Big Data and the Internet of Things
Advances in sensing and computing capabilities are making it possible to
embed increasing computing power in small devices. This has enabled the sensing
devices not just to passively capture data at very high resolution but also to
take sophisticated actions in response. Combined with advances in
communication, this is resulting in an ecosystem of highly interconnected
devices referred to as the Internet of Things - IoT. In conjunction, the
advances in machine learning have allowed building models on this ever
increasing amounts of data. Consequently, devices all the way from heavy assets
such as aircraft engines to wearables such as health monitors can all now not
only generate massive amounts of data but can draw back on aggregate analytics
to "improve" their performance over time. Big data analytics has been
identified as a key enabler for the IoT. In this chapter, we discuss various
avenues of the IoT where big data analytics either is already making a
significant impact or is on the cusp of doing so. We also discuss social
implications and areas of concern.Comment: 33 pages. draft of upcoming book chapter in Japkowicz and Stefanowski

Performance-Aware High-Performance Computing for Remote Sensing Big Data Analytics
The incredible increase in the volume of data emerging along with recent technological developments has made the analysis processes which use traditional approaches more difficult for many organizations. Especially applications involving subjects that require timely processing and big data such as satellite imagery, sensor data, bank operations, web servers, and social networks require efficient mechanisms for collecting, storing, processing, and analyzing these data. At this point, big data analytics, which contains data mining, machine learning, statistics, and similar techniques, comes to the help of organizations for end-to-end managing of the data. In this chapter, we introduce a novel high-performance computing system on the geo-distributed private cloud for remote sensing applications, which takes advantages of network topology, exploits utilization and workloads of CPU, storage, and memory resources in a distributed fashion, and optimizes resource allocation for realizing big data analytics efficiently
Internet of things
Manual of Digital Earth / Editors: Huadong Guo, Michael F. Goodchild, Alessandro Annoni .- Springer, 2020 .- ISBN: 978-981-32-9915-3Digital Earth was born with the aim of replicating the real world within the digital world. Many efforts have been made to observe and sense the Earth, both from space (remote sensing) and by using in situ sensors. Focusing on the latter, advances in Digital Earth have established vital bridges to exploit these sensors and their networks by taking location as a key element. The current era of connectivity envisions that everything is connected to everything. The concept of the Internet of Things(IoT)emergedasaholisticproposaltoenableanecosystemofvaried, heterogeneous networked objects and devices to speak to and interact with each other. To make the IoT ecosystem a reality, it is necessary to understand the electronic components, communication protocols, real-time analysis techniques, and the location of the objects and devices. The IoT ecosystem and the Digital Earth (DE) jointly form interrelated infrastructures for addressing today’s pressing issues and complex challenges. In this chapter, we explore the synergies and frictions in establishing an efficient and permanent collaboration between the two infrastructures, in order to adequately address multidisciplinary and increasingly complex real-world problems. Although there are still some pending issues, the identified synergies generate optimism for a true collaboration between the Internet of Things and the Digital Earth
Medical data processing and analysis for remote health and activities monitoring
Recent developments in sensor technology, wearable computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and wireless communication have given rise to research in ubiquitous healthcare and remote monitoring of human\u2019s health and activities. Health monitoring systems involve processing and analysis of data retrieved from smartphones, smart watches, smart bracelets, as well as various sensors and wearable devices. Such systems enable continuous monitoring of patients psychological and health conditions by sensing and transmitting measurements such as heart rate, electrocardiogram, body temperature, respiratory rate, chest sounds, or blood pressure. Pervasive healthcare, as a relevant application domain in this context, aims at revolutionizing the delivery of medical services through a medical assistive environment and facilitates the independent living of patients. In this chapter, we discuss (1) data collection, fusion, ownership and privacy issues; (2) models, technologies and solutions for medical data processing and analysis; (3) big medical data analytics for remote health monitoring; (4) research challenges and opportunities in medical data analytics; (5) examples of case studies and practical solutions
Recent advances in industrial wireless sensor networks towards efficient management in IoT
With the accelerated development of Internet-of- Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSN) are gaining importance in the continued advancement of information and communication technologies, and have been connected and integrated with Internet in vast industrial applications. However, given the fact that most wireless sensor devices are resource constrained and operate on batteries, the communication overhead and power consumption are therefore important issues for wireless sensor networks design. In order to efficiently manage these wireless sensor devices in a unified manner, the industrial authorities should be able to provide a network infrastructure supporting various WSN applications and services that facilitate the management of sensor-equipped real-world entities. This paper presents an overview of industrial ecosystem, technical architecture, industrial device management standards and our latest research activity in developing a WSN management system. The key approach to enable efficient and reliable management of WSN within such an infrastructure is a cross layer design of lightweight and cloud-based RESTful web service
Scalable analysis of multitemporal images using an array database
Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Geospatial TechnologiesMassive archives of earth observation data are now available and the size of this data is increasing at a tremendous rate. This data is a very important resource and has a variety of applications including monitoring change, forestry application, agricultural application and urban planning. At the same time, they also possess challenge of storage, management, and high computational needs. In this study SciDB, an array-based database is used to store, manage and process multitemporal satellite imagery. The major aim of this study is to investigate the performance of SciDB based scalable solution to run arithmetic operation, simple time series analysis and complex time series analysis on multitemporal satellite imagery. This study provides better insight of SciDB architecture and provides suggestions for better performance in SciDB for remote sensing jobs. The research also compared the performance of time series analysis on SciDB array with file-based analysis using multicore parallelization (Using „Parallel‟ Package of R). It is found that SciDB provides a faster solution for time series analysis. However, SciDB might not be the best solution if the data size is smaller. Also, relative immaturity of SciDB and limited inherent support of remote sensing operations increases effort for the scientist to develop SciDB based solution. Nevertheless, SciDB has the potential to meet the ever increasing storage, management and computational need of big remote sensing data
Cloud and IoT-based emerging services systems
The emerging services and analytics advocate the service delivery in a polymorphic view that successfully serves a variety of audience. The amalgamation of numerous modern technologies such as cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data is the potential support behind the emerging services Systems. Today, IoT, also dubbed as ubiquitous sensing is taking the center stage over the traditional paradigm. The evolution of IoT necessitates the expansion of cloud horizon to deal with emerging challenges. In this paper, we study the cloud-based emerging services, useful in IoT paradigm, that support the effective data analytics. Also, we conceive a new classification called CNNC {Clouda, NNClouda} for cloud data models; further, some important case studies are also discussed to further strengthen the classification. An emerging service, data analytics in autonomous vehicles, is then described in details. Challenges and recommendations related to privacy, security and ethical concerns have been discussed
Middleware Technologies for Cloud of Things - a survey
The next wave of communication and applications rely on the new services
provided by Internet of Things which is becoming an important aspect in human
and machines future. The IoT services are a key solution for providing smart
environments in homes, buildings and cities. In the era of a massive number of
connected things and objects with a high grow rate, several challenges have
been raised such as management, aggregation and storage for big produced data.
In order to tackle some of these issues, cloud computing emerged to IoT as
Cloud of Things (CoT) which provides virtually unlimited cloud services to
enhance the large scale IoT platforms. There are several factors to be
considered in design and implementation of a CoT platform. One of the most
important and challenging problems is the heterogeneity of different objects.
This problem can be addressed by deploying suitable "Middleware". Middleware
sits between things and applications that make a reliable platform for
communication among things with different interfaces, operating systems, and
architectures. The main aim of this paper is to study the middleware
technologies for CoT. Toward this end, we first present the main features and
characteristics of middlewares. Next we study different architecture styles and
service domains. Then we presents several middlewares that are suitable for CoT
based platforms and lastly a list of current challenges and issues in design of
CoT based middlewares is discussed.Comment: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352864817301268,
