    Responsive task modelling

    In this paper we present a new tool for specifying task models (Responsive CTT), which can be accessed through touch-based mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets as well. The tool is Web-based and responsive in order to provide adapted user interfaces to better support the most common activities in task modelling through various types of devices. We describe the relevant aspects to take into account for this purpose and how we have addressed them in designing the tool. We also report on first user tests

    A comparative study of the energetic performance of climate adaptive facades compared to static facade design in a Mediterranean climate

    Energy-efficient design of building façades has so far predominantly been confined to static rigid forms. Recently however, attempts have been made to design environmentally responsive façades, hereby called Climate Adaptive Façades. These have the potential to better address the occupant's requirements, while also reducing energy demand. The present paper focuses on adaptable glazed façades, in a Mediterranean climate. It investigates the simulated energy performance of three types of climate-responsive façades that could be retrofitted to an existing glazed façade, in the process comparing the results to using comparable static façades solutions. Modelling dynamic façades is not an easy task and currently no single building performance simulation package appears to be capable of completely modelling the behaviour of these façades. For this reason a number of simulation packages had to be used to determine the energy demand required to achieve comfortable indoor thermal and lighting conditions. Through the results obtained, it was possible to compare energy demand of a dual-façade design approach, dynamic vs. static, thus identifying general trends. The results also highlight the fact that in order to improve over the predicted performance further studies using specialised tools capable of modelling such novel technologies are required.peer-reviewe

    Towards a Testbed for Dynamic Vehicle Routing Algorithms

    Since modern transport services are becoming more flexible, demand-responsive, and energy/cost efficient, there is a growing demand for large-scale microscopic simulation platforms in order to test sophisticated routing algorithms. Such platforms have to simulate in detail, not only the dynamically changing demand and supply of the relevant service, but also traffic flow and other relevant transport services. This paper presents the DVRP extension to the open-source MATSim simulator. The extension is designed to be highly general and customizable to simulate a wide range of dynamic rich vehicle routing problems. The extension allows plugging in of various algorithms that are responsible for continuous re-optimisation of routes in response to changes in the system. The DVRP extension has been used in many research and commercial projects dealing with simulation of electric and autonomous taxis, demand-responsive transport, personal rapid transport, free-floating car sharing and parking search

    Traffic-responsive urban network control using multivariable regulators

    The paper presents the philosophy, the aim, the development, the advantages, and the potential shortcomings of the TUC (Traffic-responsive Urban Control) strategy. Based on a store-and-forward modeling approach and using well-known methods of the Automatic Control Theory, the approach followed by TUC designs (off-line) and employs (on-line) a multivariable regulator for traffic-responsive co-ordinated network-wide signal control. Simulation investigations are used to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach. Based on the presented investigations, summarising conclusions are drawn and future work is outlined

    Infant and parental pathways to preschool cognitive competence

    In a longitudinal study, 62 parent‐child dyads were seen during the second year of life and at 4 years of age. At 12 months, measures included parental sensitive responsiveness during free play, knowledge of cognitive‐communicative development in infancy, and level of exploration and disinhibitedness of the infant. At 16 and at 20 months, parental responsiveness and directiveness and infant task mastery behaviour were assessed in constructive play. Quality of verbal guidance of the parent was assessed in a joint attention situation. At 48 months of age, the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities were administered at home, together with dyadic tasks. A path analysis revealed a model in which both verbal abilities and perceptual performance outcome measures were well predicted by the quality of parental verbal guidance in the second year. The latter measure was shown to be independent of the socioeconomic status of parents in the group, but was significantly related with knowledge of infant cognitive‐communicative development. Of the measures at the outset of the second year, only socioeconomic status remained as having a direct path at pre‐school age. The consistency of the model with other empirical findings underscores parental verbal scaffolding as an important shaper of cognitive development

    From mode choice to modal diversion: A new behavioural paradigm and an application to the study of the demand for innovative transport services

    We analyse past research efforts that focus on modal diversion in the transport sector, as opposed to the classical mode choice concept, showing the added value of this alternative framework that emerges from the existing scientific literature. The modal diversion paradigm is then used to assess the relative importance of the technical performances of transport services on one hand and of the subjective factors of its potential users on the other, when forecasting the use of a new means among a group of white-collars working in a French research institute. We quantitatively show that multimodal habits and cognitive attitudes have an importance that is in general not negligible for this group, compared to that of the transport services performances, even if only these latter are routinely considered by engineers and planners. Beyond this, we find that the role of self-related factors further increased when the group was less familiar with the technological background and the subsequent operation of the new system, such as in the case of demand responsive transport service

The interfaces to CASE tools more precisely to data dictionaries or repositories (IRDS) are examined in the context of a certain systems analysis and design methodology (e.g. SSADM)

    A promising tool to achieve more flexibility within power systems is demand re-sponse (DR). End-users in many strands of industry have been subject to research up to now regarding the opportunities for implementing DR programmes. One sector that has received little attention from the literature so far, is wastewater treatment. However, case studies indicate that the potential for wastewater treatment plants to provide DR services might be significant. This review presents and categorises recent modelling approaches for industrial demand response as well as for the wastewater treatment plant operation. Furthermore, the main sources of flexibility from wastewater treatment plants are presented: a potential for variable electricity use in aeration, the time-shifting operation of pumps, the exploitation of built-in redundan-cy in the system and flexibility in the sludge processing. Although case studies con-note the potential for DR from individual WWTPs, no study acknowledges the en-dogeneity of energy prices which arises from a large-scale utilisation of DR. There-fore, an integrated energy systems approach is required to quantify system and market effects effectively

    Using a high fidelity CCGT simulator for building prognostic systems

    Pressure to reduce maintenance costs in power utilities has resulted in growing interest in prognostic monitoring systems. Accurate prediction of the occurrence of faults and failures would result not only in improved system maintenance schedules but also in improved availability and system efficiency. The desire for such a system has driven research into the emerging field of prognostics for complex systems. At the same time there is a general move towards implementing high fidelity simulators of complex systems especially within the power generation field, with the nuclear power industry taking the lead. Whilst the simulators mainly function in a training capacity, the high fidelity of the simulations can also allow representative data to be gathered. Using simulators in this way enables systems and components to be damaged, run to failure and reset all without cost or danger to personnel as well as allowing fault scenarios to be run faster than real time. Consequently, this allows failure data to be gathered which is normally otherwise unavailable or limited, enabling analysis and research of fault progression in critical and high value systems. This paper presents a case study of utilising a high fidelity industrial Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) simulator to generate fault data, and shows how this can be employed to build a prognostic system. Advantages and disadvantages of this approach are discussed
