The network-induced phenomena under consideration mainly include missing measurements, fading measurements, signal quantization, probabilistic sensor delays, sensor saturations, randomly occurring nonlinearities, and randomly occurring uncertainties. With respect to these network-induced phenomena, the developments on filtering and sliding mode design problems are systematically reviewed. In particular, concerning the network-induced phenomena, some recent results on the recursive filtering for time-varying nonlinear stochastic systems and sliding mode design for time-invariant nonlinear stochastic systems are given, respectively. Finally, conclusions are proposed and some potential future research works are pointed out. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant nos. 61134009, 61329301, 61333012, 61374127 and 11301118, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the UK under Grant no. Fuzzy-model-based robust fault detection with stochastic mixed time-delays and successive packet dropouts
This is the Post-Print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 IEEEThis paper is concerned with the network-based robust fault detection problem for a class of uncertain discrete-time Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy systems with stochastic mixed time delays and successive packet dropouts. The mixed time delays comprise both the multiple discrete time delays and the infinite distributed delays. A sequence of stochastic variables is introduced to govern the random occurrences of the discrete time delays, distributed time delays, and successive packet dropouts, where all the stochastic variables are mutually independent but obey the Bernoulli distribution. The main purpose of this paper is to design a fuzzy fault detection filter such that the overall fault detection dynamics is exponentially stable in the mean square and, at the same time, the error between the residual signal and the fault signal is made as small as possible. Sufficient conditions are first established via intensive stochastic analysis for the existence of the desired fuzzy fault detection filters, and then, the corresponding solvability conditions for the desired filter gains are established. In addition, the optimal performance index for the addressed robust fuzzy fault detection problem is obtained by solving an auxiliary convex optimization problem. An illustrative example is provided to show the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed design method. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 61028008, 60825303, 61004067,

Recent advances on filtering and control for nonlinear stochastic complex systems with incomplete information: A survey
This Article is provided by the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund - Copyright @ 2012 Hindawi PublishingSome recent advances on the filtering and control problems for nonlinear stochastic complex systems with incomplete information are surveyed. The incomplete information under consideration mainly includes missing measurements, randomly varying sensor delays, signal quantization, sensor saturations, and signal sampling. With such incomplete information, the developments on various filtering and control issues are reviewed in great detail. In particular, the addressed nonlinear stochastic complex systems are so comprehensive that they include conventional nonlinear stochastic systems, different kinds of complex networks, and a large class of sensor networks. The corresponding filtering and control technologies for such nonlinear stochastic complex systems are then discussed. Subsequently, some latest results on the filtering and control problems for the complex systems with incomplete information are given. Finally, conclusions are drawn and several possible future research directions are pointed out. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant nos. 61134009, 61104125, 61028008, 61174136, 60974030, and 61074129, the Qing Lan Project of Jiangsu Province of China, the Project sponsored by SRF for ROCS of SEM of China, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council EPSRC of the UK under Grant GR/S27658/01, the Royal Society of the UK, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany
Robust stabilization of hybrid uncertain stochastic systems by discrete-time feedback control
This paper aims to stabilize hybrid stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with norm bounded uncertainties by feedback controls based on the discrete-time observations of both state and mode. The control structure appears only in the drift part (the deterministic part) of an SDE and the controlled system will be robustly exponentially stable in mean-square. Our stabilization criteria are in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) whence the feedback controls can be designed more easily in practice. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of our results
On design of quantized fault detection filters with randomly occurring nonlinearities and mixed time-delays
This paper is concerned with the fault detection problem for a class of discrete-time systems with randomly occurring nonlinearities, mixed stochastic time-delays as well as measurement quantizations. The nonlinearities are assumed to occur in a random way. The mixed time-delays comprise both the multiple discrete time-delays and the infinite distributed delays that occur in a random way as well. A sequence of stochastic variables is introduced to govern the random occurrences of the nonlinearities, discrete time-delays and distributed time-delays, where all the stochastic variables are mutually independent but obey the Bernoulli distribution. The main purpose of this paper is to design a fault detection filter such that, in the presence of measurement quantization, the overall fault detection dynamics is exponentially stable in the mean square and, at the same time, the error between the residual signal and the fault signal is made as small as possible. Sufficient conditions are first established via intensive stochastic analysis for the existence of the desired fault detection filters, and then the explicit expression of the desired filter gains is derived by means of the feasibility of certain matrix inequalities. Also, the optimal performance index for the addressed fault detection problem can be obtained by solving an auxiliary convex optimization problem. A practical example is provided to show the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed design method

Observer-based H∞ control for systems with repeated scalar nonlinearities and multiple packet losses
This paper is concerned with the H∞ control problem for a class of systems with repeated scalar nonlinearities and multiple missing measurements. The nonlinear system is described by a discrete-time state equation involving a repeated scalar nonlinearity, which typically appears in recurrent neural networks. The measurement missing phenomenon is assumed to occur, simultaneously, in the communication channels from the sensor to the controller and from the controller to the actuator, where the missing probability for each sensor/actuator is governed by an individual random variable satisfying a certain probabilistic distribution in the interval [0 1]. Attention is focused on the analysis and design of an observer-based feedback controller such that the closed-loop control system is stochastically stable and preserves a guaranteed H∞ performance. Sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of admissible controllers. It is shown that the controller design problem under consideration is solvable if certain linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are feasible. Three examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the developed theoretical result

Almost sure H∞ filtering for nonlinear hybrid stochastic systems with mode-dependent interval delays
In this paper, the problem of almost sure H∞ filtering is studied for a class of nonlinear hybrid stochastic systems. In the system under investigation, Markovian jumping parameters, mode-dependent interval delays, nonzero exogenous disturbances as well as white noises are simultaneously taken into consideration to better model the real-world systems. Intensive stochastic analysis is carried out to obtain sufficient conditions for ensuring the almost surely exponential stability and the prescribed H∞ performance for the overall filtering error dynamics. Furthermore, the obtained results are applied to two classes of special hybrid stochastic systems with mode-dependent interval delays, where the desired filter gain is obtained in terms of the solutions to a set of linear matrix inequalities. Finally, two numerical examples are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed filter design scheme. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 61134009 and 61329301, the Royal Society of the UK, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany
Finite-horizon estimation of randomly occurring faults for a class of nonlinear time-varying systems
This paper is concerned with the finite-horizon estimation problem of randomly occurring faults for a class of nonlinear systems whose parameters are all time-varying. The faults are assumed to occur in a random way governed by two sets of Bernoulli distributed white sequences. The stochastic nonlinearities entering the system are described by statistical means that can cover several classes of well-studied nonlinearities. The aim of the problem is to estimate the random faults, over a finite horizon, such that the influence from the exogenous disturbances onto the estimation errors is attenuated at the given level quantified by an H∞-norm in the mean square sense. By using the completing squares method and stochastic analysis techniques, necessary and sufficient conditions are established for the existence of the desired finite-horizon H∞ fault estimator whose parameters are then obtained by solving coupled backward recursive Riccati difference equations (RDEs). A simulation example is utilized to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed fault estimation method

Fault Detection for Wireless Network Control Systems with Stochastic Uncertainties and Time Delays
The fault detection problem is investigated for a class of wireless network control systems which has stochastic uncertainties in the state-space matrices, combined with time delays and nonlinear disturbance. First, the system error observer is proposed. Then, by constructing proper Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, we acquire sufficient conditions to guarantee the stability of the fault detection observer for the discrete system, and observer gain is also derived by solving linear matrix inequalities. Finally, a simulation example shows that when a fault happens, the observer residual rises rapidly and fault can be quickly detected, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method
