    An Estimation and Analysis Framework for the Rasch Model

    The Rasch model is widely used for item response analysis in applications ranging from recommender systems to psychology, education, and finance. While a number of estimators have been proposed for the Rasch model over the last decades, the available analytical performance guarantees are mostly asymptotic. This paper provides a framework that relies on a novel linear minimum mean-squared error (L-MMSE) estimator which enables an exact, nonasymptotic, and closed-form analysis of the parameter estimation error under the Rasch model. The proposed framework provides guidelines on the number of items and responses required to attain low estimation errors in tests or surveys. We furthermore demonstrate its efficacy on a number of real-world collaborative filtering datasets, which reveals that the proposed L-MMSE estimator performs on par with state-of-the-art nonlinear estimators in terms of predictive performance.Comment: To be presented at ICML 201

    Rasch Model and Multidimensional Poverty Measurement

    The topic of the multidimensionality of poverty is currently at the heart of many theoretical, empirical and institutional debates in the European Union. Despite this increasing interest, there seems to be no consensus on how to define and measure multidimensional poverty. Two aspects may be considered in measuring poverty: the number of dimensions and the nature of the underlying continuum. The question of the dimensionality of poverty, one versus many dimensions, has to be resolved in applying specific multidimensional methods, like factor analysis, where the one-dimensional solution is a special case of the multidimensional procedure. The question of the nature of the continuum concerns the relationship between the items in each dimension. Two kinds of relationship are considered here: homogeneous and hierarchical. In this paper, the interest of the Rasch model for verifying the hierarchical and cumulative nature of the relationship between the items is underlined. After presenting the main characteristics of the model, and its adjustment for testing poverty, an application confirming the multidimensional nature of poverty is performed on a Luxemburgish dataset (PSELL-3).multidimensional poverty ; Rasch model ; accumulation of disadvantages

    A probabilistic threshold model: Analyzing semantic categorization data with the Rasch model

    According to the Threshold Theory (Hampton, 1995, 2007) semantic categorization decisions come about through the placement of a threshold criterion along a dimension that represents items' similarity to the category representation. The adequacy of this theory is assessed by applying a formalization of the theory, known as the Rasch model (Rasch, 1960; Thissen & Steinberg, 1986), to categorization data for eight natural language categories and subjecting it to a formal test. In validating the model special care is given to its ability to account for inter- and intra-individual differences in categorization and their relationship with item typicality. Extensions of the Rasch model that can be used to uncover the nature of category representations and the sources of categorization differences are discussed

    Governance strategies in sustainable campus using Rasch model

    In moving towards sustainability, university needs to establish a good governance strategy which practices to transform a positive sustainable culture toward successful green campus. Howe ver, due to constraint of knowledge and commitment regarding sustainability integration has caused weakness in the implementation of green concept in majority of Malaysian universities. This paper is presents one of the five dimensions of a developed hypot hetical integrated sustainable campus model which is university governance. The university governance dimension consists of 5 constructs and 23 items which are strategies for the university to be complied. These strategies were uncovered using questionnair e survey with 35 selected experts who are currently active in sustainable campus activities and researches. Collected data from this survey was analysed using Rasch method in Winstep software to measure items reliability, separation index, items polarity, item fit and item person map. Results from the analysis indicated that 19 strategies were significant to be implemented. Thus, it provides good information for universities to adopt these sustainable campus strategies in making their campus as a role mode l for a sustainable and conducive living environment

    How Does Rasch Model Reveal Dishonesty between Coastal Students and Easy Grammar Test?

    Academic dishonesty can occur with the supports of the technology devices and it also can be prevented with the help of the technology with its applications like Rasch Model. It can give detail information of the analyzed data and can trace the academic dishonesty like cheating. The aims of this research are to (1) analyze the grammar test items whether they are difficult items or easy ones using Rasch Model, (2) know the percentage of those who are assumed to do cheating based upon their origins and sex, and (3) expose their patterns in working on the grammar test in the form of multiple choice through the Rasch Model analysis. The researcher hypothesized that the academic dishonesty i.e. cheating was undergone by students who are from rural and urban areas of Riau Archipelago Province. The results of this research were: (1) through the students’ responses analyzed by Rasch Model, the grammar test was for medium ability, (2) The Rasch Model revealed that the percentage came to the number 5.71% or 4 of 70 students who were identified to cheat while working on the grammar test. They were two female students from rural area and the other two male students from urban area, and (3) The Rasch Model revealed that their responses did not represent their ability. The Rasch Model has helped the researcher to exposes the cheating deeds on exams.     This is a descriptive qualitatif research about quality assurance evaluation. the research aims to introduce analyzing using Rasch model to evaluate higher education institution based on quality assurance standars that have been developed to evaluate each member including instructor and staff in higher education institution. The instrument have been developed to conduct the experiment to provide raw data sample to doing practical analyzing using Rasch model in this research. The first part of this research will explain definition of the quality assurance and Rasch model analysis. The second part of this research will show introduction analysis using Rasch model to analysis sample data. The third part of this research will show a brief summary of the result and important finding in evaluation of higher assurance. Analyzing data of evaluation quality assurance using Rasch model will help higher educational institutions to increase and develop their quality assurance to be better higher educational institution

A definition of reliability in the Rasch model is proposed and the connection to the classical definition of reliability is shown. As a modification of the classical estimator Cronbach's alpha, a new estimator logistic alpha is proposed. Finally, the properties of the new estimator are studied via simulations in the Rasch model
