    Reversible Session-Based Concurrency in Haskell

    A reversible semantics enables to undo computation steps. Reversing message-passing, concurrent programs is a challenging and delicate task; one typically aims at causally consistent reversible semantics. Prior work has addressed this challenge in the context of a process model of multiparty protocols (or choreographies). In this paper, we describe a Haskell implementation of this reversible operational seman- tics. We exploit algebraic data types to faithfully represent three core ingredients: a process calculus, multiparty session types, and forward and backward reduction semantics. Our implementation bears witness to the convenience of pure functional programming for implementing reversible languages

We do not claim existence of such shoes, but propose a similar programming abstraction in the context of typed lambda calculi.     Linear/non-Linear Types For Embedded Domain-Specific Languages

    Domain-specific languages are often embedded inside of general-purpose host languages so that the embedded language can take advantage of host-language data structures, libraries, and tools. However, when the domain-specific language uses linear types, existing techniques for embedded languages fall short. Linear type systems, which have applications in a wide variety of programming domains including mutable state, I/O, concurrency, and quantum computing, can manipulate embedded non-linear data via the linear type !σ. However, prior work has not been able to produce linear embedded languages that have full and easy access to host-language data, libraries, and tools. This dissertation proposes a new perspective on linear, embedded, domain-specific languages derived from the linear/non-linear (LNL) interpretation of linear logic. The LNL model consists of two distinct fragments---one with linear types and another with non-linear types---and provides a simple categorical interface between the two. This dissertation identifies the linear fragment with the linear embedded language and the non-linear fragment with the general-purpose host language. The effectiveness of this framework is illustrated via a number of examples, implemented in a variety of host languages. In Haskell, linear domain-specific languages using mutable state and concurrency can take advantage of the monad that arises from the LNL model. In Coq, the QWIRE quantum circuit language uses linearity to enforce the no-cloning axiom of quantum mechanics. In homotopy type theory, quantum transformations can be encoded as higher inductive types to simplify the presentation of a quantum equational theory. These examples serve as case studies that prove linear/non-linear type theory is a natural and expressive interface in which to embed linear domain-specific languages

    Revisiting Actor Programming in C++

    The actor model of computation has gained significant popularity over the last decade. Its high level of abstraction makes it appealing for concurrent applications in parallel and distributed systems. However, designing a real-world actor framework that subsumes full scalability, strong reliability, and high resource efficiency requires many conceptual and algorithmic additives to the original model. In this paper, we report on designing and building CAF, the "C++ Actor Framework". CAF targets at providing a concurrent and distributed native environment for scaling up to very large, high-performance applications, and equally well down to small constrained systems. We present the key specifications and design concepts---in particular a message-transparent architecture, type-safe message interfaces, and pattern matching facilities---that make native actors a viable approach for many robust, elastic, and highly distributed developments. We demonstrate the feasibility of CAF in three scenarios: first for elastic, upscaling environments, second for including heterogeneous hardware like GPGPUs, and third for distributed runtime systems. Extensive performance evaluations indicate ideal runtime behaviour for up to 64 cores at very low memory footprint, or in the presence of GPUs. In these tests, CAF continuously outperforms the competing actor environments Erlang, Charm++, SalsaLite, Scala, ActorFoundry, and even the OpenMPI.Comment: 33 page

    Observed communication semantics for classical processes

    Classical Linear Logic (CLL) has long inspired readings of its proofs as communicating processes. Wadler's CP calculus is one of these readings. Wadler gave CP an operational semantics by selecting a subset of the cut-elimination rules of CLL to use as reduction rules. This semantics has an appealing close connection to the logic, but does not resolve the status of the other cut-elimination rules, and does not admit an obvious notion of observational equivalence. We propose a new operational semantics for CP based on the idea of observing communication, and use this semantics to define an intuitively reasonable notion of observational equivalence. To reason about observational equivalence, we use the standard relational denotational semantics of CLL. We show that this denotational semantics is adequate for our operational semantics. This allows us to deduce that, for instance, all the cut-elimination rules of CLL are observational equivalences

    Tesis por compendio[ES] Erlang es un lenguaje de programación funcional con concurrencia mediante paso de mensajes basado en el modelo de actores. Éstas y otras características lo hacen especialmente adecuado para aplicaciones distribuidas en tiempo real acrítico. En los últimos años, la popularidad de Erlang ha aumentado debido a la demanda de servicios concurrentes. No obstante, desarrollar sistemas Erlang libres de errores es un reto considerable. A pesar de que Erlang evita muchos problemas por diseño (por ejemplo, puntos muertos), algunos otros problemas pueden aparecer. En este contexto, las técnicas de testing y depuración basadas en métodos formales pueden ser útiles para detectar, localizar y arreglar errores de programación en Erlang. En esta tesis proponemos varios métodos para testing y depuración en Erlang. En particular, estos métodos están basados en modelos semánticos para concolic testing, pruebas basadas en propiedades, depuración reversible con consistencia causal y repetición reversible con consistencia causal de programas Erlang. Además, probamos formalmente las principales propiedades de nuestras propuestas y diseñamos herramientas de código abierto que implementan estos métodos.[CA] Erlang és un llenguatge de programació funcional amb concurrència mitjançant pas de missatges basat en el model d'actors. These and other features make it especially appropriate for distributed, soft real-time applications. In the recent years, Erlang's popularity has increased due to the demand for concurrent services. However, developing error-free systems in Erlang is quite a challenge. Although Erlang avoids many problems by design (e.g., deadlocks), some other problems may appear. Here, testing and debugging techniques based on formal methods may be helpful to detect, locate and fix programming errors in Erlang. In this thesis we propose several methods for testing and debugging in Erlang. In particular, these methods are based on semantics models for concolic testing, property-based testing, causal-consistent reversible debugging and causal-consistent replay debugging of Erlang programs.     Causal consistency for reversible multiparty protocols

    In programming models with a reversible semantics, computational steps can be undone. This paper addresses the integration of reversible semantics into process languages for communication-centric systems equipped with behavioral types. In prior work, we introduced a monitors-as-memories approach to seamlessly integrate reversible semantics into a process model in which concurrency is governed by session types (a class of behavioral types), covering binary (two-party) protocols with synchronous communication. The applicability and expressiveness of the binary setting, however, is limited. Here we extend our approach, and use it to define reversible semantics for an expressive process model that accounts for multiparty (n-party) protocols, asynchronous communication, decoupled rollbacks, and abstraction passing. As main result, we prove that our reversible semantics for multiparty protocols is causally-consistent. A key technical ingredient in our developments is an alternative reversible semantics with atomic rollbacks, which is conceptually simple and is shown to characterize decoupled rollbacks

Reversible computation is a new paradigm that extends the traditional forwards-only mode of computation with the ability to execute in reverse, so that computation can run backwards as easily and naturally as forwards. It aims to deliver novel computing devices and software, and to enhance existing systems by equipping them with reversibility. There are many potential applications of reversible computation, including languages and software tools for reliable and recovery-oriented distributed systems and revolutionary reversible logic gates and circuits, but they can only be realized and have lasting effect if conceptual and firm theoretical foundations are established first

    On the performance and programming of reversible molecular computers

    If the 20th century was known for the computational revolution, what will the 21st be known for? Perhaps the recent strides in the nascent fields of molecular programming and biological computation will help bring about the ‘Coming Era of Nanotechnology’ promised in Drexler’s ‘Engines of Creation’. Though there is still far to go, there is much reason for optimism. This thesis examines the underlying principles needed to realise the computational aspects of such ‘engines’ in a performant way. Its main body focusses on the ways in which thermodynamics constrains the operation and design of such systems, and it ends with the proposal of a model of computation appropriate for exploiting these constraints. These thermodynamic constraints are approached from three different directions. The first considers the maximum possible aggregate performance of a system of computers of given volume, V, with a given supply of free energy. From this perspective, reversible computing is imperative in order to circumvent the Landauer limit. A result of Frank is refined and strengthened, showing that the adiabatic regime reversible computer performance is the best possible for any computer—quantum or classical. This therefore shows a universal scaling law governing the performance of compact computers of ~V^(5/6), compared to ~V^(2/3) for conventional computers. For the case of molecular computers, it is shown how to attain this bound. The second direction extends this performance analysis to the case where individual computational particles or sub-units can interact with one another. The third extends it to interactions with shared, non-computational parts of the system. It is found that accommodating these interactions in molecular computers imposes a performance penalty that undermines the earlier scaling result. Nonetheless, scaling superior to that of irreversible computers can be preserved, and appropriate mitigations and considerations are discussed. These analyses are framed in a context of molecular computation, but where possible more general computational systems are considered. The proposed model, the א-calculus, is appropriate for programming reversible molecular computers taking into account these constraints. A variety of examples and mathematical analyses accompany it. Moreover, abstract sketches of potential molecular implementations are provided. Developing these into viable schemes suitable for experimental validation will be a focus of future work
