    Real-Time I/O System for Many-core Embedded Systems

    In modern real-time embedded systems, time predictability is vital. This extends to I/O operations which require predictability, timing-accuracy, enhanced performance, scalability, parallel access and isolation. Currently, existing approaches cannot achieve all these requirements at the same time. In this thesis, we propose a framework of hardware-implemented real-time I/O virtualization system to meet all these requirements simultaneously, termed BlueIO. BlueIO integrates the important functionalities of I/O virtualization and low layer I/O drivers (achieved via Virtualized Complicated Device Controller (VCDC)), as well as a clock cycle level timing-accurate I/O controller (i.e. GPIO Command Processor (GPIOCP)). BlueIO provides this functionality in the hardware layer, supporting abstract virtualized access to I/O devices from the software domain. The hardware implementation includes I/O virtualization and I/O drivers provide isolation and parallel (concurrent) access to I/O operations and improves I/O performance. Furthermore, the approach includes GPIOCP to guarantee that I/O operations will occur at a specific clock cycle (i.e. be timing-accurate and predictable). This thesis proposes the design and implementation of BlueIO, together with its components — GPIOCP and VCDC. It is demonstrated how a BlueIO-based system can be exploited to meet real-time requirements with significant improvements in I/O performance and low running cost on different OSs. The thesis presents a hardware consumption analysis of BlueIO, in order to show that it linearly scales with the number of CPUs and I/O devices, evidenced by the implementation which targets both FPGA and VLSI. Finally, the thesis proposes a scalable real-time hardware hypervisor termed BlueVisor, which is built upon GPIOCP, VCDC and BlueIO. BlueVisor enables predictable virtualization on CPU, memory, and I/O; together with fast interrupt handling and inter-virtual machine communication. BlueVisor shows that the approaches towards I/O proposed in this thesis can be applied and expanded to different architectures and platforms, whilst maintaining real-time properties, performance and protection

    Multi-Tenant Cloud FPGA: A Survey on Security

    With the exponentially increasing demand for performance and scalability in cloud applications and systems, data center architectures evolved to integrate heterogeneous computing fabrics that leverage CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs. FPGAs differ from traditional processing platforms such as CPUs and GPUs in that they are reconfigurable at run-time, providing increased and customized performance, flexibility, and acceleration. FPGAs can perform large-scale search optimization, acceleration, and signal processing tasks compared with power, latency, and processing speed. Many public cloud provider giants, including Amazon, Huawei, Microsoft, Alibaba, etc., have already started integrating FPGA-based cloud acceleration services. While FPGAs in cloud applications enable customized acceleration with low power consumption, it also incurs new security challenges that still need to be reviewed. Allowing cloud users to reconfigure the hardware design after deployment could open the backdoors for malicious attackers, potentially putting the cloud platform at risk. Considering security risks, public cloud providers still don't offer multi-tenant FPGA services. This paper analyzes the security concerns of multi-tenant cloud FPGAs, gives a thorough description of the security problems associated with them, and discusses upcoming future challenges in this field of study

    Learning-based run-time power and energy management of multi/many-core systems: current and future trends

    Multi/Many-core systems are prevalent in several application domains targeting different scales of computing such as embedded and cloud computing. These systems are able to fulfil the everincreasing performance requirements by exploiting their parallel processing capabilities. However, effective power/energy management is required during system operations due to several reasons such as to increase the operational time of battery operated systems, reduce the energy cost of datacenters, and improve thermal efficiency and reliability. This article provides an extensive survey of learning-based run-time power/energy management approaches. The survey includes a taxonomy of the learning-based approaches. These approaches perform design-time and/or run-time power/energy management by employing some learning principles such as reinforcement learning. The survey also highlights the trends followed by the learning-based run-time power management approaches, their upcoming trends and open research challenges

    VLSI implementation of 4×4 Mesh topology for network-on-chip

    Nowadays, every electronic system, ranging from a small mobile phone to a satellite sent into space, has a System-on-Chip (SoC). Over the years, SoCs have undergone rapid evolution and are still progressing at a swift pace. But, due to this explosive evolution of semiconductor industry, the devices are scaling down at a rapid rate and hence, the SoCs today have become communication-centric. However, the existing bus architectures comprising of wires for global interconnection in SoC Designs are undergoing a design crisis as they are not able to keep up with the rate of scaling down of devices. In response to this crisis,Network-on-Chip (NoC) is an upcoming archetype, and is becoming a leading contender to replace the conventional bus architectures. Many Network-on-Chip topologies have been introduced in an attempt to tackle various chip architecture needs and routing techniques. A network simulator NS2 has been utilized in an attempt to simulate the functioning of some of the topologies like Mesh, Binary Tree, Torus and Butterfly Fat Tree (BFT). Their performances in various traffic scenarios has been assessed and compared taking throughput, maximum end-to-end latency and dropping probability as parameters. It can be inferred from simulation results that with respect to throughput and dropping probability, Torus topology has an upper hand over the others whereas BFT topology provides lower latency as compared to others. The Mesh topology is well-suited for incorporating regular-sized processing elements on a single chip. It is also quite simpler to design and incorporate various routing protocols into it as opposed to others. Thus, to validate the functioning of NoC on hardware, 4×4 Mesh architecture has been designed in VHDL and the same has been synthesized for Virtex II Pro FPGA

    Predictable multi-processor system on chip design for multimedia applications

    The design of multimedia systems has become increasingly complex due to consumer requirements. Consumers demand the functionalities offered by a huge desktop from these systems. Many of these systems are mobile. Therefore, power consumption and size of these devices should be small. These systems are increasingly becoming multi-processor based (MPSoCs) for the reasons of power and performance. Applications execute on these systems in different combinations also known as use-cases. Applications may have different performance requirements in each use-case. Currently, verification of all these use-cases takes bulk of the design effort. There is a need for analysis based techniques so that the platforms have a predictable behaviour and in turn provide guarantees on performance without expending precious man hours on verification. In this dissertation, techniques and architectures have been developed to design and manage these multi-processor based systems efficiently. The dissertation presents predictable architectural components for MPSoCs, a Predictable MPSoC design strategy, automatic platform synthesis tool, a run-time system and an MPSoC simulation technique. The introduction of predictability helps in rapid design of MPSoC platforms. Chapter 1 of the thesis studies the trends in modern multimedia applications and processor architectures. The chapter further highlights the problems in the design of MPSoC platforms and emphasizes the need of predictable design techniques. Predictable design techniques require predictable application and architectural components. The chapter further elaborates on Synchronous Data Flow Graphs which are used to model the applications throughout this thesis. The chapter presents the architecture template used in this thesis and enlists the contributions of the thesis. One of the contributions of this thesis is the design of a predictable component called communication assist. Chapter 2 of the thesis describes the architecture of this communication assist. The communication assist presented in this thesis not only decouples the communication from computation but also provides timing guarantees. Based on this communication assist, an MPSoC platform generation technique has been presented that can design MPSoC platforms capable of satisfying the throughput constraints of multiple applications in all use-cases. The technique is presented in Chapter 3. The design strategy uses three simple steps for platform design. In the first step it finds the required number of processors. The second step minimizes the communication interconnect between the processors and the third step minimizes the communication memory requirement of the platform. Further in Chapter 4, a tool has been developed to generate CA-based platforms for FPGAs. The output of this tool can be used to synthesize platforms on real hardware with the help of FPGA synthesis tools. The applications executing on these platforms often exhibit dynamism e.g. variation in task execution times and change in application throughput requirements. Further, new applications may often be added by consumers at run-time. Resource managers have been presented in literature to handle such dynamic situations. However, the scalability of these resource managers becomes an issue with the increase in number of processors and applications. Chapter 5 presents distributed run-time resource management techniques. Two versions of distributed resource managers have been presented which are scalable with the number of applications and processors. MPSoC platforms for real-time applications are designed assuming worst-case task execution times. It is known that the difference between average-case and worst-case behaviour can be quite large. Therefore, knowing the average case performance is also important for the system designer, and software simulation is often employed to estimate this. However, simulation in software is slow and does not scale with the number of applications and processing elements. In Chapter 6, a fast and scalable simulation methodology is introduced that can simulate the execution of multiple applications on an MPSoC platform. It is based on parallel execution of SDF (Synchronous Data Flow) models of applications. The simulation methodology uses Parallel Discrete Event Simulation (PDES) primitives and it is termed as "Smart Conservative PDES". The methodology generates a parallel simulator which is synthesizable on FPGAs. The framework can also be used to model dynamic arbitration policies which are difficult to analyse using models. The generated platform is also useful in carrying out Design Space Exploration as shown in the thesis. Finally, Chapter 7 summarizes the main findings and (practical) implications of the studies described in previous chapters of this dissertation. Using the contributions mentioned in the thesis, a designer can design and implement predictable multiprocessor based systems capable of satisfying throughput constraints of multiple applications in given set of use-cases, and employ resource management strategies to deal with dynamism in the applications. The chapter also describes the main limitations of this dissertation and makes suggestions for future research

    Automated Hardware Prototyping for 3D Network on Chips

    Vor mehr als 50 Jahren stellte Intel® Mitbegründer Gordon Moore eine Prognose zum Entwicklungsprozess der Transistortechnologie auf. Er prognostizierte, dass sich die Zahl der Transistoren in integrierten Schaltungen alle zwei Jahre verdoppeln wird. Seine Aussage ist immer noch gültig, aber ein Ende von Moores Gesetz ist in Sicht. Mit dem Ende von Moore’s Gesetz müssen neue Aspekte untersucht werden, um weiterhin die Leistung von integrierten Schaltungen zu steigern. Zwei mögliche Ansätze für "More than Moore” sind 3D-Integrationsverfahren und heterogene Systeme. Gleichzeitig entwickelt sich ein Trend hin zu Multi-Core Prozessoren, basierend auf Networks on chips (NoCs). Neben dem Ende des Mooreschen Gesetzes ergeben sich bei immer kleiner werdenden Technologiegrößen, vor allem jenseits der 60 nm, neue Herausforderungen. Eine Schwierigkeit ist die Wärmeableitung in großskalierten integrierten Schaltkreisen und die daraus resultierende Überhitzung des Chips. Um diesem Problem in modernen Multi-Core Architekturen zu begegnen, muss auch die Verlustleistung der Netzwerkressourcen stark reduziert werden. Diese Arbeit umfasst eine durch Hardware gesteuerte Kombination aus Frequenzskalierung und Power Gating für 3D On-Chip Netzwerke, einschließlich eines FPGA Prototypen. Dafür wurde ein Takt-synchrones 2D Netzwerk auf ein dreidimensionales asynchrones Netzwerk mit mehreren Frequenzbereichen erweitert. Zusätzlich wurde ein skalierbares Online-Power-Management System mit geringem Ressourcenaufwand entwickelt. Die Verifikation neuer Hardwarekomponenten ist einer der zeitaufwendigsten Schritte im Entwicklungsprozess hochintegrierter digitaler Schaltkreise. Um diese Aufgabe zu beschleunigen und um eine parallele Softwareentwicklung zu ermöglichen, wurde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit ein automatisiertes und benutzerfreundliches Tool für den Entwurf neuer Hardware Projekte entwickelt. Eine grafische Benutzeroberfläche zum Erstellen des gesamten Designablaufs, vom Erstellen der Architektur, Parameter Deklaration, Simulation, Synthese und Test ist Teil dieses Werkzeugs. Zudem stellt die Größe der Architektur für die Erstellung eines Prototypen eine besondere Herausforderung dar. Frühere Arbeiten haben es versäumt, eine schnelles und unkompliziertes Prototyping, insbesondere von Architekturen mit mehr als 50 Prozessorkernen, zu realisieren.
