Clique-Relaxed Graph Coloring
We define a generalization of the chromatic number of a graph G called the k-clique-relaxed chromatic number, denoted χ(k)(G). We prove bounds on χ(k)(G) for all graphs G, including corollaries for outerplanar and planar graphs. We also define the k-clique-relaxed game chromatic number, χg(k)(G), of a graph G. We prove χg(2)(G)≤ 4 for all outerplanar graphs G, and give an example of an outerplanar graph H with χg(2)(H) ≥ 3. Finally, we prove that if H is a member of a particular subclass of outerplanar graphs, then χg(2)(H) ≤ 3
Digraph Coloring Games and Game-Perfectness
In this thesis the game chromatic number of a digraph is introduced as a game-theoretic variant of the dichromatic number. This notion generalizes the well-known game chromatic number of a graph. An extended model also takes into account relaxed colorings and asymmetric move sequences. Game-perfectness is defined as a game-theoretic variant of perfectness of a graph, and is generalized to digraphs. We examine upper and lower bounds for the game chromatic number of several classes of digraphs. In the last part of the thesis, we characterize game-perfect digraphs with small clique number, and prove general results concerning game-perfectness. Some results are verified with the help of a computer program that is discussed in the appendix
Defective and Clustered Graph Colouring
Consider the following two ways to colour the vertices of a graph where the
requirement that adjacent vertices get distinct colours is relaxed. A colouring
has "defect" if each monochromatic component has maximum degree at most
. A colouring has "clustering" if each monochromatic component has at
most vertices. This paper surveys research on these types of colourings,
where the first priority is to minimise the number of colours, with small
defect or small clustering as a secondary goal. List colouring variants are
also considered. The following graph classes are studied: outerplanar graphs,
planar graphs, graphs embeddable in surfaces, graphs with given maximum degree,
graphs with given maximum average degree, graphs excluding a given subgraph,
graphs with linear crossing number, linklessly or knotlessly embeddable graphs,
graphs with given Colin de Verdi\`ere parameter, graphs with given
circumference, graphs excluding a fixed graph as an immersion, graphs with
given thickness, graphs with given stack- or queue-number, graphs excluding
as a minor, graphs excluding as a minor, and graphs excluding
an arbitrary graph as a minor. Several open problems are discussed.Comment: This is a preliminary version of a dynamic survey to be published in

Refined activation strategy for the marking game
AbstractThis paper introduces a new strategy for playing the marking game on graphs. Using this strategy, we prove that if G is a planar graph, then the game colouring number of G, and hence the game chromatic number of G, is at most 17
Graph coloring with no large monochromatic components
For a graph G and an integer t we let mcc_t(G) be the smallest m such that
there exists a coloring of the vertices of G by t colors with no monochromatic
connected subgraph having more than m vertices. Let F be any nontrivial
minor-closed family of graphs. We show that \mcc_2(G) = O(n^{2/3}) for any
n-vertex graph G \in F. This bound is asymptotically optimal and it is attained
for planar graphs. More generally, for every such F and every fixed t we show
that mcc_t(G)=O(n^{2/(t+1)}). On the other hand we have examples of graphs G
with no K_{t+3} minor and with mcc_t(G)=\Omega(n^{2/(2t-1)}).
It is also interesting to consider graphs of bounded degrees. Haxell, Szabo,
and Tardos proved \mcc_2(G) \leq 20000 for every graph G of maximum degree 5.
We show that there are n-vertex 7-regular graphs G with \mcc_2(G)=\Omega(n),
and more sharply, for every \epsilon>0 there exists c_\epsilon>0 and n-vertex
graphs of maximum degree 7, average degree at most 6+\epsilon for all
subgraphs, and with mcc_2(G)\ge c_\eps n. For 6-regular graphs it is known only
that the maximum order of magnitude of \mcc_2 is between \sqrt n and n.
We also offer a Ramsey-theoretic perspective of the quantity \mcc_t(G).Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure

Graph Theory
Graph theory is a rapidly developing area of mathematics. Recent years have seen the development of deep theories, and the increasing importance of methods from other parts of mathematics. The workshop on Graph Theory brought together together a broad range of researchers to discuss some of the major new developments. There were three central themes, each of which has seen striking recent progress: the structure of graphs with forbidden subgraphs; graph minor theory; and applications of the entropy compression method. The workshop featured major talks on current work in these areas, as well as presentations of recent breakthroughs and connections to other areas. There was a particularly exciting selection of longer talks, including presentations on the structure of graphs with forbidden induced subgraphs, embedding simply connected 2-complexes in 3-space, and an announcement of the solution of the well-known Oberwolfach Problem
