    Overview of Advanced LIGO Adaptive Optics

    This is an overview of the adaptive optics used in Advanced LIGO (aLIGO), known as the thermal compensation system (TCS). The thermal compensation system was designed to minimize thermally-induced spatial distortions in the interferometer optical modes and to provide some correction for static curvature errors in the core optics of aLIGO. The TCS is comprised of ring heater actuators, spatially tunable CO2_{2} laser projectors and Hartmann wavefront sensors. The system meets the requirements of correcting for nominal distortion in Advanced LIGO to a maximum residual error of 5.4nm, weighted across the laser beam, for up to 125W of laser input power into the interferometer

    Gemini multi-conjugate adaptive optics system review II: Commissioning, operation and overall performance

    The Gemini Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics System - GeMS, a facility instrument mounted on the Gemini South telescope, delivers a uniform, near diffraction limited images at near infrared wavelengths (0.95 microns- 2.5 microns) over a field of view of 120 arc seconds. GeMS is the first sodium layer based multi laser guide star adaptive optics system used in astronomy. It uses five laser guide stars distributed on a 60 arc seconds square constellation to measure for atmospheric distortions and two deformable mirrors to compensate for it. In this paper, the second devoted to describe the GeMS project, we present the commissioning, overall performance and operational scheme of GeMS. Performance of each sub-system is derived from the commissioning results. The typical image quality, expressed in full with half maximum, Strehl ratios and variations over the field delivered by the system are then described. A discussion of the main contributor to performance limitation is carried-out.     Precision pointing compensation for DSN antennas with optical distance measuring sensors

    The pointing control loops of Deep Space Network (DSN) antennas do not account for unmodeled deflections of the primary and secondary reflectors. As a result, structural distortions due to unpredictable environmental loads can result in uncompensated boresight shifts which degrade pointing accuracy. The design proposed here can provide real-time bias commands to the pointing control system to compensate for environmental effects on pointing performance. The bias commands can be computed in real time from optically measured deflections at a number of points on the primary and secondary reflectors. Computer simulations with a reduced-order finite-element model of a DSN antenna validate the concept and lead to a proposed design by which a ten-to-one reduction in pointing uncertainty can be achieved under nominal uncertainty conditions

    Compensating for pneumatic distortion in pressure sensing devices

    A technique of compensating for pneumatic distortion in pressure sensing devices was developed and verified. This compensation allows conventional pressure sensing technology to obtain improved unsteady pressure measurements. Pressure distortion caused by frictional attenuation and pneumatic resonance within the sensing system makes obtaining unsteady pressure measurements by conventional sensors difficult. Most distortion occurs within the pneumatic tubing which transmits pressure impulses from the aircraft's surface to the measurement transducer. To avoid pneumatic distortion, experiment designers mount the pressure sensor at the surface of the aircraft, (called in-situ mounting). In-situ transducers cannot always fit in the available space and sometimes pneumatic tubing must be run from the aircraft's surface to the pressure transducer. A technique to measure unsteady pressure data using conventional pressure sensing technology was developed. A pneumatic distortion model is reduced to a low-order, state-variable model retaining most of the dynamic characteristics of the full model. The reduced-order model is coupled with results from minimum variance estimation theory to develop an algorithm to compensate for the effects of pneumatic distortion. Both postflight and real-time algorithms are developed and evaluated using simulated and flight data

    Dynamic calibration of current-steering DAC

    The demand for high-speed communication systems has dramatically increased during the last decades. Working as an interface between the digital and analog world, Digital-to-Analog converters (DACs) are becoming more and more important because they are a key part which limits the accuracy and speed of an overall system. Consequently, the requirements for high-speed and high-accuracy DACs are increasingly demanding. It is well recognized that dynamic performance of the DACs degrades dramatically with increasing input signal frequencies and update rates. The dynamic performance is often characterized by the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR). The SFDR is determined by the spectral harmonics, which are attributable to system nonlinearities.;A new calibration approach is presented in this thesis that compensates for the dynamic errors in performance. In this approach, the nonlinear components of the input dependent and previous input code dependent errors are characterized, and correction codes that can be used to calibrate the DAC for these nonlinearities are stored in a two-dimensional error look-up table. A series of pulses is generated at run time by addressing the error look-up table with the most significant bits of the Boolean input and by using the corresponding output to drive a calibration DAC whose output is summed with the original DAC output. The approach is applied at both the behavioral level and the circuit level in current-steering DAC.;The validity of this approach is verified by simulation. These simulations show that the dynamic nonlinearities can be dramatically reduced with this calibration scheme. The simulation results also show that this calibration approach is robust to errors in both the width and height of calibration pulses.;Experimental measurement results are also provided for a special case of this dynamic calibration algorithm that show that the dynamic performance can be improved through dynamic calibration, provided the mean error values in the table are close to their real values

    700mV low power low noise implantable neural recording system design

    This dissertation presents the work for design and implementation of a low power, low noise neural recording system consisting of Bandpass Amplifier and Pipelined Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) for recording neural signal activities. A low power, low noise two stage neural amplifier for use in an intelligent Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) based on folded cascode Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA) is utilized to amplify the neural signals. The optimization of the number of amplifier stages is discussed to achieve the minimum power and area consumption. The amplifier power supply is 0.7V. The midband gain of amplifier is 58.4dB with a 3dB bandwidth from 0.71 to 8.26 kHz. Measured input-referred noise and total power consumption are 20.7 μVrms and 1.90 μW respectively. The measured result shows that the optimizing the number of stages can achieve lower power consumption and demonstrates the neural amplifier's suitability for instu neutral activity recording. The advantage of power consumption of Pipelined ADC over Successive Approximation Register (SAR) ADC and Delta-Sigma ADC is discussed. An 8 bit fully differential (FD) Pipeline ADC for use in a smart RFID is presented in this dissertation. The Multiplying Digital to Analog Converter (MDAC) utilizes a novel offset cancellation technique robust to device leakage to reduce the input drift voltage. Simulation results of static and dynamic performance show this low power Pipeline ADC is suitable for multi-channel neural recording applications. The performance of all proposed building blocks is verified through test chips fabricated in IBM 180nm CMOS process. Both bench-top and real animal test results demonstrate the system's capability of recording neural signals for neural spike detection

    High Power and Optomechanics in Advanced LIGO Detectors

    In September 2015, a new era of astronomy began with the first direct detection of grav- itational waves from a binary black hole coalescence. The event was captured by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, comprised of two long-baseline interferometers, one in Livingston, LA and one in Hanford, WA. At the time of the first detection, the interferometers were part way through an upgrade to an advanced configuration and were operating with a strain sensitivity of just better than 10−23/Hz1/2 around 100Hz. The full Advanced LIGO design calls for sensitivity of a few parts in 10−24/Hz1/2. This thesis covers the detector upgrade to double the input power, thereby reducing quantum shot noise, which currently limits LIGO strain sensitivity above 100Hz. First, it presents the design of the interferometer and the noises – fundamental, technical, and environmental – which contribute to the full sensitivity curve, motivating the need for high power. The details of the high power laser upgrade are discussed. Second, it presents select side effects of high power, which can result in overall losses and heighten specific classical noise couplings. The work particularly focuses on a three-mode opto-mechanical interaction that can become unstable at high power, threatening the operational ability of the detector; multiple successful mitigation technique are presented and compared. The results of this work, combined with the collaborative work of many others, allow the Advanced LIGO detectors to achieve a strain sensitivity better than 5 × 10−24/Hz1/2 during the third observation run

    Astrometric performance of the Gemini multi-conjugate adaptive optics system in crowded fields

    The Gemini Multi-conjugate adaptive optics System (GeMS) is a facility instrument for the Gemini-South telescope. It delivers uniform, near-diffraction-limited image quality at near-infrared wavelengths over a 2 arcminute field of view. Together with the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI), a near-infrared wide field camera, GeMS/GSAOI's combination of high spatial resolution and a large field of view will make it a premier facility for precision astrometry. Potential astrometric science cases cover a broad range of topics including exo-planets, star formation, stellar evolution, star clusters, nearby galaxies, black holes and neutron stars, and the Galactic center. In this paper, we assess the astrometric performance and limitations of GeMS/GSAOI. In particular, we analyze deep, mono-epoch images, multi-epoch data and distortion calibration. We find that for single-epoch, un-dithered data, an astrometric error below 0.2 mas can be achieved for exposure times exceeding one minute, provided enough stars are available to remove high-order distortions. We show however that such performance is not reproducible for multi-epoch observations, and an additional systematic error of ~0.4 mas is evidenced. This systematic multi-epoch error is the dominant error term in the GeMS/GSAOI astrometric error budget, and it is thought to be due to time-variable distortion induced by gravity flexure.Comment: 16 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Architecture of a network-in-the-Loop environment for characterizing AC power system behavior

    This paper describes the method by which a large hardware-in-the-loop environment has been realized for three-phase ac power systems. The environment allows an entire laboratory power-network topology (generators, loads, controls, protection devices, and switches) to be placed in the loop of a large power-network simulation. The system is realized by using a realtime power-network simulator, which interacts with the hardware via the indirect control of a large synchronous generator and by measuring currents flowing from its terminals. These measured currents are injected into the simulation via current sources to close the loop. This paper describes the system architecture and, most importantly, the calibration methodologies which have been developed to overcome measurement and loop latencies. In particular, a new "phase advance" calibration removes the requirement to add unwanted components into the simulated network to compensate for loop delay. The results of early commissioning experiments are demonstrated. The present system performance limits under transient conditions (approximately 0.25 Hz/s and 30 V/s to contain peak phase-and voltage-tracking errors within 5. and 1%) are defined mainly by the controllability of the synchronous generator
