    Explanation plug-in for stream-based collaborative filtering

    Collaborative filtering is a widely used recommendation technique, which often relies on rating information shared by users, i.e., crowdsourced data. These filters rely on predictive algorithms, such as, memory or model based predictors, to build direct or latent user and item profiles from crowdsourced data. To predict unknown ratings, memory-based approaches rely on the similarity between users or items, whereas model-based mechanisms explore user and item latent profiles. However, many of these filters are opaque by design, leaving users with unexplained recommendations. To overcome this drawback, this paper introduces Explug, a local model-agnostic plug-in that works alongside stream-based collaborative filters to reorder and explain recommendations. The explanations are based on incremental user Trust & Reputation profiling and co-rater relationships. Experiments performed with crowdsourced data from TripAdvisor show that Explug explains and improves the quality of stream-based collaborative filter recommendations.Xunta de Galicia | Ref.     Recommendation in Enterprise 2.0 Social Media Streams

    A social media stream allows users to share user-generated content as well as aggregate different external sources into one single stream. In Enterprise 2.0 such social media streams empower co-workers to share their information and to work efficiently and effectively together while replacing email communication. As more users share information it becomes impossible to read the complete stream leading to an information overload. Therefore, it is crucial to provide the users a personalized stream that suggests important and unread messages. The main characteristic of an Enterprise 2.0 social media stream is that co-workers work together on projects represented by topics: the stream is topic-centered and not user-centered as in public streams such as Facebook or Twitter. A lot of work has been done dealing with recommendation in a stream or for news recommendation. However, none of the current research approaches deal with the characteristics of an Enterprise 2.0 social media stream to recommend messages. The existing systems described in the research mainly deal with news recommendation for public streams and lack the applicability for Enterprise 2.0 social media streams. In this thesis a recommender concept is developed that allows the recommendation of messages in an Enterprise 2.0 social media stream. The basic idea is to extract features from a new message and use those features to compute a relevance score for a user. Additionally, those features are used to learn a user model and then use the user model for scoring new messages. This idea works without using explicit user feedback and assures a high user acceptance because no intense rating of messages is necessary. With this idea a content-based and collaborative-based approach is developed. To reflect the topic-centered streams a topic-specific user model is introduced which learns a user model independently for each topic. There are constantly new terms that occur in the stream of messages. For improving the quality of the recommendation (by finding more relevant messages) the recommender should be able to handle the new terms. Therefore, an approach is developed which adapts a user model if unknown terms occur by using terms of similar users or topics. Also, a short- and long-term approach is developed which tries to detect short-term interests of users. Only if the interest of a user occurs repeatedly over a certain time span are terms transferred to the long-term user model. The approaches are evaluated against a dataset obtained through an Enterprise 2.0 social media stream application. The evaluation shows the overall applicability of the concept. Specifically the evaluation shows that a topic-specific user model outperforms a global user model and also that adapting the user model according to similar users leads to an increase in the quality of the recommendation. Interestingly, the collaborative-based approach cannot reach the quality of the content-based approach

    Exploring Social Recommendations with Visual Diversity-Promoting Interfaces

    The beyond-relevance objectives of recommender systems have been drawing more and more attention. For example, a diversity-enhanced interface has been shown to associate positively with overall levels of user satisfaction. However, little is known about how users adopt diversity-enhanced interfaces to accomplish various real-world tasks. In this article, we present two attempts at creating a visual diversity-enhanced interface that presents recommendations beyond a simple ranked list. Our goal was to design a recommender system interface to help users explore the different relevance prospects of recommended items in parallel and to stress their diversity. Two within-subject user studies in the context of social recommendation at academic conferences were conducted to compare our visual interfaces. Results from our user study show that the visual interfaces significantly reduced the exploration efforts required for given tasks and helped users to perceive the recommendation diversity. We show that the users examined a diverse set of recommended items while experiencing an improvement in overall user satisfaction. Also, the users’ subjective evaluations show significant improvement in many user-centric metrics. Experiences are discussed that shed light on avenues for future interface designs

    Feature Extraction and Duplicate Detection for Text Mining: A Survey

    Text mining, also known as Intelligent Text Analysis is an important research area. It is very difficult to focus on the most appropriate information due to the high dimensionality of data. Feature Extraction is one of the important techniques in data reduction to discover the most important features. Proce- ssing massive amount of data stored in a unstructured form is a challenging task. Several pre-processing methods and algo- rithms are needed to extract useful features from huge amount of data. The survey covers different text summarization, classi- fication, clustering methods to discover useful features and also discovering query facets which are multiple groups of words or phrases that explain and summarize the content covered by a query thereby reducing time taken by the user. Dealing with collection of text documents, it is also very important to filter out duplicate data. Once duplicates are deleted, it is recommended to replace the removed duplicates. Hence we also review the literature on duplicate detection and data fusion (remove and replace duplicates).The survey provides existing text mining techniques to extract relevant features, detect duplicates and to replace the duplicate data to get fine grained knowledge to the user

    Improving e-commerce product recommendation using semantic context and sequential historical purchases

    Collaborative Filtering (CF)-based recommendation methods suffer from (i) sparsity (have low user–item interactions) and (ii) cold start (an item cannot be recommended if no ratings exist). Systems using clustering and pattern mining (frequent and sequential) with similarity measures between clicks and purchases for next-item recommendation cannot perform well when the matrix is sparse, due to rapid increase in number of items. Additionally, they suffer from: (i) lack of personalization: patterns are not targeted for a specific customer and (ii) lack of semantics among recommended items: they can only recommend items that exist as a result of a matching rule generated from frequent sequential purchase pattern(s). To better understand users’ preferences and to infer the inherent meaning of items, this paper proposes a method to explore semantic associations between items obtained by utilizing item (products’) metadata such as title, description and brand based on their semantic context (co-purchased and co-reviewed products). The semantics of these interactions will be obtained through distributional hypothesis, which learns an item’s representation by analyzing the context (neighborhood) in which it is used. The idea is that items co-occurring in a context are likely to be semantically similar to each other (e.g., items in a user purchase sequence). The semantics are then integrated into different phases of recommendation process such as (i) preprocessing, to learn associations between items, (ii) candidate generation, while mining sequential patterns and in collaborative filtering to select top-N neighbors and (iii) output (recommendation). Experiments performed on publically available E-commerce data set show that the proposed model performed well and reflected user preferences by recommending semantically similar and sequential products

    Network-aware recommendations in online social networks

    Along with the rapid increase of using social networks sites such as Twitter, a massive number of tweets published every day which generally affect the users decision to forward what they receive of information, and result in making them feel overwhelmed with this information. Then, it is important for this services to help the users not lose their focus from what is close to their interests, and to find potentially interesting tweets. The problem that can occur in this case is called information overload, where an individual will encounter too much information in a short time period. For instance, in Twitter, the user can see a large number of tweets posted by her followees. To sort out this issue, recommender systems are used to give contents that match the user's needs. This thesis presents a tweet-recommendation approach aiming at proposing novel tweets to users and achieving improvement over baseline. For this reason, we propose to exploit network, content, and retweet analyses for making recommendations of tweets. The main objective of this research is to recommend tweets that are unseen by the user (i.e., they do not appear in the user timeline) because nobody in her social circles published or retweeted them. To achieve this goal, we create the user's ego-network up to depth two and apply the transitivity property of the \emph{friends-of-friends} relationship to determine interesting recommendations. After this step, we apply cosine similarity and Jaccard distance as similarity measures for the candidate tweets obtained from the network analysis using bigrams. We also count the mutual retweets between the ego user and candidate users as a measure of shared similar tastes. The values of these features are compared together for each of the candidate tweets using pairwise comparisons in order to determine interesting recommendations that are ranked to best match the user's interests. Experimental results demonstrate through a real user study that our approach improves the state-of-the-art technique. In addition to the efficiency of our approach in finding relevant contents, it is also characterized by the fact of providing novel tweets, which solves the over-specialization challenge or serendipity problem that appears when using content-based recommender systems as a stand alone approach of recommendation

    Application of Improved Collaborative Filtering in the Recommendation of E-commerce Commodities

    Problems such as low recommendation precision and efficiency often exist in traditional collaborative filtering because of the huge basic data volume. In order to solve these problems, we proposed a new algorithm which combines collaborative filtering and support vector machine (SVM). Different with traditional collaborative filtering, we used SVM to classify commodities into positive and negative feedbacks. Then we selected the commodities that have positive feedback to calculate the comprehensive grades of marks and comments. After that, we build SVM-based collaborative filtering algorithm. Experiments on Taobao data (a Chinese online shopping website owned by Alibaba) showed that the algorithm has good recommendation precision and recommendation efficiency, thus having certain practical value in the E-commerce industry
