    Enhanced Queue Management Mechanism for Differentiated Services Networks

    In the Internet, it is supposed that all connections are treated equally in the network. Due to the limitation of network resources are limited, providing guarantees on performance measures imposes declining new connections if resources are not available. Assigning network resources to connections according to their classes requires differentiating between the connection classes. For this reason, the Differentiated Services (DiffServ) has been proposed. Many of the QoS mechanisms have been developed which allow different services carried by the Internet to co-exist. Many of these mechanisms were both complex and failed to scale to meet the demands of the Internet. MRED is the common mechanism used in DifJServ routers. It suflers from large queue length variation and untimely congestion detection and notification. These consequences cause performance degradation due to high queuing delays and high packet loss. In this project, enhanced version of MRED is developed to improve the performance of Diffserv networks that use TCP as the transport layer protocol. Enhanced MRED includes average packet arrival rate when computing the packet drop probability. Enhanced MRED showed a good pedonnance compared to that of MRED, in term of fast congestion detection and notification. The limitation of the new mechanism is that it works only with responsive connections which play a big role in avoiding and controlling the congestion. The major contribution of this project is to provide an improved queue management mechanism for Diffserv networks that responds to congestion more quickly, delivers congestion notification timers, and controls the queue length directly to congestion which results in minimizing queue length variation. All these would help improve the DlffServ networks performance

    Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse ont pour but d'améliorer la couche transport de l'architecture réseau de l'OSI. La couche transport est de nos jour dominée par l'utilisation de TCP et son contrôle de congestion. Récemment de nouveaux mécanismes de contrôle de congestion ont été proposés. Parmi eux TCP Friendly Rate Control (TFRC) semble être le plus abouti. Cependant, tout comme TCP, ce mécanisme ne prend pas en compte ni les évolutions du réseau ni les nouveaux besoins des applications. La première contribution de cette thèse consiste en une spécialisation de TFRC afin d'obtenir un protocole de transport avisé de la Qualité de Service (QdS) spécialement défini pour des réseaux à QdS offrant une garantie de bande passante. Ce protocole combine un mécanisme de contrôle de congestion orienté QdS qui prend en compte la réservation de bande passante au niveau réseau, avec un service de fiabilité totale afin de proposer un service similaire à TCP. Le résultat de cette composition constitue le premier protocole de transport adapté à des réseau à garantie de bande passante. En même temps que cette expansion de service au niveau réseau, de nouvelles technologies ont été proposées et déployées au niveau physique. Ces nouvelles technologies sont caractérisées par leur affranchissement de support filaire et la mobilité des systèmes terminaux. De plus, elles sont généralement déployées sur des entités où la puissance de calcul et la disponibilité mémoire sont inférieures à celles des ordinateurs personnels. La deuxième contribution de cette thèse est la proposition d'une adaptation de TFRC à ces entités via la proposition d'une version allégée du récepteur. Cette version a été implémentée, évaluée quantitativement et ses nombreux avantages et contributions ont été démontrés par rapport à TFRC. Enfin, nous proposons une optimisation des implémentations actuelles de TFRC. Cette optimisation propose tout d'abord un nouvel algorithme pour l'initialisation du récepteur basé sur l'utilisation de l'algorithme de Newton. Nous proposons aussi l'introduction d'un outil nous permettant d'étudier plus en détails la manière dont est calculé le taux de perte du côté récepteur. ABSTRACT : This thesis presents three main contributions that aim to improve the transport layer of the current networking architecture. The transport layer is nowadays overruled by the use of TCP and its congestion control. Recently new congestion control mechanisms have been proposed. Among them, TCP Friendly Rate Control (TFRC) appears to be one of the most complete. Nevertheless this congestion control mechanism, as TCP, does not take into account either the evolution of the network in terms of Quality of Service and mobility or the evolution of the applications. The first contribution of this thesis is a specialisation TFRC congestion control to propose a QoS-aware Transport Protocol specifically designed to operate over QoS-enabled networks with bandwidth guarantee mechanisms. This protocol combines a QoS-aware congestion control, which takes into account networklevel bandwidth reservations, with full reliability in order mechanism to provide a transport service similar to TCP. As a result, we obtain the guaranteed throughput at the application level where TCP fails. This protocol is the first transport protocol compliant with bandwidth guaranteed networks. At the same time the set of network services expands, new technologies have been proposed and deployed at the physical layer. These new technologies are mainly characterised by communications done without wire constraint and the mobility of the end-systems. Furthermore, these technologies are usually deployed on entities where the CPU power and memory storage are limited. The second contribution of this thesis is therefore to propose an adaptation of TFRC to these entities. This is accomplished with the proposition of a new sender-based version of TFRC. This version has been implemented, evaluated and its numerous contributions and advantages compare to usual TFRC version have been demonstrated. Finally, we proposed an optimisation of actual implementations of TFRC. This optimisation first consists in the proposition of an algorithm based on a numerical analysis of the equation used in TFRC and the use of the Newton's algorithm. We furthermore give a first step, with the introduction of a new framework for TFRC, in order to better understand TFRC behaviour and to optimise the computation of the packet loss rate according to loss probability distribution

    A flexible, abstract network optimisation framework and its application to telecommunications network design and configuration problems

    A flexible, generic network optimisation framework is described. The purpose of this framework is to reduce the effort required to solve particular network optimisation problems. The essential idea behind the framework is to develop a generic network optimisation problem to which many network optimisation problems can be mapped. A number of approaches to solve this generic problem can then be developed. To solve some specific network design or configuration problem the specific problem is mapped to the generic problem and one of the problem solvers is used to obtain a solution. This solution is then mapped back to the specific problem domain. Using the framework in this way, a network optimisation problem can be solved using less effort than modelling the problem and developing some algorithm to solve the model. The use of the framework is illustrated in two separate problems: design of an enterprise network to accommodate voice and data traffic and configuration of a core diffserv/MPLS network. In both cases, the framework enabled solutions to be found with less effort than would be required if a more direct approach was used

    Intelligent Network Infrastructures: New Functional Perspectives on Leveraging Future Internet Services

    The Internet experience of the 21st century is by far very different from that of the early '80s. The Internet has adapted itself to become what it really is today, a very successful business platform of global scale. As every highly successful technology, the Internet has suffered from a natural process of ossification. Over the last 30 years, the technical solutions adopted to leverage emerging applications can be divided in two categories. First, the addition of new functionalities either patching existing protocols or adding new upper layers. Second, accommodating traffic grow with higher bandwidth links. Unfortunately, this approach is not suitable to provide the proper ground for a wide gamma of new applications. To be deployed, these future Internet applications require from the network layer advanced capabilities that the TCP/IP stack and its derived protocols can not provide by design in a robust, scalable fashion. NGNs (Next Generation Networks) on top of intelligent telecommunication infrastructures are being envisioned to support future Internet Services. This thesis contributes with three proposals to achieve this ambitious goal. The first proposal presents a preliminary architecture to allow NGNs to seamlessly request advanced services from layer 1 transport networks, such as QoS guaranteed point-to-multipoint circuits. This architecture is based on virtualization techniques applied to layer 1 networks, and hides from NGNs all complexities of interdomain provisioning. Moreover, the economic aspects involved were also considered, making the architecture attractive to carriers. The second contribution regards a framework to develop DiffServ-MPLS capable networks based exclusively on open source software and commodity PCs. The developed DiffServ-MPLS flexible software router was designed to allow NGN prototyping, that make use of pseudo virtual circuits and assured QoS as a starting point of development. The third proposal presents a state of the art routing and wavelength assignment algorithm for photonic networks. This algorithm considers physical layer impairments to 100% guarantee the requested QoS profile, even in case of single network failures. A number of novel techniques were applied to offer lower blocking probability when compared with recent proposed algorithms, without impacting on setup delay time
