    Quality of Service over Specific Link Layers: state of the art report

    The Integrated Services concept is proposed as an enhancement to the current Internet architecture, to provide a better Quality of Service (QoS) than that provided by the traditional Best-Effort service. The features of the Integrated Services are explained in this report. To support Integrated Services, certain requirements are posed on the underlying link layer. These requirements are studied by the Integrated Services over Specific Link Layers (ISSLL) IETF working group. The status of this ongoing research is reported in this document. To be more specific, the solutions to provide Integrated Services over ATM, IEEE 802 LAN technologies and low-bitrate links are evaluated in detail. The ISSLL working group has not yet studied the requirements, that are posed on the underlying link layer, when this link layer is wireless. Therefore, this state of the art report is extended with an identification of the requirements that are posed on the underlying wireless link, to provide differentiated Quality of Service

Nesse contexto, os aspectos não-funcionais dos sistemas, que descrevem o desempenho das aplicações, tornam-se cada vez mais importantes. Esses aspectos, agrupados sob o nome "Qualidade de Serviço" , são endereçados nesta dissertação, sob o contexto de plataformas distribuídas e das redes ATM. Esta dissertação propõe um modelo de Qualidade de Serviço de múltiplos níveis para.a plataforma Multiware, englobando a especificação, negociação e controle da Qualidade de Serviço. O modelo proposto é baseado em redes ATM, no modelo RM-ODP e na arquitetura CORBA. Visando a validação do modelo, foi desenvolvido um protótipo que implementa protocolos nos níveis de rede, de transporte e de distribuição.Abstract: The recent changes occurred on the network computing paradigm, sealed by the appearance of complex distributed applications and the broad use of multimedia, represents a new challenge to the protocols and distributed platforms in use today. In this context, non-functional aspects of the systems, representing the performance of the applications, became very important. Those aspects, under que name "Quality of Service" , are addressed here, in the context of distributed platforms and ATM networks. This work proposes a Quality of Service model with multiple levels to the Multiware platform, covering specification, negotiation and control of the quality of service. This model is based on ATM networks, RM-ODP model and CORBA architecture.     IP and ATM integration: A New paradigm in multi-service internetworking

    ATM is a widespread technology adopted by many to support advanced data communication, in particular efficient Internet services provision. The expected challenges of multimedia communication together with the increasing massive utilization of IP-based applications urgently require redesign of networking solutions in terms of both new functionalities and enhanced performance. However, the networking context is affected by so many changes, and to some extent chaotic growth, that any approach based on a structured and complex top-down architecture is unlikely to be applicable. Instead, an approach based on finding out the best match between realistic service requirements and the pragmatic, intelligent use of technical opportunities made available by the product market seems more appropriate. By following this approach, innovations and improvements can be introduced at different times, not necessarily complying with each other according to a coherent overall design. With the aim of pursuing feasible innovations in the different networking aspects, we look at both IP and ATM internetworking in order to investigating a few of the most crucial topics/ issues related to the IP and ATM integration perspective. This research would also address various means of internetworking the Internet Protocol (IP) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) with an objective of identifying the best possible means of delivering Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for multi-service applications, exploiting the meritorious features that IP and ATM have to offer. Although IP and ATM often have been viewed as competitors, their complementary strengths and limitations from a natural alliance that combines the best aspects of both the technologies. For instance, one limitation of ATM networks has been the relatively large gap between the speed of the network paths and the control operations needed to configure those data paths to meet changing user needs. IP\u27s greatest strength, on the other hand, is the inherent flexibility and its capacity to adapt rapidly to changing conditions. These complementary strengths and limitations make it natural to combine IP with ATM to obtain the best that each has to offer. Over time many models and architectures have evolved for IP/ATM internetworking and they have impacted the fundamental thinking in internetworking IP and ATM. These technologies, architectures, models and implementations will be reviewed in greater detail in addressing possible issues in integrating these architectures s in a multi-service, enterprise network. The objective being to make recommendations as to the best means of interworking the two in exploiting the salient features of one another to provide a faster, reliable, scalable, robust, QoS aware network in the most economical manner. How IP will be carried over ATM when a commercial worldwide ATM network is deployed is not addressed and the details of such a network still remain in a state of flux to specify anything concrete. Our research findings culminated with a strong recommendation that the best model to adopt, in light of the impending integrated service requirements of future multi-service environments, is an ATM core with IP at the edges to realize the best of both technologies in delivering QoS guarantees in a seamless manner to any node in the enterprise

    Event-B in the Institutional Framework: Defining a Semantics, Modularisation Constructs and Interoperability for a Specification Language

    Event-B is an industrial-strength specification language for verifying the properties of a given system’s specification. It is supported by its Eclipse-based IDE, Rodin, and uses the process of refinement to model systems at different levels of abstraction. Although a mature formalism, Event-B has a number of limitations. In this thesis, we demonstrate that Event-B lacks formally defined modularisation constructs. Additionally, interoperability between Event-B and other formalisms has been achieved in an ad hoc manner. Moreover, although a formal language, Event-B does not have a formal semantics. We address each of these limitations in this thesis using the theory of institutions. The theory of institutions provides a category-theoretic way of representing a formalism. Formalisms that have been represented as institutions gain access to an array of generic specification-building operators that can be used to modularise specifications in a formalismindependent manner. In the theory of institutions, there are constructs (known as institution (co)morphisms) that provide us with the facility to create interoperability between formalisms in a mathematically sound way. The main contribution of this thesis is the definition of an institution for Event-B, EVT, which allows us to address its identified limitations. To this end, we formally define a translational semantics from Event- B to EVT. We show how specification-building operators can provide a unified set of modularisation constructs for Event-B. In fact, the institutional framework that we have incorporated Event-B into is more accommodating to modularisation than the current state-of-the-art for Rodin. Furthermore, we present institution morphisms that facilitate interoperability between the respective institutions for Event-B and UML. This approach is more generic than the current approach to interoperability for Event-B and in fact, allows access to any formalism or logic that has already been defined as an institution. Finally, by defining EVT, we have outlined the steps required in order to include similar formalisms into the institutional framework. Hence, this thesis acts as a template for defining an institution for a specification language

    Entwurfsbegleitende Leistungsanalyse für SDL-basiertes Design multimedialer Internet-Transportsysteme

    Neben der funktionalen Korrektheit von komplexen Kommunikationssystemen spielt eine ausreichende Performance dieser Systeme eine immer wichtigere Rolle. Dabei ist es notwendig, Performance-Aspekte bereits in frühen Entwurfsphasen und nicht erst nach der Implementierung der Systeme zu berücksichtigen. Die vorliegende Arbeit präsentiert eine Methodik zur entwurfsbegleitenden, modellgestützten Leistungsanalyse von Kommunikationsprotokollen, die mit Hilfe der Sprache SDL formal spezifiziert wurden. Die vorgestellte Methodik verwendet dazu Beschreibungsmechanismen, Verfahren und Werkzeuge, die bereits im Entwurfsprozeß dieser Systeme verwendet werden. Für die wichtigsten Implementierungsansätze von Kommunikationsprotokollen werden Performance-Bausteine vorgestellt und deren Verwendung erläutert. Die Tragfähigkeit der entwickelten Methodik wird durch eine große Fallstudie im Kontext von Reservierungsprotokollen zur Unterstützung von Multimedia-Anwendungen im Internet demonstriert. Dabei werden nicht nur die informellen Angaben der vorhandenen RFCs in formale SDL-Beschreibungen umgesetzt, sondern auch als existent vorausgesetzte Ressource-Management-Funktionen entwickelt und analysiert. Die vorliegende Arbeit schließt so die bisher bestehende Lücke im SDL-basierten Entwurfsprozeß verteilter reaktiver Systeme und ermöglicht die modellgestützte Betrachtung von Performance-Aspekten in den frühen Phasen des Entwurfsprozesses

    Architecture à qualité de service pour systèmes satellites DVB-S/RCS dans un contexte NGN

    L'objet de cette thèse est de doter les réseaux satellites d'accès géostationnaires d'une architecture de QoS compatible avec l'infrastructure NGN (Next Generation Network) qui entend réaliser la convergence des réseaux et services de communication existants et à venir. Dans une première étape, nous établissons un modèle de QoS NGN s'inspirant principalement de l'évolution des architectures de QoS dans les réseaux IP. Dans une deuxième étape, nous démontrons que les réseaux satellites ne disposent pas, en l'état actuel, d'une architecture de QoS suffisamment mature pour assurer un accès large bande aux futurs services IP multimédias. Afin d'y remédier, nous spécifions une architecture de QoS NGN unifiée assurant une étroite collaboration entre les mécanismes de QoS déployés à différents niveaux de communication (Application, Session, Réseau et MAC). Elle assure à la fois une différenciation de la QoS adaptée aux besoins des différentes classes d'applications au niveau IP tout en optimisant l'utilisation des ressources satellites via des mécanismes de bande passante à la demande au niveau MAC. Deux solutions applicatives assurant la corrélation dynamique entre les applications et les services réseaux différenciés sont également spécifiées et implémentées. Enfin un émulateur satellite de niveau réseau a été implémenté et nous a permis d'évaluer les garanties de QoS offertes par notre architecture et de valider leur conformité avec les besoins d'applications multimédias réelles. ABSTRACT : This thesis deals with the integration of geostationary access satellite networks in the NGN (Next Generation Network) infrastructure, a global QoS-enabled communication network based on IP. The first part depicts this multiservice ubiquitous infrastructure anchored on a clean separation between a transport/network domain and a service/application domain. Then a unified NGN control and management architecture, mainly inspired by the past and current IP QoS architectures, is proposed. In a second part, starting from this model and through a critical analysis of current DVB-S/RCS satellite systems, we demonstrate that satellite QoS architectures are not mature enough to support broadband access to future multimedia services and to integrate into the emerging NGN infrastructure. In order to cope with these issues, a NGNcompliant QoS architecture for DVB-S/RCS systems is defined. It relies on a cross-layer approach based on a tight interaction between QoS mechanisms available at different communication layers (Application, Session, Network and MAC). It aims at maximizing satellite capacity utilization at different granularity levels through a relevant configuration of DiffServ services using session/application signalling information and the use of optimized bandwidth on demand allocation schemes at the MAC layer. Application solutions (QoS Agent and QoS SIP Proxy) were developed while the satellite network with its associated QoS architecture was implemented through a network emulator. This latter enables us to evaluate the QoS guarantees provided by this architecture and to validate its appropriateness with real multimedia applications needs
