Applying semantic web technologies to knowledge sharing in aerospace engineering
This paper details an integrated methodology to optimise Knowledge reuse and sharing, illustrated with a use case in the aeronautics domain. It uses Ontologies as a central modelling strategy for the Capture of Knowledge from legacy docu-ments via automated means, or directly in systems interfacing with Knowledge workers, via user-defined, web-based forms. The domain ontologies used for Knowledge Capture also guide the retrieval of the Knowledge extracted from the data using a Semantic Search System that provides support for multiple modalities during search. This approach has been applied and evaluated successfully within the aerospace domain, and is currently being extended for use in other domains on an increasingly large scale
TEXTUAL DATA MINING FOR NEXT GENERATION INTELLIGENT DECISION MAKING IN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT: A SURVEY
This paper proposes textual data mining as a next generation intelligent decision making technology for sustainable knowledge management solutions in any industrial environment. A detailed survey of applications of Data Mining techniques for exploiting information from different data formats and transforming this information into knowledge is presented in the literature survey. The focus of the survey is to show the power of different data mining techniques for exploiting information from data. The literature surveyed in this paper shows that intelligent decision making is of great importance in many contexts within manufacturing, construction and business generally. Business intelligence tools, which can be interpreted as decision support tools, are of increasing importance to companies for their success within competitive global markets. However, these tools are dependent on the relevancy, accuracy and overall quality of the knowledge on which they are based and which they use. Thus the research work presented in the paper uncover the importance and power of different data mining techniques supported by text mining methods used to exploit information from semi-structured or un-structured data formats. A great source of information is available in these formats and when exploited by combined efforts of data and text mining tools help the decision maker to take effective decision for the enhancement of business of industry and discovery of useful knowledge is made for next generation of intelligent decision making. Thus the survey shows the power of textual data mining as the next generation technology for intelligent decision making in the industrial environment
A Web Smart Space Framework for Intelligent Search Engines
A web smart space is an intelligent environment which has additional capability of searching the information smartly and efficiently. New advancements like dynamic web contents generation has increased the size of web repositories. Among so many modern software analysis requirements, one is to search information from the given repository. But useful information extraction is a troublesome hitch due to the multi-lingual; base of the web data collection. The issue of semantic based information searching has become a standoff due to the inconsistencies and variations in the characteristics of the data. In the accomplished research, a web smart space framework has been proposed which introduces front end processing for a search engine to make the information retrieval process more intelligent and accurate. In orthodox searching anatomies, searching is performed only by using pattern matching technique and consequently a large number of irrelevant results are generated. The projected framework has insightful ability to improve this drawback and returns efficient outcomes. Designed framework gets text input from the user in the form complete question, understands the input and generates the meanings. Search engine searches on the basis of the information provided
Shape-based defect classification for Non Destructive Testing
The aim of this work is to classify the aerospace structure defects detected
by eddy current non-destructive testing. The proposed method is based on the
assumption that the defect is bound to the reaction of the probe coil impedance
during the test. Impedance plane analysis is used to extract a feature vector
from the shape of the coil impedance in the complex plane, through the use of
some geometric parameters. Shape recognition is tested with three different
machine-learning based classifiers: decision trees, neural networks and Naive
Bayes. The performance of the proposed detection system are measured in terms
of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision and Matthews correlation
coefficient. Several experiments are performed on dataset of eddy current
signal samples for aircraft structures. The obtained results demonstrate the
usefulness of our approach and the competiveness against existing descriptors.Comment: 5 pages, IEEE International Worksho
Technological troubleshooting based on sentence embedding with deep transformers
AbstractIn nowadays manufacturing, each technical assistance operation is digitally tracked. This results in a huge amount of textual data that can be exploited as a knowledge base to improve these operations. For instance, an ongoing problem can be addressed by retrieving potential solutions among the ones used to cope with similar problems during past operations. To be effective, most of the approaches for semantic textual similarity need to be supported by a structured semantic context (e.g. industry-specific ontology), resulting in high development and management costs. We overcome this limitation with a textual similarity approach featuring three functional modules. The data preparation module provides punctuation and stop-words removal, and word lemmatization. The pre-processed sentences undergo the sentence embedding module, based on Sentence-BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) and aimed at transforming the sentences into fixed-length vectors. Their cosine similarity is processed by the scoring module to match the expected similarity between the two original sentences. Finally, this similarity measure is employed to retrieve the most suitable recorded solutions for the ongoing problem. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is tested (i) against a state-of-the-art competitor and two well-known textual similarity approaches, and (ii) with two case studies, i.e. private company technical assistance reports and a benchmark dataset for semantic textual similarity. With respect to the state-of-the-art, the proposed approach results in comparable retrieval performance and significantly lower management cost: 30-min questionnaires are sufficient to obtain the semantic context knowledge to be injected into our textual search engine
Mapping Big Data into Knowledge Space with Cognitive Cyber-Infrastructure
Big data research has attracted great attention in science, technology,
industry and society. It is developing with the evolving scientific paradigm,
the fourth industrial revolution, and the transformational innovation of
technologies. However, its nature and fundamental challenge have not been
recognized, and its own methodology has not been formed. This paper explores
and answers the following questions: What is big data? What are the basic
methods for representing, managing and analyzing big data? What is the
relationship between big data and knowledge? Can we find a mapping from big
data into knowledge space? What kind of infrastructure is required to support
not only big data management and analysis but also knowledge discovery, sharing
and management? What is the relationship between big data and science paradigm?
What is the nature and fundamental challenge of big data computing? A
multi-dimensional perspective is presented toward a methodology of big data
computing.Comment: 59 page
CBR and MBR techniques: review for an application in the emergencies domain
The purpose of this document is to provide an in-depth analysis of current reasoning engine practice and the integration strategies of Case Based Reasoning and Model Based Reasoning that will be used in the design and development of the RIMSAT system.
RIMSAT (Remote Intelligent Management Support and Training) is a European Commission funded project designed to:
a.. Provide an innovative, 'intelligent', knowledge based solution aimed at improving the quality of critical decisions
b.. Enhance the competencies and responsiveness of individuals and organisations involved in highly complex, safety critical incidents - irrespective of their location.
In other words, RIMSAT aims to design and implement a decision support system that using Case Base Reasoning as well as Model Base Reasoning technology is applied in the management of emergency situations.
This document is part of a deliverable for RIMSAT project, and although it has been done in close contact with the requirements of the project, it provides an overview wide enough for providing a state of the art in integration strategies between CBR and MBR technologies.Postprint (published version
