Militarized technologies, large support infrastructures, and the unintended consequences of increased violence demonstrate that the current strategies are unsustainable to end modern conflict. However, the potential exists to precisely identify patterns from empirically reduced adversarial behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental synchronic retrospective analysis was to determine the relationship between the distance, fatalities, and time (independent variables) to the hazard force (dependent variable) executed by ISIS in Syria between the years 2007 to 2015. A data set containing 12,326 records for attacks committed by U.S. adversaries in 20 countries between the years of 2007-2015 was analyzed using multiple linear regression. The theoretical foundation for this study was based on symmetrical and asymmetrical applied gaming theory, which differentiates between adversarial sizes and strategies. According to this theory, the potential direction between two attacks occurs because (a) adversaries operate with rationality, and (b) between any two targets (A and B); the rational preference is determined when the ratio of value of B over A is greater than A over B. This rational preference was calculated as intensity and was called hazard force. The analysis demonstrated a statistically significant association between fatalities and distance. The potential for positive social change as a result of this study may be through modeling adversarial events more accurately, reducing human costs, and redirecting finite resources to greater human endeavors, or creating policies with greater efficacy

    Exploring the intellectual capital and financial capital interface: an artefact-based criteria approach to the recognition of ‘organisational’ assets

Purpose: The paper presents asset recognition criteria based on the idea that an asset should be functional, separable and measurable and that financial recognition should be triggered by the recognition of an artefact. We apply these criteria to four organisational assets, that is, those intangible assets that are unlikely to be reported in the accounting domain. Findings: We do so in order to show how one may expand the basis on which assets can be reported financially to elements of intellectual capital as well as financial capital. Grouping the findings into the categories of consumers, technologies, and suppliers, the article sheds light on the evolution of IT applications in the tourism and hospitality industries. The article demonstrates that IT is increasingly becoming critical for the competitive operations of the tourism and hospitality organizations as well as for managing the distribution and marketing of organizations on a global scale

    A Systemic Approach to Next Generation Infrastructure Data Elicitation and Planning Using Serious Gaming Methods

    Infrastructure systems are vital to the functioning of our society and economy. However, these systems are increasingly complex and are more interdependent than ever, making them difficult to manage. In order to respond to increasing demand, environmental concerns, and natural and man-made threats, infrastructure systems have to adapt and transform. Traditional engineering design approaches and planning tools have proven to be inadequate when planning and managing these complex socio-technical system transitions. The design and implementation of next generation infrastructure systems require holistic methodologies, encompassing organizational and societal aspects in addition to technical factors. In order to do so, a serious gaming based risk assessment methodology is developed to assist infrastructure data elicitation and planning. The methodology combines the use of various models, commercial-off-the-shelf solutions and a gaming approach to aggregate the inputs of various subject matter experts (SMEs) to predict future system characteristics. The serious gaming based approach enables experts to obtain a thorough understanding of the complexity and interdependency of the system while offering a platform to experiment with various strategies and scenarios. In order to demonstrate its abilities, the methodology was applied to National Airspace System (NAS) overhaul and its transformation to Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). The implemented methodology yielded a comprehensive safety assessment and data generation mechanism, embracing the social and technical aspects of the NAS transformation for the next 15 years

    Criticality of infrastructure networks under consideration of resilience-based maintenance strategies using the example of inland waterways

    Transportation infrastructures as backbone of modern, globalized, and networked societies ensure flows of people and goods and thus sustain social and economic prosperity. Concurrently, more and more infrastructure construction assets are facing the problem of systematic obsolescence due to deficient structural conditions, maintenance backlogs, and a lack of or misallocation of resources for the construction and maintenance of infrastructure buildings. This problem construct necessitates a resilience-based maintenance strategy for the asset portfolio. In particular, inland navigation as a mode of transport features large transport volumes and few redundancies. Combined with its increasing importance due to its comparatively high environmental friendliness, a predestined, yet in the literature underrepresented research subject results. This dissertation aims to investigate essential factors of infrastructure management and thereby identify the potential for improvement in the complex construct of maintenance management and related areas. The emphasis is on enhancing the resilience of inland waterways as a complex System-of-Systems with all its interdependencies. Thus, a holistic risk and resilience assessment is essential and is underlined with the aspects infrastructure availability and business decisions (Study A, B, C and D) and stakeholder communication and risk analysis (Study E, F, G) which are addressed by seven studies published as companion articles. Study A deals with assessing the reliability of transport infrastructure networks as part of supply chains, highlighting the importance of available and thus maintained infrastructure assets for functioning supply chains. Study B aims to identify critical warning times before closures of transport infrastructure networks and therefore suggests a mixed-methods approach, making it possible to derive and evaluate critical thresholds. Study C examines the corresponding company decisions, i.e., decisions as reaction towards neglected maintenance of public transport infrastructure, which comprises risk coping strategies, examined by empirical investigations. Study D extends this problem observation by showing that companies could see incentives for outsourcing if they face a lack of access to available transport infrastructure. Hence, the study analyzes facility relocation problems in dependence on infrastructure availability. Study E heads toward stakeholder communication and risk analysis and examines the processes across stakeholders, using an approach of collaborative serious gaming, which simultaneously enhances situation awareness and communication among stakeholders. Study F provides the implementation of a systemic approach and its visualization as a GIS-based risk dashboard, shedding light on interdependencies among critical infrastructures and cascading effects. Study G closes with an examination of the evaluation of the potential of infrastructure funds. For this purpose, the study conducts an online survey to determine investors’ willingness to pay for various fund mechanisms, integrating the option of private coverage. Despite the geographic focus of the case studies on Germany, valuable insights can be gained for infrastructure management that can also apply to other countries. In addition to the case study findings, general recommendations for infrastructure owners are derived. As a result, it can be stated that it is essential that maintenance strategies have to be more resilience-based than traditional strategies, which are mainly based on fixed time intervals for maintenance. Moreover, the application of both serious gaming and GIS visualization can help to enhance situation awareness and thus the resilience of infrastructure systems. An essential finding for which this dissertation provides methodological approaches is that considering the local area’s attractiveness for business locations should receive more attention regarding investment decisions. Thereby a focus should be set on the realistic threat of relocations as response to deteriorating infrastructure conditions. Eventually, public debates should strengthen the knowledge about infrastructure and its funding, while deficits in alongside mechanisms in infrastructure funding must be encountered. Consequently, this dissertation provides insights into the potential of infrastructure management. Mainly, it offers the potential to improve the resilience of the waterway transportation system and address stakeholders accordingly

    Scales representing ambient conditions, ability to navigate the slot floor, cleanliness, interior decor and seating comfort all produce a significant effect on slot servicescape satisfaction. Scales representing slot servicescape satisfaction and gaming value produce significant effects on overall satisfaction with the slot experience. Overall satisfaction with the slot experience produces a significant effect on behavioral intention variables such as repatronage, word of mouth and desire to remain in the casino environment. This exploratory study uses data from a Las Vegas hotel casino to extend the work of Bitner (1992) and Wakefield and Blodgett (1996) related to servicescape effects. Simultaneous multiple regression analysis was used to test all one-tailed hypotheses at the .1 0 alpha level (n = 195)

    Using ESG disclosure score as an investment tool – evidence from Finnish stock market

    The concept of socially responsible investing has increased rapidly over the past two decades as the investors are demanding such practices and the company’s ecological, social and governance issues are capturing more media coverage. The purpose of this thesis is to study the effect of company’s ESG disclosure score on its performance. ESG disclosure score measures the amount of information disclosed by company on ecological, social and governance issues. Thesis is conducted using a data of daily stock returns from Finnish stock exchange between the years 2006 and 2016. Companies from Helsinki stock exchange are divided into two equally- weighted portfolios using ESG disclosure score provided by Bloomberg as a divider. ESG portfolio includes companies that disclose some of the ESG information while non-ESG portfolio includes company with no ESG disclosure score. The portfolios are rebalanced after each year based on the changes in ESG disclosure score. Results suggest that the usage of company’s ESG disclosure score as an investment screen does not lead to a significant over or underperformance. Furthermore, neither of the sample portfolios are able to create positive alphas during the sample period. Difference between the performances of the two portfolios are explained through exposure to market risk. The performance of the sample portfolios is also tested against different market conditions by dividing the sample period into crisis and non-crisis periods. Evidence from the thesis indicates that ESG portfolio generates positive alphas during the non-crisis period and negative alphas during market turmoil while the opposite is true for the non-ESG portfolio. While the portfolios are able to generate positive alphas during market turmoil while the opposite is true for the non-ESG portfolio.
