Analysis of Distributed Systems Dynamics with Erlang Performance Lab
Modern, highly concurrent and large-scale systems require new methods for design, testing and monitoring. Their dynamics and scale require real-time tools, providing a holistic view of the whole system and the ability of showing a more detailed view when needed. Such tools can help identifying the causes of unwanted states, which is hardly possible with static analysis or metrics-based approach. In this paper a new tool for analysis of distributed systems in Erlang is presented. It provides real-time monitoring of system dynamics on different levels of abstraction. The tool has been used for analyzing a large-scale urban traffic simulation system running on a cluster of 20 computing nodes
CERN Storage Systems for Large-Scale Wireless
The project aims at evaluating the use of CERN computing infrastructure for next generation sensor networks data analysis. The proposed system allows the simulation of a large-scale sensor array for traffic analysis, streaming data to CERN storage systems in an efficient way. The data are made available for offline and quasi-online analysis, enabling both long term planning and fast reaction on the environment
Investigating the Efficiency of ITS Cooperative Systems for a Better Use of Urban Transport Infrastructures: The iTETRIS Simulation Platform
The use of cooperative ITS communication systems,
supporting driving through the dynamic exchange of Vehicle-to-
Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) messages, is a
potential candidate to improve the economical and societal
welfare. The application of such systems for novel cooperative
traffic management strategies can introduce a lot of beneficial
effects not only for road safety, but also for the economy related
to transportation systems and the environmental impact. Despite
this apparent set of promising features, City Road Authorities,
which hold a key-role in determining the final adoption of such
systems, still look at cooperative systems without sharing a clear
opinion. This is mainly due to the current lack of definitive and
solid evidences of the effectiveness of such systems when applied
in the real world. In order to fill this gap and let Road
Authorities estimate the usefulness of such technologies in
achieving the objectives dictated by cities’ traffic management
policies, the EU consortium iTETRIS is developing a simulation
platform for large scale testing of traffic management solutions
making use of cooperative ITS systems. Thanks to its own
distinguishing features, iTETRIS aims at becoming a good
supporting tool for Road Authorities to implement preliminary
tests on the effectiveness of ITS solutions prior to investing
money for the physical deployment of the communication

Assessing and augmenting SCADA cyber security: a survey of techniques
SCADA systems monitor and control critical infrastructures of national importance such as power generation and distribution, water supply, transportation networks, and manufacturing facilities. The pervasiveness, miniaturisations and declining costs of internet connectivity have transformed these systems from strictly isolated to highly interconnected networks. The connectivity provides immense benefits such as reliability, scalability and remote connectivity, but at the same time exposes an otherwise isolated and secure system, to global cyber security threats. This inevitable transformation to highly connected systems thus necessitates effective security safeguards to be in place as any compromise or downtime of SCADA systems can have severe economic, safety and security ramifications. One way to ensure vital asset protection is to adopt a viewpoint similar to an attacker to determine weaknesses and loopholes in defences. Such mind sets help to identify and fix potential breaches before their exploitation. This paper surveys tools and techniques to uncover SCADA system vulnerabilities. A comprehensive review of the selected approaches is provided along with their applicability
Fine-grained traffic state estimation and visualisation
Tools for visualising the current traffic state are used by local authorities for strategic monitoring of the traffic network and by everyday users for planning their journey. Popular visualisations include those provided by Google Maps and by Inrix. Both employ a traffic lights colour-coding system, where roads on a map are coloured green if traffic is flowing normally and red or black if there is congestion. New sensor technology, especially from wireless sources, is allowing resolution down to lane level. A case study is reported in which a traffic micro-simulation test bed is used to generate high-resolution estimates. An interactive visualisation of the fine-grained traffic state is presented. The visualisation is demonstrated using Google Earth and affords the user a detailed three-dimensional view of the traffic state down to lane level in real time
Using the general link transmission model in a dynamic traffic assignment to simulate congestion on urban networks
This article presents two new models of Dynamic User Equilibrium that are particularly suited for ITS applications, where the evolution of vehicle flows and travel times must be simulated on large road networks, possibly in real-time. The key feature of the proposed models is the detail representation of the main congestion phenomena occurring at nodes of urban networks, such as vehicle queues and their spillback, as well as flow conflicts in mergins and diversions. Compared to the simple word of static assignment, where only the congestion along the arc is typically reproduced through a separable relation between vehicle flow and travel time, this type of DTA models are much more complex, as the above relation becomes non-separable, both in time and space.
Traffic simulation is here attained through a macroscopic flow model, that extends the theory of kinematic waves to urban networks and non-linear fundamental diagrams: the General Link Transmission Model. The sub-models of the GLTM, namely the Node Intersection Model, the Forward Propagation Model of vehicles and the Backward Propagation Model of spaces, can be combined in two different ways to produce arc travel times starting from turn flows. The first approach is to consider short time intervals of a few seconds and process all nodes for each temporal layer in chronological order. The second approach allows to consider long time intervals of a few minutes and for each sub-model requires to process the whole temporal profile of involved variables. The two resulting DTA models are here analyzed and compared with the aim of identifying their possible use cases.
A rigorous mathematical formulation is out of the scope of this paper, as well as a detailed explanation of the solution algorithm.
The dynamic equilibrium is anyhow sought through a new method based on Gradient Projection, which is capable to solve both proposed models with any desired precision in a reasonable number of iterations. Its fast convergence is essential to show that the two proposed models for network congestion actually converge at equilibrium to nearly identical solutions in terms of arc flows and travel times, despite their two diametrical approaches wrt the dynamic nature of the problem, as shown in the numerical tests presented here
iTETRIS: An Integrated Wireless and Traffic Platform for Real-Time Road Traffic Management Solutions
Wireless vehicular cooperative systems have been identified as an attractive solution to improve road traffic management, thereby contributing to the European goal of safer, cleaner, and more efficient and sustainable traffic solutions. V2V-V2I communication technologies can improve traffic management through real-time exchange of data among vehicles and with road infrastructure. It is also of great importance to investigate the adequate combination of V2V and V2I technologies to ensure the continuous and costefficient operation of traffic management solutions based on wireless vehicular cooperative solutions. However, to adequately design and optimize these communication protocols and analyze the potential of wireless vehicular cooperative systems to improve road traffic management, adequate testbeds and field operational tests need to be conducted.
Despite the potential of Field Operational Tests to get the first insights into the benefits and problems faced in the development of wireless vehicular cooperative systems, there is yet the need to evaluate in the long term and large dimension the true potential benefits of wireless vehicular cooperative systems to improve traffic efficiency.
