    Artificial intelligence is deeply involved in our daily lives via reinforcing the digital transformation of modern economies and infrastructure. It relies on powerful computing clusters, which face bottlenecks of power consumption for both data transmission and intensive computing. Meanwhile, optics (especially optical communications, which underpin today’s telecommunications) is penetrating short-reach connections down to the chip level, thus meeting with AI technology and creating numerous opportunities. This book is about the marriage of optics and AI and how each part can benefit from the other. Optics facilitates on-chip neural networks based on fast optical computing and energy-efficient interconnects and communications. On the other hand, AI enables efficient tools to address the challenges of today’s optical communication networks, which behave in an increasingly complex manner.     Optical Transmission Systems based on the Nonlinear Fourier Transformation

    Solitons are stable pulse shapes, which propagate linearly and maintain their shape despite the highly nonlinear fiber optical channel. A challenge in the use of these signal pulses in optical data transmission is to multiplex them with high efficiency. One way to multiplex many solitons is the nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT). With the help of the NFT, signal spectra can be calculated which propagate linearly through a nonlinear channel. Thus, in perspective, it is possible to perform linear transmissions even in highly nonlinear regions with high signal power levels. The NFT decomposes a signal into a dispersive and a solitonic part. The dispersive part is similar to spectra of the conventional linear Fourier transform and dominates especially at low signal powers. As soon as the total power of a signal exceeds a certain limit, solitons arise. A disadvantage of solitons generated digitally by the NFT is their complex shape due to, for example, high electrical bandwidths or a poor peak-to-average power ratio. In the course of this work, a scalable system architecture of a photonic integrated circuit based on a silicon chip was designed, which allows to multiplex several simple solitons tightly together to push the complex electrical generation of higher order solitons into the optical domain. This photonic integrated circuit was subsequently designed and fabricated by the Institute of Integrated Photonics at RWTH Aachen University. Using this novel system architecture and additional equalization concepts designed in this work, soliton transmissions with up to four channels could be successfully realized over more than 5000 km with a very high spectral efficiency of 0.5 b/s/Hz in the soliton range

    Comparison between Frame-Constrained Fix-Pixel-Value and Frame-Free Spiking-Dynamic-Pixel ConvNets for Visual Processing

    Most scene segmentation and categorization architectures for the extraction of features in images and patches make exhaustive use of 2D convolution operations for template matching, template search, and denoising. Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets) are one example of such architectures that can implement general-purpose bio-inspired vision systems. In standard digital computers 2D convolutions are usually expensive in terms of resource consumption and impose severe limitations for efficient real-time applications. Nevertheless, neuro-cortex inspired solutions, like dedicated Frame-Based or Frame-Free Spiking ConvNet Convolution Processors, are advancing real-time visual processing. These two approaches share the neural inspiration, but each of them solves the problem in different ways. Frame-Based ConvNets process frame by frame video information in a very robust and fast way that requires to use and share the available hardware resources (such as: multipliers, adders). Hardware resources are fixed- and time-multiplexed by fetching data in and out. Thus memory bandwidth and size is important for good performance. On the other hand, spike-based convolution processors are a frame-free alternative that is able to perform convolution of a spike-based source of visual information with very low latency, which makes ideal for very high-speed applications. However, hardware resources need to be available all the time and cannot be time-multiplexed. Thus, hardware should be modular, reconfigurable, and expansible. Hardware implementations in both VLSI custom integrated circuits (digital and analog) and FPGA have been already used to demonstrate the performance of these systems.     Detection-assisted Object Tracking by Mobile Cameras

    Tracking-by-detection is a class of new tracking approaches that utilizes recent development of object detection algorithms. This type of approach performs object detection for each frame and uses data association algorithms to associate new observations to existing targets. Inspired by the core idea of the tracking-by-detection framework, we propose a new framework called detection-assisted tracking where object detection algorithm provides help to the tracking algorithm when such help is necessary; thus object detection, a very time consuming task, is performed only when needed. The proposed framework is also able to handle complicated scenarios where cameras are allowed to move, and occlusion or multiple similar objects exist. We also port the core component of the proposed framework, the detector, onto embedded smart cameras. Contrary to traditional scenarios where the smart cameras are assumed to be static, we allow the smart cameras to move around in the scene. Our approach employs histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) object detector for foreground detection, to enable more robust detection on mobile platform. Traditional background subtraction methods are not suitable for mobile platforms where the background changes constantly. Adviser: Senem Velipasalar and Mustafa Cenk Gurso

This corpus is used to test a method for the detection of hidden intertextuality (commonly named "plagiarism"). The intertextual distance, combined with the sliding window and with various classification techniques, identifies these duplications with a very low risk of error. These experiments also show that several factors blur the identity of the scientific author, including variable group authorship and the high levels of intertextuality accepted, and sometimes desired, in scientific papers on the same topic
