    Rejection-Cascade of Gaussians: Real-time adaptive background subtraction framework

    Background-Foreground classification is a well-studied problem in computer vision. Due to the pixel-wise nature of modeling and processing in the algorithm, it is usually difficult to satisfy real-time constraints. There is a trade-off between the speed (because of model complexity) and accuracy. Inspired by the rejection cascade of Viola-Jones classifier, we decompose the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) into an adaptive cascade of Gaussians(CoG). We achieve a good improvement in speed without compromising the accuracy with respect to the baseline GMM model. We demonstrate a speed-up factor of 4-5x and 17 percent average improvement in accuracy over Wallflowers surveillance datasets. The CoG is then demonstrated to over the latent space representation of images of a convolutional variational autoencoder(VAE).     Single camera pose estimation using Bayesian filtering and Kinect motion priors

    Traditional approaches to upper body pose estimation using monocular vision rely on complex body models and a large variety of geometric constraints. We argue that this is not ideal and somewhat inelegant as it results in large processing burdens, and instead attempt to incorporate these constraints through priors obtained directly from training data. A prior distribution covering the probability of a human pose occurring is used to incorporate likely human poses. This distribution is obtained offline, by fitting a Gaussian mixture model to a large dataset of recorded human body poses, tracked using a Kinect sensor. We combine this prior information with a random walk transition model to obtain an upper body model, suitable for use within a recursive Bayesian filtering framework. Our model can be viewed as a mixture of discrete Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, in that states behave as random walks, but drift towards a set of typically observed poses. This model is combined with measurements of the human head and hand positions, using recursive Bayesian estimation to incorporate temporal information. Measurements are obtained using face detection and a simple skin colour hand detector, trained using the detected face. The suggested model is designed with analytical tractability in mind and we show that the pose tracking can be Rao-Blackwellised using the mixture Kalman filter, allowing for computational efficiency while still incorporating bio-mechanical properties of the upper body. In addition, the use of the proposed upper body model allows reliable three-dimensional pose estimates to be obtained indirectly for a number of joints that are often difficult to detect using traditional object recognition strategies.     Real-time, long-term hand tracking with unsupervised initialization

    This paper proposes a complete tracking system that is capable of long-term, real-time hand tracking with unsupervised initialization and error recovery. Initialization is steered by a three-stage hand detector, combining spatial and temporal information. Hand hypotheses are generated by a random forest detector in the first stage, whereas a simple linear classifier eliminates false positive detections. Resulting detections are tracked by particle filters that gather temporal statistics in order to make a final decision. The detector is scale and rotation invariant, and can detect hands in any pose in unconstrained environments. The resulting discriminative confidence map is combined with a generative particle filter based observation model to enable robust, long-term hand tracking in real-time. The proposed solution is evaluated using several challenging, publicly available datasets, and is shown to clearly outperform other state of the art object tracking methods

    Vehicle Classification For Automatic Traffic Density Estimation

    Automatic traffic light control at intersection has recently become one of the most active research areas related to the development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Due to the massive growth in urbanization and traffic congestion, intelligent vision based traffic light controller is needed to reduce the traffi c delay and travel time especially in developing countries as the current automatic time based control is not realistic while sensor-based tra ffic light controller is not reliable in developing countries. Vision based traffi c light controller depends mainly on traffic congestion estimation at cross roads, because the main road junctions of a city are these roads where most of the road-beds are lost. Most of the previous studies related to this topic do not take unattended vehicles into consideration when estimating the tra ffic density or traffi c flow. In this study we would like to improve the performance of vision based traffi c light control by detecting stationary and unattended vehicles to give them higher weights, using image processing and pattern recognition techniques for much e ffective and e ffecient tra ffic congestion estimation

    Investigating the latency cost of statistical learning of a Gaussian mixture simulating on a convolutional density network with adaptive batch size technique for background modeling

    Background modeling is a promising field of study in video analysis, with a wide range of applications in video surveillance. Deep neural networks have proliferated in recent years as a result of effective learning-based approaches to motion analysis. However, these strategies only provide a partial description of the observed scenes' insufficient properties since they use a single-valued mapping to estimate the target background's temporal conditional averages. On the other hand, statistical learning in the imagery domain has become one of the most widely used approaches due to its high adaptability to dynamic context transformation, especially Gaussian Mixture Models. Specifically, these probabilistic models aim to adjust latent parameters to gain high expectation of realistically observed data; however, this approach only concentrates on contextual dynamics in short-term analysis. In a prolonged investigation, it is challenging so that statistical methods cannot reserve the generalization of long-term variation of image data. Balancing the trade-off between traditional machine learning models and deep neural networks requires an integrated approach to ensure accuracy in conception while maintaining a high speed of execution. In this research, we present a novel two-stage approach for detecting changes using two convolutional neural networks in this work. The first architecture is based on unsupervised Gaussian mixtures statistical learning, which is used to classify the salient features of scenes. The second one implements a light-weighted pipeline of foreground detection. Our two-stage system has a total of approximately 3.5K parameters but still converges quickly to complex motion patterns. Our experiments on publicly accessible datasets demonstrate that our proposed networks are not only capable of generalizing regions of moving objects with promising results in unseen scenarios, but also competitive in terms of performance quality and effectiveness foreground segmentation.     Object Tracking: Appearance Modeling And Feature Learning

    Object tracking in real scenes is an important problem in computer vision due to increasing usage of tracking systems day in and day out in various applications such as surveillance, security, monitoring and robotic vision. Object tracking is the process of locating objects of interest in every frame of video frames. Many systems have been proposed to address the tracking problem where the major challenges come from handling appearance variation during tracking caused by changing scale, pose, rotation, illumination and occlusion. In this dissertation, we address these challenges by introducing several novel tracking techniques. First, we developed a multiple object tracking system that deals specially with occlusion issues. The system depends on our improved KLT tracker for accurate and robust tracking during partial occlusion. In full occlusion, we applied a Kalman filter to predict the object\u27s new location and connect the trajectory parts. Many tracking methods depend on a rectangle or an ellipse mask to segment and track objects. Typically, using a larger or smaller mask will lead to loss of tracked objects. Second, we present an object tracking system (SegTrack) that deals with partial and full occlusions by employing improved segmentation methods: mixture of Gaussians and a silhouette segmentation algorithm. For re-identification, one or more feature vectors for each tracked object are used after target reappearing. Third, we propose a novel Bayesian Hierarchical Appearance Model (BHAM) for robust object tracking. Our idea is to model the appearance of a target as combination of multiple appearance models, each covering the target appearance changes under a certain situation (e.g. view angle). In addition, we built an object tracking system by integrating BHAM with background subtraction and the KLT tracker for static camera videos. For moving camera videos, we applied BHAM to cluster negative and positive target instances. As tracking accuracy depends mainly on finding good discriminative features to estimate the target location, finally, we propose to learn good features for generic object tracking using online convolutional neural networks (OCNN). In order to learn discriminative and stable features for tracking, we propose a novel object function to train OCNN by penalizing the feature variations in consecutive frames, and the tracker is built by integrating OCNN with a color-based multi-appearance model. Our experimental results on real-world videos show that our tracking systems have superior performance when compared with several state-of-the-art trackers.     This paper presents a neuroscience inspired information theoretic approach to motion segmentation. Robust motion segmentation represents a fundamental first stage in many surveillance tasks. As an alternative to widely adopted individual segmentation approaches, which are challenged in different ways by imagery exhibiting a wide range of environmental variation and irrelevant motion, this paper presents a new biologically-inspired approach which computes the multivariate mutual information between multiple complementary motion segmentation outputs.     Vision-Based Production of Personalized Video

    In this paper we present a novel vision-based system for the automated production of personalised video souvenirs for visitors in leisure and cultural heritage venues. Visitors are visually identified and tracked through a camera network. The system produces a personalized DVD souvenir at the end of a visitor’s stay allowing visitors to relive their experiences. We analyze how we identify visitors by fusing facial and body features, how we track visitors, how the tracker recovers from failures due to occlusions, as well as how we annotate and compile the final product. Our experiments demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach

    Adaptive Kernel Density Approximation and Its Applications to Real-Time Computer Vision

    Density-based modeling of visual features is very common in computer vision research due to the uncertainty of observed data; so accurate and simple density representation is essential to improve the quality of overall systems. Even though various methods, either parametric or non-parametric, are proposed for density modeling, there is a significant trade-off between flexibility and computational complexity. Therefore, a new compact and flexible density representation is necessary, and the dissertation provides a solution to alleviate the problems as follows. First, we describe a compact and flexible representation of probability density functions using a mixture of Gaussians which is called Kernel Density Approximation (KDA). In this framework, the number of Gaussians components as well as the weight, mean, and covariance of each Gaussian component are determined automatically by mean-shift mode-finding procedure and curvature fitting. An original density function estimated by kernel density estimation is simplified into a compact mixture of Gaussians by the proposed method; memory requirements are dramatically reduced while incurring only a small amount of error. In order to adapt to variations of visual features, sequential kernel density approximation is proposed in which a sequential update of the density function is performed in linear time. Second, kernel density approximation is incorporated into a Bayesian filtering framework, and we design a Kernel-based Bayesian Filter (KBF). Particle filters have inherent limitations such as degeneracy or loss of diversity which are mainly caused by sampling from discrete proposal distribution. In kernel-based Bayesian filtering, every relevant probability density function is continuous and the posterior is simplified by kernel density approximation so as to propagate a compact form of the density function from step to step. Since the proposal distribution is continuous in this framework, the problems in conventional particle filters are alleviated. The sequential kernel density approximation technique is naturally applied to background modeling, and target appearance modeling for object tracking. Also, the kernel-based Bayesian filtering framework is applied to object tracking, which shows improved performance with a smaller number of samples.
