SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND GLOBALIZATION: A RE-APPRAISAL IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Every age has got its age-mark; the outstanding feature characteristic that defines that age. Our age, the 21st century, like the one before it, is defined by globalization. Historical philosophers or dialecticians, those who perceive an underlying logic in history, believe that no phase of life comes to a close until it has exhausted all its possibilities. It is obvious that globalization has not exhausted its possibilities. Globalization is still in progress. It is still the defining mark of our age. There is therefore the need to re-appraise it to raise fundamental philosophical questions about it; such questions as relate to the phenomenology of globalization; the philosophical foundations of globalization; the symbiotic and synergistic relationship between science and technology as the force driving globalization; and the cost-benefit analysis of globalization. It is only when these questions are philosophically re-appraised that we would hope to effectively function and contribute in our globalized world, a competitive, participators and interactive world. Since the Kernel of this paper is about re-appraising the symbiotic and synergistic relationship between science and technology as the motor driving globalization, our approach is that of the philosophy of science and technology

Ethical responsibility in communication involves principles such as honesty, integrity, respect, and empathy. Scientific communication skills assist in effectively conveying messages, while mastering information technology plays a vital role in meeting information needs amidst global competition and social changes. The Contribution of African Philosophy in Challenging Western Hegemony and Globalization

Abstract The purpose of this article is to explore the contribution of African philosophy in challenging the impacts of Western hegemony and globalization on Africa. Since Western philosophy claims the “universality” of its philosophy, culture, science and technology, some racist Western philosophers pledge to provide this to Africa as part of their “civilizing mission” because they argue that Africa has no civilization. Nowadays, this notion, supported by globalization, assumes a hegemonic place in Africa. The article examines the impacts of globalization which has increased the cultural, political and economic problems of the continent which require the contribution of African philosophy to be resolved. In so doing,a qualitative method is used by analyzing relevant secondary sources collected from books, book sections, and journal articles. The article argued that African philosophy as such uses critical analysis, synthesis, and criticism to resolve problems facing the people of the continent. So, the African philosophical approach should be used to sort out and do away with African problems. Mostimportantly,recognizing and inculcating the contributions of African traditional values and thoughts that can go hand in hand with the achievements of globalization is vital, for Western science and technology alone are so local, and not enough for the betterment of Africa. Based on this, the article suggested that both the West and Africa should take part in cross-cultural communications so as to create understanding about the pluralistic nature of cultures and the significance of African traditional values and thoughts. This, in turn, empowers African philosophers, the people,governments, and concerned bodies to work on Africanization via rediscovering African identity

Innovation in India and China : Challenges and Prospects in Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology

India and China are important players in an evolving process of globalization of research and development (R&D). Focusing on pharmaceuticals and biotechnology industries, this paper analyses the challenges and prospects facing the two countries in global innovation. Large supplies of highly skilled professionals and well-established science and technology infrastructures are important assets for India and China in the era of globalization of R&D. At the same time, however, there is a concern that as globalization of R&D gathers steam, the poor in India, China and other developing countries are likely to be left out of the new innovations. A good example is the case of Indias pharmaceuticals industry. The leading Indian pharmaceutical firms have responded well to the challenge of a strict intellectual property rights (IPR) regime by increasing their R&D spending and, simultaneously, targeting their sales to the generic drugs markets in North America and Europe. TECHNICAL BACKGROUND OF GLOBALIZATION

The technological development is a kind of constraint and considering this fact is vital in terms of the globalization processes studied. In the past fifty years close relations have been developed between science and technology. The other driving force is the change of the relation between consumers and the industry. The accelerating technical development of the last fifty years did not refer to national boundaries. Technology, along with the scientific development that preceded it, will not remain within the national borders, but it will disseminate and will take along the cultural background needed for its usage. Economic and political globalization is based on this process. Technology-based globalization, in its wider sense, will take place anyway. Its extent and nature depend on the economic and political methods and efforts. Fighting against technical globalization is like tilting at windmills, through which you lose the chance to ensure an appropriate place for yourself in the globalizing world
