    Benchmarking for syntax-based sentential inference

    Get PDF
International audienceWe propose a methodology for investigat- ing how well NLP systems handle mean- ing preserving syntactic variations. We start by presenting a method for the semi automated creation of a benchmark where entailment is mediated solely by meaning preserving syntactic variations. We then use this benchmark to compare a seman- tic role labeller and two grammar based RTE systems. We argue that the proposed methodology (i) supports a modular eval- uation of the ability of NLP systems to handle the syntax/semantic interface and (ii) permits focused error mining and er- ror analysis

To accomplish such an aim, our critical approach includes the support of Freudian concepts, complemented by further studies of his analysts and reviewers, as well as Eliade's and Cassirer's views on myth, since they all provide the necessary, theoretical basis for the study of the realms of death in the plays. In the Introduction, the aim of this thesis is established and justified. Part Two - The Family Realm - introduces an analysis of the family microcosm, structured according to hierarchical models, that enforces internal tension and discloses a passionate world of relationships in which guilt and the ambivalence of feelings point out the characters' path of denials. Part Three - The Social Realm - enlarges the perspective of the characters' self-destructive posture by introducing specific environmental and cultural aspects pertinent to each play; they lead to the recognition of the cult of chastity and its major role which adds on to the characters' drive towards death. Part Four - The Mythical Realm - further amplifies the scope of such a death wish; it is seen as a projection of a mythical consciousness in which the search for unattainable chastity as related to perfectionism gives structure to such a mythical universe generated within the reality of the plays. The final outcome reveals that the individual, familial, social, cultural and mythical realities of the plays embody traits which indicate the full domain of death, for a vicious circle is formed and - despite individual effort - there is no way of escaping the torture of the inevitable path towards death.

Computer-Aided, Multi-Modal, and Compression Diffuse Optical Studies of Breast Tissue

Diffuse Optical Tomography and Spectroscopy permit measurement of important physiological parameters non-invasively through ~10 cm of tissue. I have applied these techniques in measurements of human breast and breast cancer. My thesis integrates three loosely connected themes in this context: multi-modal breast cancer imaging, automated data analysis of breast cancer images, and microvascular hemodynamics of breast under compression. As per the first theme, I describe construction, testing, and the initial clinical usage of two generations of imaging systems for simultaneous diffuse optical and magnetic resonance imaging. The second project develops a statistical analysis of optical breast data from many spatial locations in a population of cancers to derive a novel optical signature of malignancy; I then apply this data-derived signature for localization of cancer in additional subjects. Finally, I construct and deploy diffuse optical instrumentation to measure blood content and blood flow during breast compression; besides optics, this research has implications for any method employing breast compression, e.g., mammography

A Survey of Operating Systems Infrastructure for Embedded Systems

    Get PDF
Since early applications in the 1960s, embedded systems have come down in price and there has been a dramatic rise in processing power and functionality. In addition, embedded systems are becoming increasingly complex. High-end devices, such as mobile phones, PDAs, entertainment devices, and set-top boxes, feature millions of lines of code with varying degrees of assurance of correctness. Nowadays, more and more embedded systems are implemented in a distributed way, a wide range of high-performance distributed embedded systems have been designed and deployed. As a lot of aspects of embedded system design become increasingly dependent on the effective interaction of distributed processors, it is clear that as much effort needs to be focused on software infrastructure, such as operating systems, with respect to how to provide functionality in order to fulfill these requirements. This technical report presents some of the approaches associated to operating systems that have been used in order to fulfill these needs.CAPES/MEC - Brasil, Project BEX3342/08-

Cascading Outages Detection and Mitigation Tool to Prevent Major Blackouts

    Get PDF
Due to a rise of deregulated electric market and deterioration of aged power system infrastructure, it become more difficult to deal with the grid operating contingencies. Several major blackouts in the last two decades has brought utilities to focus on development of Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) systems. Availability of common measurement time reference as the fundamental requirement of WAMPAC system is attained by introducing the Phasor Measurement Units, or PMUs that are taking synchronized measurements using the GPS clock signal. The PMUs can calculate time-synchronized phasor values of voltage and currents, frequency and rate of change of frequency. Such measurements, alternatively called synchrophasors, can be utilized in several applications including disturbance and islanding detection, and control schemes. In this dissertation, an integrated synchrophasor-based scheme is proposed to detect, mitigate and prevent cascading outages and severe blackouts. This integrated scheme consists of several modules. First, a fault detector based on electromechanical wave oscillations at buses equipped with PMUs is proposed. Second, a system-wide vulnerability index analysis module based on voltage and current synchrophasor measurements is proposed. Third, an islanding prediction module which utilizes an offline islanding database and an online pattern recognition neural network is proposed. Finally, as the last resort to interrupt series of cascade outages, a controlled islanding module is developed which uses spectral clustering algorithm along with power system state variable and generator coherency information

Social Work and Sustainable Development Goals: Role of Social Workers in Improving Well-Being for Residents of Nursing Homes in Malaysia

    Get PDF
The traditional role of social work includes but not limited to addressing issues of inequality, violence, substance abuse, isolation, discrimination and social well-being. The values and principles of the SDG are geared towards the creation of a cohesive and equitable society in a more transformative manner. In addressing social well-being, nursing homes are set up for people who do not need to be hospitalize but cannot be cared for at home. These people are supposed to be managed by professional and skilled nurses, doctors and social workers. As such, this study focuses on the services and advocacy of social workers to help nursing homes achieve an improved sense of well-being. To get relevant data, Google Scholar was used as a tool to access the major databases provided by Tailor and Frances, Emerald, Elsevier, Springer, Sage and others. The study found that the service and advocacy of social workers produce a significant impact on the individuals at nursing homes. The study contributes to knowledge by critically exploring and synthesizing the role of social work in response to welfare services to reduce inequality, enhance good health and wellbeing of the people in nursing homes as indicated in SDGs 3 and 10
