Remote Tracking via Encoded Information for Nonlinear Systems
The problem addressed in this paper is to control a plant so as to have its
output tracking (a family of) reference commands generated at a remote location
and transmitted through a communication channel of finite capacity. The
uncertainty due to the presence of the communication channel is counteracted by
a suitable choice of the parameters of the regulator
Analyzing helicopter evasive maneuver effectiveness against rocket-propelled grenades
It has long been acknowledged that military helicopters are vulnerable to ground-launched threats, in particular, the RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenade. Current helicopter threat mitigation strategies rely on a combination of operational tactics and selectively placed armor plating, which can help to mitigate but not entirely remove the threat. However, in recent years, a number of active protection systems designed to protect land-based vehicles from rocket and missile fire have been developed. These systems all use a sensor suite to detect, track, and predict the threat trajectory, which is then employed in the computation of an intercept trajectory for a defensive kill mechanism. Although a complete active protection system in its current form is unsuitable for helicopters, in this paper, it is assumed that the active protection system’s track and threat trajectory prediction subsystem could be used offline as a tool to develop tactics and techniques to counter the threat from rocket-propelled grenade attacks. It is further proposed that such a maneuver can be found by solving a pursuit–evasion differential game. Because the first stage in solving this problem is developing the capability to evaluate the game, nonlinear dynamic and spatial models for a helicopter, RPG-7 round, and gunner, and evasion strategies were developed and integrated into a new simulation engine. Analysis of the results from representative vignettes demonstrates that the simulation yields the value of the engagement pursuit–evasion game. It is also shown that, in the majority of cases, survivability can be significantly improved by performing an appropriate evasive maneuver. Consequently, this simulation may be used as an important tool for both designing and evaluating evasive tactics and is the first step in designing a maneuver-based active protection system, leading to improved rotorcraft survivability
Tracking-Optimized Quantization for H.264 Compression in Transportation Video Surveillance Applications
We propose a tracking-aware system that removes video components of low tracking interest and optimizes the quantization during compression of frequency coefficients, particularly those that most influence trackers, significantly reducing bitrate while maintaining comparable tracking accuracy. We utilize tracking accuracy as our compression criterion in lieu of mean squared error metrics. The process of optimizing quantization tables suitable for automated tracking can be executed online or offline. The online implementation initializes the encoding procedure for a specific scene, but introduces delay. On the other hand, the offline procedure produces globally optimum quantization tables where the optimization occurs for a collection of video sequences. Our proposed system is designed with low processing power and memory requirements in mind, and as such can be deployed on remote nodes. Using H.264/AVC video coding and a commonly used state-of-the-art tracker we show that while maintaining comparable tracking accuracy our system allows for over 50% bitrate savings on top of existing savings from previous work
Advances in Quantum Teleportation
Quantum teleportation is one of the most important protocols in quantum
information. By exploiting the physical resource of entanglement, quantum
teleportation serves as a key primitive in a variety of quantum information
tasks and represents an important building block for quantum technologies, with
a pivotal role in the continuing progress of quantum communication, quantum
computing and quantum networks. Here we review the basic theoretical ideas
behind quantum teleportation and its variant protocols. We focus on the main
experiments, together with the technical advantages and disadvantages
associated with the use of the various technologies, from photonic qubits and
optical modes to atomic ensembles, trapped atoms, and solid-state systems.
Analysing the current state-of-the-art, we finish by discussing open issues,
challenges and potential future implementations.Comment: Nature Photonics Review. Comments are welcome. This is a

Customized television: Standards compliant advanced digital television
This correspondence describes a European Union supported collaborative project called CustomTV based on the premise that future TV sets will provide all sorts of multimedia information and interactivity, as well as manage all such services according to each user’s or group of user’s preferences/profiles. We have demonstrated the potential of recent standards (MPEG-4 and MPEG-7) to implement such a scenario by building
the following services: an advanced EPG, Weather Forecasting, and Stock Exchange/Flight Information
Classically entangled optical beams for high-speed kinematic sensing
Tracking the kinematics of fast-moving objects is an important diagnostic
tool for science and engineering. Existing optical methods include high-speed
CCD/CMOS imaging, streak cameras, lidar, serial time-encoded imaging and
sequentially timed all-optical mapping. Here, we demonstrate an entirely new
approach to positional and directional sensing based on the concept of
classical entanglement in vector beams of light. The measurement principle
relies on the intrinsic correlations existing in such beams between transverse
spatial modes and polarization. The latter can be determined from intensity
measurements with only a few fast photodiodes, greatly outperforming the
bandwidth of current CCD/CMOS devices. In this way, our setup enables
two-dimensional real-time sensing with temporal resolution in the GHz range. We
expect the concept to open up new directions in photonics-based metrology and
sensing.Comment: v2 includes the real-time measurement from the published version.
