    Research and development of an intelligent AGV-based material handling system for industrial applications

    The use of autonomous robots in industrial applications is growing in popularity and possesses the following advantages: cost effectiveness, job efficiency and safety aspects. Despite the advantages, the major drawback to using autonomous robots is the cost involved to acquire such robots. It is the aim of GMSA to develop a low cost AGV capable of performing material handling in an industrial environment. Collective autonomous robots are often used to perform tasks, that is, more than one working together to achieve a common goal. The intelligent controller, responsible for establishing coordination between the individual robots, plays a key role in managing the tasks of each robot to achieve the common goal. This dissertation addresses the development of an AGV capable of such functionality. Key research areas include: the development of an autonomous coupling system, integration of key safety devices and the development of an intelligent control strategy that can be used to govern the operation of multiple AGVs in an area

    APPLICATIONS OF GRAPH THEORY FOR REUSE OF MODEL BASED SYSTEMS ENGINEERING DESIGN DATA

    This dissertation contributes to systems engineering (SE) by introducing and demonstrating a novel graph-based design repository (GBDR) tool. GBDR enables engineers to leverage system design information from a heterogenous set of system models created using multiple model based systems engineering (MBSE) software tools as an integrated body of knowledge. Specifically, the research provides a set of approaches that allow the use of system models described in Systems Modeling Language and Lifecycle Modeling Language as an integrated body of design information. The coalesced body of system design information serves to support concept ideation and analysis within SE. The research accomplishes this by using a graph database to store system model information imported from digital artifacts created by MBSE tools and applying principles from graph theory and semantic web technologies to identify likely connections and equivalent concepts across system models, modeling languages, and metamodels. The research demonstrates that the presented tool can import, store, synthesize, search, display, distribute, and export information from multiple MBSE tools. As a practical demonstration, feasible subsystem design alternatives for a small unmanned aircraft system government reference architecture are identified from within a set of existing system models.OSD CAPECivilian, Office of the Secretary of DefenseApproved for public release.     Continuity of object tracking

    2022 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.The demand for object tracking (OT) applications has been increasing for the past few decades in many areas of interest: security, surveillance, intelligence gathering, and reconnaissance. Lately, newly-defined requirements for unmanned vehicles have enhanced the interest in OT. Advancements in machine learning, data analytics, and deep learning have facilitated the recognition and tracking of objects of interest; however, continuous tracking is currently a problem of interest to many research projects. This dissertation presents a system implementing a means to continuously track an object and predict its trajectory based on its previous pathway, even when the object is partially or fully concealed for a period of time. The system is divided into two phases: The first phase exploits a single fixed camera system and the second phase is composed of a mesh of multiple fixed cameras. The first phase system is composed of six main subsystems: Image Processing, Detection Algorithm, Image Subtractor, Image Tracking, Tracking Predictor, and the Feedback Analyzer. The second phase of the system adds two main subsystems: Coordination Manager and Camera Controller Manager.     System Qualities Ontology, Tradespace and Affordability (SQOTA) Project – Phase 4

    This task was proposed and established as a result of a pair of 2012 workshops sponsored by the DoD Engineered Resilient Systems technology priority area and by the SERC. The workshops focused on how best to strengthen DoD’s capabilities in dealing with its systems’ non-functional requirements, often also called system qualities, properties, levels of service, and –ilities. The term –ilities was often used during the workshops, and became the title of the resulting SERC research task: “ilities Tradespace and Affordability Project (iTAP).” As the project progressed, the term “ilities” often became a source of confusion, as in “Do your results include considerations of safety, security, resilience, etc., which don’t have “ility” in their names?” Also, as our ontology, methods, processes, and tools became of interest across the DoD and across international and standards communities, we found that the term “System Qualities” was most often used.     Incorporating multi-criteria optimization and uncertainty analysis in the model-based systems engineering of an autonomous surface craft

    This thesis presents an effective methodology and tool set, that explicitly considers technological uncertainty, to enable design, development, and assessment of alternative system concept architectures for an autonomous unmanned surface vessel (USV) in a system of systems (SoS) context. Complex system designs often fail due to poor communication of customer needs and inadequate understanding of the overall problem. This frequently results in the design team missing the mark in transforming requirements into a successful conceptual design. Effective system design requires a defined, flexible, and structured context within which new technological ideas can be judged. Alternative physical architectures are then modeled, simulated, and compared to find the "best" solution for further examination. This thesis uses model-based systems engineering (MBSE) principles to develop a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) model that allows designers to perform a solution neutral investigation of possible alternative physical architecture concepts. This ensures a consistent quantitative evaluation of warfighting capability, suitability, effectiveness, technology maturation, and risk before and during a program execution.     Trading Off between Flexibility and Product Platform Constraints for Effective Technology Introduction

    Developing product platforms is an established method of reducing internal variety costs while delivering variety to customers. \ua0A critical aspect of a platform, that is expected to be used and extended for many years, is the ability to introduce new technologies and solutions effectively. Since these technological integration endeavours may challenge platform constraints, it is necessary to be able to assess the trade-off between their expected value and cost of realisation. New technologies can be integrated more easily into products derived from product platforms if they are flexible. However, introducing flexibility early can be wasteful, both in terms of resources used for the development of the platforms and the suboptimal design of products derived from the platform. In this study, a review of the existing literature is conducted and several case studies in the automotive sector are performed. Both technical and organizational factors are found to limit platform flexibility. This research supports the idea that the flexibility to integrate technology into existing platforms is a valuable property. Consequently, it is important to foster the ability to more objectively assess the value of proposed technology changes in organisations relying on product and production platforms.Finally, this thesis proposes a model-based methodology to trade off the flexibility of a product platform with the lifetime value it can deliver to its stakeholders. The methodology utilizes technology roadmaps, architectural modelling, value-driven design, and model-based simulations to establish the bandwidth of a product platform. As such, the constraints that the platform introduces for future derived products are balanced against valuable flexibility, which is defined as the flexibility of the platform to allow for more alternative designs, including using new technologies, of higher value in future products. The findings of this thesis have implications for the research of product platforms and their development, as well as for practitioners making decisions about product platforms with consideration to the uncertainty around the ways they will be used and upgraded in the future
