Security-as-a-Service in Multi-cloud and Federated Cloud Environments

    Get PDF
The economic benefits of cloud computing are encouraging customers to bring complex applications and data into the cloud. However security remains the biggest barrier in the adoption of cloud, and with the advent of multi-cloud and federated clouds in practice security concerns are for applications and data in the cloud. This paper proposes security as a value added service, provisioned dynamically during deployment and operation management of an application in multi-cloud and federated clouds. This paper specifically considers a data protection and a host & application protection solution that are offered as a SaaS application, to validate the security services in a multi-cloud and federated cloud environment. This paper shares our experiences of validating these security services over a geographically distributed, large scale, multi-cloud and federated cloud infrastructure

Cloud-assisted body area networks: state-of-the-art and future challenges

Body area networks (BANs) are emerging as enabling technology for many human-centered application domains such as health-care, sport, fitness, wellness, ergonomics, emergency, safety, security, and sociality. A BAN, which basically consists of wireless wearable sensor nodes usually coordinated by a static or mobile device, is mainly exploited to monitor single assisted livings. Data generated by a BAN can be processed in real-time by the BAN coordinator and/or transmitted to a server-side for online/offline processing and long-term storing. A network of BANs worn by a community of people produces large amount of contextual data that require a scalable and efficient approach for elaboration and storage. Cloud computing can provide a flexible storage and processing infrastructure to perform both online and offline analysis of body sensor data streams. In this paper, we motivate the introduction of Cloud-assisted BANs along with the main challenges that need to be addressed for their development and management. The current state-of-the-art is overviewed and framed according to the main requirements for effective Cloud-assisted BAN architectures. Finally, relevant open research issues in terms of efficiency, scalability, security, interoperability, prototyping, dynamic deployment and management, are discussed

The Benefits of Enterprise Data Warehouse Implementation in Cloud vs. On-premises

When we think about running enterprise applications on-premises, enterprises do two things for their servers, databases, and storage. Enterprises provision for peaks and put a lot of infrastructures to handle peak demand, although a lot of this capacity is not used at normal times. The other thing is a few instances that each application needs to have, typically between five and six. Multiplying this number by many times due to various applications causes a lot of costs and creates capacity that is not used. For such reasons, the enterprise applications in the cloud seem reasonable. In the cloud, two things are possible again. Instead of overprovisioning for peaks, enterprises can scale the capacity on on-demand and spin up instances on demand. This means a certain amount of cost-saving by running at a normal level instead of overprovisioning. In this paper, various factors will be considered, and the benefits for enterprise data warehouse implementation in the cloud vs. on-premises will be stated

    SMART-ITEM: IoT-Enabled Smart Living

    Get PDF
The main goal of this proposed project is to harness the emerging IoT technology to empower elderly population to self-manage their own health, stay active, healthy, and independent as long as possible within a smart and secured living environment. An integrated open-sourced IoT ecosystem will be developed. It will encompass the entire data lifecycle which involves the following processes: data acquisition, data transportation; data integration, processing, manipulation and computation; visualisation; data intelligence and exploitation; data sharing; data storage. This innovative cloud-based IoT ecosystem will provide a one-stop shop for integrated smart IoT-enabled services to support older people (greater or equal to 65 years old) who live alone at home (or care homes). Another innovation of this system is the design and implementation of an integrated IoT gateway for wellbeing wearable and home automation system sensors with varying communication protocols. The SMART-ITEM system and services will appropriately address the following (i) smart health and care; (ii) smart quality of life; (iii) SMART-ITEM social community. The development of the system will be based on the User Centred Design methodology so as to ensure active user engagement throughout the entire project lifecycle and necessary standards as well as compliances will be adhered to (e.g. security, trust and privacy) in order to enhance user acceptance

IoT for Efficient Data Collection from Real World Resources

    Get PDF
The Internet of Things is providing new ways of experiencing and reacting to the physical world through the ability of advanced electronic devices that collect data. At the same time, as new application scenarios are envisioned, with the assistance of information generated by sensors, new problems and obstacles will arise. This requires new development to meet business and technical requirements, such as interoperability between heterogeneous devices and confidence (such as validity, security and trust) over smart devices. With the increase of these complex requirements it becomes crucial to develop an infrastructure aimed at tackling such requirements mentioned. IoT middleware – a software layer that bridges the gap between devices and information systems. Thus, this work aims to study the mechanisms and methodology for data collection, devices interoperability and data filtering, closer to the data sources, in order to optimize the collection and pre-analysis of data that can then be used by various applications such as the ones in manufacturing industry

Smart Grid Communications: Overview of Research Challenges, Solutions, and Standardization Activities

Optimization of energy consumption in future intelligent energy networks (or Smart Grids) will be based on grid-integrated near-real-time communications between various grid elements in generation, transmission, distribution and loads. This paper discusses some of the challenges and opportunities of communications research in the areas of smart grid and smart metering. In particular, we focus on some of the key communications challenges for realizing interoperable and future-proof smart grid/metering networks, smart grid security and privacy, and how some of the existing networking technologies can be applied to energy management. Finally, we also discuss the coordinated standardization efforts in Europe to harmonize communications standards and protocols.Comment: To be published in IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorial

    The Boost 4.0 Experience

    Get PDF
In the last few years, the potential impact of big data on the manufacturing industry has received enormous attention. This chapter details two large-scale trials that have been implemented in the context of the lighthouse project Boost 4.0. The chapter introduces the Boost 4.0 Reference Model, which adapts the more generic BDVA big data reference architectures to the needs of Industry 4.0. The Boost 4.0 reference model includes a reference architecture for the design and implementation of advanced big data pipelines and the digital factory service development reference architecture. The engineering and management of business network track and trace processes in high-end textile supply are explored with a focus on the assurance of Preferential Certification of Origin (PCO). Finally, the main findings from these two large-scale piloting activities in the area of service engineering are discussed.publishersversionpublishe
