    Securing Peer-to-Peer Overlay Networks

    Overlay networks are virtual networks, which exist on top of the current Inter net architecture, and are used in support of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications. The virtualization provides overlays with the ability to create large, scalable, decentral ized networks with efficient routing. Many implementations of overlay networks have come out of academic research. Each provides a unique structure and routing configuration, aimed at increasing the overall network efficiency for a particular ap plication. However, they are all threatened by a similar set of severe vulnerabilities. I explore some of these security deficiencies of overlay network designs and pro pose a new overlay network security framework Phyllo. This framework aims to mitigate all of the targeted security problems across a majority of the current overlay implementations, while only requiring minimal design changes. In order to demonstrate the validity of Phyllo, it was implemented on top of the Pastry overlay architecture. The performance and security metrics of the network with the pro posed framework are evaluated against those of the original in order to demonstrate the feasibility of Phyllo

    Peer-to-peer (p2p) networks have gained immense popularity in recent years and the number of services they provide continuously rises. Where p2p-networks were formerly known as file-sharing networks, p2p is now also used for services like VoIP and IPTV. With so many different p2p applications and services the need for a taxonomy framework rises. This paper describes the available p2p applications grouped by the services they provide. A taxonomy framework is proposed to classify old and recent p2p applications based on their characteristics

    Exploiting the Synergy Between Gossiping and Structured Overlays

    In this position paper we argue for exploiting the synergy between gossip-based algorithms and structured overlay networks (SON). These two strands of research have both aimed at building fault-tolerant, dynamic, self-managing, and large-scale distributed systems. Despite the common goals, the two areas have, however, been relatively isolated. We focus on three problem domains where there is an untapped potential of using gossiping combined with SONs. We argue for applying gossip-based membership for ring-based SONs---such as Chord and Bamboo---to make them handle partition mergers and loopy networks. We argue that small world SONs---such as Accordion and Mercury---are specifically well-suited for gossip-based membership management. The benefits would be better graph-theoretic properties. Finally, we argue that gossip-based algorithms could use the overlay constructed by SONs. For example, many unreliable broadcast algorithms for SONs could be augmented with anti-entropy protocols. Similarly, gossip-based aggregation could be used in SONs for network size estimation and load-balancing purposes

    Mobile object location discovery in unpredictable environments

    Emerging mobile and ubiquitous computing environments present hard challenges to software engineering. The use of mobile code has been suggested as a natural fit for simplifing software development for these environments. However, the task of discovering mobile code location becomes a problem in unpredictable environments when using existing strategies, designed with fixed and relatively stable networks in mind. This paper introduces AMOS, a mobile code platform augmented with a structured overlay network. We demonstrate how the location discovery strategy of AMOS has better reliability and scalability properties than existing approaches, with minimal communication overhead. Finally, we demonstrate how AMOS can provide autonomous distribution of effort fairly throughout a network using probabilistic methods that requires no global knowledge of host capabilities

    Multicast in DKS(N, k, f) Overlay Networks

    Recent developments in the area of peer-to-peer computing show that structured overlay networks implementing distributed hash tables scale well and can serve as infrastructures for Internet scale applications. We are developing a family of infrastructures, DKS(N; k; f), for the construction of peer-to-peer applications. An instance of DKS(N; k; f) is an overlay network that implements a distributed hash table and which has a number of desirable properties: low cost of communication, scalability, logarithmic lookup length, fault-tolerance and strong guarantees of locating any data item that was inserted in the system. In this paper, we show how multicast is achieved in DKS(N, k, f) overlay networks. The design presented here is attractive in three main respects. First, members of a multicast group self-organize in an instance of DKS(N, k, f) in a way that allows co-existence of groups of different sizes, degree of fault-tolerance, and maintenance cost, thereby, providing flexibility. Second, each member of a group can multicast, rather than having single source multicast. Third, within a group, dissemination of a multicast message is optimal under normal system operation in the sense that there are no redundant messages despite the presence of outdated routing information
