    Free-piston Stirling hydraulic engine and drive system for automobiles

    The calculated fuel economy for an automotive free piston Stirling hydraulic engine and drive system using a pneumatic accumulator with the fuel economy of both a conventional 1980 spark ignition engine in an X body class vehicle and the estimated fuel economy of a 1984 spark ignition vehicle system are compared. The results show that the free piston Stirling hydraulic system with a two speed transmission has a combined fuel economy nearly twice that of the 1980 spark ignition engine - 21.5 versus 10.9 km/liter (50.7 versus 25.6 mpg) under comparable conditions. The fuel economy improvement over the 1984 spark ignition engine was 81 percent. The fuel economy sensitivity of the Stirling hydraulic system to system weight, number of transmission shifts, accumulator pressure ratio and maximum pressure, auxiliary power requirements, braking energy recovery, and varying vehicle performance requirements are considered. An important finding is that a multispeed transmission is not required. The penalty for a single speed versus a two speed transmission is about a 12 percent drop in combined fuel economy to 19.0 km/liter (44.7 mpg). This is still a 60 percent improvement in combined fuel economy over the projected 1984 spark ignition vehicle

    Hybrid vehicle assessment. Phase 1: Petroleum savings analysis

    The results of a comprehensive analysis of near term electric hybrid vehicles are presented, with emphasis on their potential to save significant amounts of petroleum on a national scale in the 1990s. Performance requirements and expected annual usage patterns of these vehicles are first modeled. The projected U.S. fleet composition is estimated, and conceptual hybrid vehicle designs are conceived and analyzed for petroleum use when driven in the expected annual patterns. These petroleum consumption estimates are then compared to similar estimates for projected 1990 conventional vehicles having the same performance and driven in the same patterns. Results are presented in the form of three utility functions and comparisons of sevral conceptual designs are made. The Hybrid Vehicle (HV) design and assessment techniques are discussed and a general method is explained for selecting the optimum energy management strategy for any vehicle mission battery combination. Conclusions and recommendations are presented, and development recommendations are identified

    Measurement of performance using acceleration control and pulse control in simulated spacecraft docking operations

    Nine commercial airline pilots served as test subjects in a study to compare acceleration control with pulse control in simulated spacecraft maneuvers. Simulated remote dockings of an orbital maneuvering vehicle (OMV) to a space station were initiated from 50, 100, and 150 meters along the station's -V-bar (minus velocity vector). All unsuccessful missions were reflown. Five way mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA) with one between factor, first mode, and four within factors (mode, bloch, range, and trial) were performed on the data. Recorded performance measures included mission duration and fuel consumption along each of the three coordinate axes. Mission duration was lower with pulse mode, while delta V (fuel consumption) was lower with acceleration mode. Subjects used more fuel to travel faster with pulse mode than with acceleration mode. Mission duration, delta V, X delta V, Y delta V., and Z delta V all increased with range. Subjects commanded the OMV to 'fly' at faster rates from further distances. These higher average velocities were paid for with increased fuel consumption. Asymmetrical transfer was found in that the mode transitions could not be predicted solely from the mission duration main effect. More testing is advised to understand the manual control aspects of spaceflight maneuvers better

    ArticleFossil fuel deposits are constrained in the world. Various alternative energy sources are introduced in vehicles to limit the depletion of fossil fuel reserves and to reduce environmental pollution. One of the alternative energy sources is electricity. Th e use of electric automobiles has begun in the Baltic States too, yet accurate performance parameters of the automobiles, which could sometimes differ from the technical characteristics specified, are not always known. Road testing an electric automobile w as performed using a data logger that recorded the battery’s voltage, current, temperature and the automobile’s speed. These parameters allowed computing changes in the electric automobile’s power output under various driving regimes, e.g. acceleration or braking. Road testing the electric automobile was done under two driving regimes – urban and non - urban – on a certain route. The experiment represented a full cycle road test, with the batteries fully charged, that lasted until the batteries were discharge d to a minimum level, which was limited by the battery management system (BMS). The experiment identified the maximum current as well as the effectiveness of the regenerative braking system

    A vehicle comparison methodology based on the Otto-Engine Equivalent (OEE) vehicle concept is described. As an illustration of this methodology, the concept is used to make projections of the fuel economy potential of passenger cars using various alternative power systems. Sensitivities of OEE vehicle results to assumptions made in the calculational procedure are discussed. Factors considered include engine torque boundary, rear axle ratio, performance criteria, engine transient response, and transmission shift logic

    Fuel economy, exhaust emissions, multifuel capability, advanced materials and cost/manufacturability for both conventional and advanced alternative power systems were assessed. To insure valid comparisons of vehicles with alternative power systems, the concept of an Otto-Engine-Equivalent (OEE) vehicle was utilized. Each engine type was sized to provide equivalent vehicle performance. Sensitivity to different performance criteria was evaluated. Fuel economy projections are made for each engine type considering both the legislated emission standards and possible future emissions requirements

    Development of a powertrain control algorithm for a compound-split diesel hybrid-electric vehicle

    The goal of this research was to develop a unique powertrain control algorithm for a diesel-powered compound-split hybrid crossover utility vehicle (CUV) and evaluate the fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions benefits that can be realized compared to existing non-hybrid, gasoline-powered CUVs. This was achieved through the implementation of engine on/off functionality, regenerative braking, and electric-only drive. The research was conducted in conjunction with the university\u27s participation in EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge, an inter-collegiate advanced vehicle engineering competition focused on developing alternatively powered vehicles in the interest of providing improved fuel efficiency and reduced tailpipe emissions while maintaining useful vehicle functionality. Prior to construction, the proposed vehicle was simulated for fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions using the Powertrain System Analysis Toolkit. Initial simulation results indicated that the proposed compound-split hybrid vehicle would achieve 35 mpgge combined fuel economy and produce carbon dioxide at a rate of 242 g/mi. A 2009 Saturn Vue was modified to accept the proposed hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.3 liter diesel engine, 2-mode compound-split transaxle, and lithium-ion high-voltage battery system. This vehicle served as the platform for the development and validation of the powertrain control algorithm. Using the vehicle\u27s CAN communication capabilities, auxiliary control units were integrated to manage the new powertrain components and implement the control strategy. The project vehicle and control algorithm were validated and tested on-road for fuel efficiency and performance. The final powertrain control algorithm developed through this research included automatic engine start/stop, regenerative braking, and full-electric driving capability at speeds up to 25 mph. In its final configuration, the WVU 2-mode hybrid-electric vehicle achieved city/highway fuel economy of 24.5/31.5 mpgge. Compared to the base vehicle, the project vehicle achieved a 28.9% improvement in city fuel economy, a 21.2% improvement in highway fuel economy, and a 20% reduction of in-use CO2 emissions

    An Intelligent System-on-a-Chip for a Real-Time Assessment of Fuel Consumption to Promote Eco-Driving

    Pollution that originates from automobiles is a concern in the current world, not only because of global warming, but also due to the harmful effects on people’s health and lives. Despite regulations on exhaust gas emissions being applied, minimizing unsuitable driving habits that cause elevated fuel consumption and emissions would achieve further reductions. For that reason, this work proposes a self-organized map (SOM)-based intelligent system in order to provide drivers with eco-driving-intended driving style (DS) recommendations. The development of the DS advisor uses driving data from the Uyanik instrumented car. The system classifies drivers regarding the underlying causes of non-optimal DSs from the eco-driving viewpoint. When compared with other solutions, the main advantage of this approach is the personalization of the recommendations that are provided to motorists, comprising the handling of the pedals and the gearbox, with potential improvements in both fuel consumption and emissions ranging from the 9.5% to the 31.5%, or even higher for drivers that are strongly engaged with the system. It was successfully implemented using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) device of the Xilinx ZynQ programmable system-on-a-chip (PSoC) family.
