Coded DS-CDMA Systems with Iterative Channel Estimation and no Pilot Symbols
In this paper, we describe direct-sequence code-division multiple-access
(DS-CDMA) systems with quadriphase-shift keying in which channel estimation,
coherent demodulation, and decoding are iteratively performed without the use
of any training or pilot symbols. An expectation-maximization
channel-estimation algorithm for the fading amplitude, phase, and the
interference power spectral density (PSD) due to the combined interference and
thermal noise is proposed for DS-CDMA systems with irregular repeat-accumulate
codes. After initial estimates of the fading amplitude, phase, and interference
PSD are obtained from the received symbols, subsequent values of these
parameters are iteratively updated by using the soft feedback from the channel
decoder. The updated estimates are combined with the received symbols and
iteratively passed to the decoder. The elimination of pilot symbols simplifies
the system design and allows either an enhanced information throughput, an
improved bit error rate, or greater spectral efficiency. The interference-PSD
estimation enables DS-CDMA systems to significantly suppress interference.Comment: To appear, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
A New Method For Increasing the Accuracy of EM-based Channel Estimation
It was recently shown that the detection performance can be significantly improved if the statistics of channel estimation errors are available and properly used at the receiver. Although in pilot-only channel estimation it is usually straightforward to characterize the statistics of channel estimation errors, this is not the case for the class of data-aided (semi-blind) channel estimation techniques. In this paper, we focus on the widely-used data-aided channel estimation techniques based on the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. This is achieved by a modified formulation of the EM algorithm which provides the receiver with the statistics of the estimation errors and properly using this additional information. Simulation results show that the proposed data-aided estimator outperform its classical counterparts in terms of accuracy, without requiring additional complexity at the receiver
Distributed stochastic optimization via matrix exponential learning
In this paper, we investigate a distributed learning scheme for a broad class
of stochastic optimization problems and games that arise in signal processing
and wireless communications. The proposed algorithm relies on the method of
matrix exponential learning (MXL) and only requires locally computable gradient
observations that are possibly imperfect and/or obsolete. To analyze it, we
introduce the notion of a stable Nash equilibrium and we show that the
algorithm is globally convergent to such equilibria - or locally convergent
when an equilibrium is only locally stable. We also derive an explicit linear
bound for the algorithm's convergence speed, which remains valid under
measurement errors and uncertainty of arbitrarily high variance. To validate
our theoretical analysis, we test the algorithm in realistic
multi-carrier/multiple-antenna wireless scenarios where several users seek to
maximize their energy efficiency. Our results show that learning allows users
to attain a net increase between 100% and 500% in energy efficiency, even under
very high uncertainty.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figure
Iterative channel estimation techniques for multiple input multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems
Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Izmir, 2007Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 77-78)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishxii, 78 leavesOrthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is well-known for its efficient high speed transmission and robustness to frequency-selective fading channels. On the other hand, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems have the ability to increase capacity and reliability of a wireless communication system compared to single-input single-output (SISO) systems. Hence, the integration of the two technologies has the potential to meet the ever growing demands of future communication systems. In these systems, channel estimation is very crucial to demodulate the data coherently. For a good channel estimation, spectral efficiency and lower computational complexity are two important points to be considered. In this thesis, we explore different channel estimation techniques in order to improve estimation performance by increasing the bandwidth efficiency and reducing the computational complexity for both SISO-OFDM and MIMO-OFDM systems. We first investigate pilot and Expectation-Maximization (EM)-based channel estimation techniques and compare their performances. Next, we explore different pilot arrangements by reducing the number of pilot symbols in one OFDM frame to improve bandwidth efficiency. We obtain the bit error rate and the channel estimation performance for these pilot arrangements. Then, in order to decrase the computational complexity, we propose an iterative channel estimation technique, which establishes a link between the decision block and channel estimation block using virtual subcarriers. We compare this proposed technique with EM-based channel estimation in terms of performance and complexity. These channel estimation techniques are also applied to STBC-OFDM and V-BLAST structured MIMO-OFDM systems. Finally, we investigate a joint EM-based channel estimation and signal detection technique for V-BLAST OFDM system
Semiblind iterative data detection for OFDM systems with CFO and doubly selective channels
Data detection for OFDM systems over unknown doubly selective channels (DSCs) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) is investigated. A semiblind iterative detection algorithm is developed based on the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. It iteratively estimates the CFO, channel and recovers the unknown data using only limited number of pilot subcarriers in one OFDM symbol. In addition, efficient initial CFO and channel estimates are also derived based on approximated maximum likelihood (ML) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) criteria respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed data detection algorithm converges in a few iterations and moreover, its performance is close to the ideal case with perfect CFO and channel state information. © 2010 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
