    A Briefing on Metrics and Risks for Autonomous Decision-Making in Aerospace Applications

    Significant technology advances will enable future aerospace systems to safely and reliably make decisions autonomously, or without human interaction. The decision-making may result in actions that enable an aircraft or spacecraft in an off-nominal state or with slightly degraded components to achieve mission performance and safety goals while reducing or avoiding damage to the aircraft or spacecraft. Some key technology enablers for autonomous decision-making include: a continuous state awareness through the maturation of the prognostics health management field, novel sensor development, and the considerable gains made in computation power and data processing bandwidth versus system size. Sophisticated algorithms and physics based models coupled with these technological advances allow reliable assessment of a system, subsystem, or components. Decisions that balance mission objectives and constraints with remaining useful life predictions can be made autonomously to maintain safety requirements, optimal performance, and ensure mission objectives. This autonomous approach to decision-making will come with new risks and benefits, some of which will be examined in this paper. To start, an account of previous work to categorize or quantify autonomy in aerospace systems will be presented. In addition, a survey of perceived risks in autonomous decision-making in the context of piloted aircraft and remotely piloted or completely autonomous unmanned autonomous systems (UAS) will be presented based on interviews that were conducted with individuals from industry, academia, and government

    NASA space station automation: AI-based technology review

    Research and Development projects in automation for the Space Station are discussed. Artificial Intelligence (AI) based automation technologies are planned to enhance crew safety through reduced need for EVA, increase crew productivity through the reduction of routine operations, increase space station autonomy, and augment space station capability through the use of teleoperation and robotics. AI technology will also be developed for the servicing of satellites at the Space Station, system monitoring and diagnosis, space manufacturing, and the assembly of large space structures

    Advanced Cosmic Ray Composition Experiment for Space Station (ACCESS)

    In 1994 the first high-energy particle physics experiment for the Space Station, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), was selected by NASA's Administrator as a joint collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The AMS program was chartered to place a magnetic spectrometer in Earth orbit and search for cosmic antimatter. A natural consequence of this decision was that NASA would begin to explore cost-effective ways through which the design and implementation of AMS might benefit other promising payload experiments which were evolving from the Office of Space Science. The first such experiment to come forward was ACCESS in 1996. It was proposed as a new mission concept in space physics to place a cosmic-ray experiment of weight, volume, and geometry similar to the AMS on the ISS, and replace the latter as its successor when the AMS is returned to Earth. This was to be an extension of NASA's sub-orbital balloon program, with balloon payloads serving as the precursor flights and heritage for ACCESS. The balloon programs have always been a cost-effective NASA resource since the particle physics instrumentation for balloon and space applications are directly related. The next step was to expand the process, pooling together expertise from various NASA centers and universities while opening up definition of the ACCESS science goals to the international community through the standard practice of peer-review. This process is still on-going and the Accommodation Study presented here will discuss the baseline definition of ACCESS as we understand it today.     Navigation System Fault Diagnosis for Underwater Vehicle

    This paper demonstrates fault diagnosis on unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) based on analysis of structure of the nonlinear dynamics. Residuals are generated using different approaches in structural analysis followed by statistical change detection. Hypothesis testing thresholds are made signal based to cope with non-ideal properties seen in real data. Detection of both sensor and thruster failures are demonstrated. Isolation is performed using the residual signature of detected faults and the change detection algorithm is used to assess severity of faults by estimating their magnitude. Numerical simulations and sea trial data show results with very favorable balance between detection and false alarm probabilities.(c) IFAC 2014.     System of Systems conceptual design methodology for space exploration

    The scope of the research is to identify and develop a design methodology for System-of-System (a set of elements and sub-elements able to interact and cooperate in order to complete a mission), based on models, methods and tools, to support the decision makers during the space exploration scenarios design and evaluation activity in line with the concurrent design philosophy. Considering all combinations of system parameters (such as crew size, orbits, launchers, spacecraft, ground and space infrastructures), a large number of mission concept options are possible, even though not all of them are optimal or even feasible. The design methodology is particularly useful in the first phases of the design process (Phase 0 and A) to choose rationally and objectively the best mission concepts that ensure the higher probability of mission success in compliance with the high level requirements deriving from the “user needs”. The first phases of the project are particularly critical for the success of the entire mission because the results of this activity are the starting point of the more costly detailed design phases. Thus, any criticality in the baseline design will involve inevitably into undesirable and costly radical system redesigns during the advanced design phases. For this reason, it is important to develop reliable mathematical models that allow prediction of the system performances notwithstanding the poorly defined environment of very high complexity. In conjunction with the development of the design methodology for system-of-systems and in support of it, a software tool has been developed. The tool has been developed into Matlab environment and provides users with a useful graphical interface. The tool integrates the model of the mission concept, the models of the space elements at system and subsystem level, the cost-effectiveness model or value, the sensitivity and multi-objective optimization analysis. The tool supports users to find a system design solution in compliance with requirements and constraints, such as mass budgets and costs, and provides them with information about cost-effectiveness of the mission. The developed methodology has been applied for the design of several space elements (Man Tended Free Flyer, Cargo Logistic Vehicle, Rover Locomotion System) and several mission scenarios (Moon surface infrastructure support, Cis-Lunar infrastructure delivering, Cis-Lunar infrastructure logistic support), in order to assess advantages and disadvantages of the proposed method. The results of the design activity have been discussed and accepted by the European Space Agency (ESA) and have also been compared and presented to the scientific community. Finally, in a particular case, the study of the locomotion system of a lunar rover, the results of the methodology have been verified through the production and testing of the same system

    Uncertainty Minimization in Robotic 3D Mapping Systems Operating in Dynamic Large-Scale Environments

    This dissertation research is motivated by the potential and promise of 3D sensing technologies in safety and security applications. With specific focus on unmanned robotic mapping to aid clean-up of hazardous environments, under-vehicle inspection, automatic runway/pavement inspection and modeling of urban environments, we develop modular, multi-sensor, multi-modality robotic 3D imaging prototypes using localization/navigation hardware, laser range scanners and video cameras. While deploying our multi-modality complementary approach to pose and structure recovery in dynamic real-world operating conditions, we observe several data fusion issues that state-of-the-art methodologies are not able to handle. Different bounds on the noise model of heterogeneous sensors, the dynamism of the operating conditions and the interaction of the sensing mechanisms with the environment introduce situations where sensors can intermittently degenerate to accuracy levels lower than their design specification. This observation necessitates the derivation of methods to integrate multi-sensor data considering sensor conflict, performance degradation and potential failure during operation. Our work in this dissertation contributes the derivation of a fault-diagnosis framework inspired by information complexity theory to the data fusion literature. We implement the framework as opportunistic sensing intelligence that is able to evolve a belief policy on the sensors within the multi-agent 3D mapping systems to survive and counter concerns of failure in challenging operating conditions. The implementation of the information-theoretic framework, in addition to eliminating failed/non-functional sensors and avoiding catastrophic fusion, is able to minimize uncertainty during autonomous operation by adaptively deciding to fuse or choose believable sensors. We demonstrate our framework through experiments in multi-sensor robot state localization in large scale dynamic environments and vision-based 3D inference. Our modular hardware and software design of robotic imaging prototypes along with the opportunistic sensing intelligence provides significant improvements towards autonomous accurate photo-realistic 3D mapping and remote visualization of scenes for the motivating applications
