    Network Traffic Control Design and Evaluation

    Recently, the term bufferbloat has been coined to indicate the uncontrolled growth of the network queueing time. A number of network traffic control strategies have been proposed to control network queueing delay. Active Queue Management (AQM) algorithms such as RED, CoDel and PIE have been proposed to drop packets before the network queues become full and to notify upper layers, e.g., transport protocols, about possible congestion status. Innovative packet schedulers such as FQ-CoDel, have been introduced to prioritize flows which do not build queues. Strategies to reduce device buffering, e.g., BQL, have been proposed to increase the effectiveness of packet schedulers. Network experimentation through simulators such as ns-3, one of the most used network simulators, allows the study of bufferbloat and to evaluate solutions in a controlled environment. In this work, we aligned the ns-3 queueing system to the Linux one, one of the most used networking stacks. We introduced in ns-3 a traffic control module modelled after the Linux one. Our design allowed the introduction in ns-3 of schedulers such as FQ-CoDel and of algorithms to dynamically size the buffers such as BQL. Also, we devised a new emulation methodology to overcome some limitations and increase the emulation fidelity. Then, by using the new emulation methodology, we validated the traffic control module with its AQM algorithms (RED, CoDel, FQ-CoDel and PIE). Our experiments prove the high fidelity of network emulation and the high accuracy of the traffic control module and AQM algorithms. Then, we show two proposals of design and evaluation of traffic control strategies by using ns-3. Firstly, we designed and evaluated a traffic control layer for the backlog management in 3GPP stacks. The approach improves significantly the flows performance in LTE networks. Secondly, we highlighted possible design flaws in rate based AQM algorithms and proposed an alternative flow control approach. The approach allows the improvement of the effectiveness of AQM algorithms. Our work will allow researchers to design and evaluate in a more accurate manner traffic control strategies through ns-3 based simulation and emulation and to evaluate the accuracy of other modules implemented in ns-3

    Making broadband access networks transparent to researchers, developers, and users

    Broadband networks are used by hundreds of millions of users to connect to the Internet today. However, most ISPs are hesitant to reveal details about their network deployments,and as a result the characteristics of broadband networks are often not known to users,developers, and researchers. In this thesis, we make progress towards mitigating this lack of transparency in broadband access networks in two ways. First, using novel measurement tools we performed the first large-scale study of thecharacteristics of broadband networks. We found that broadband networks have very different characteristics than academic networks. We also developed Glasnost, a system that enables users to test their Internet access links for traffic differentiation. Glasnost has been used by more than 350,000 users worldwide and allowed us to study ISPs' traffic management practices. We found that ISPs increasingly throttle or even block traffic from popular applications such as BitTorrent. Second, we developed two new approaches to enable realistic evaluation of networked systems in broadband networks. We developed Monarch, a tool that enables researchers to study and compare the performance of new and existing transport protocols at large scale in broadband environments. Furthermore, we designed SatelliteLab, a novel testbed that can easily add arbitrary end nodes, including broadband nodes and even smartphones, to existing testbeds like PlanetLab.Breitbandanschlüsse werden heute von hunderten Millionen Nutzern als Internetzugang verwendet. Jedoch geben die meisten ISPs nur ungern über Details ihrer Netze Auskunft und infolgedessen sind Nutzern, Anwendungsentwicklern und Forschern oft deren Eigenheiten nicht bekannt. Ziel dieser Dissertation ist es daher Breitbandnetze transparenter zu machen. Mit Hilfe neuartiger Messwerkzeuge konnte ich die erste groß angelegte Studie über die Besonderheiten von Breitbandnetzen durchführen. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass Breitbandnetze und Forschungsnetze sehr unterschiedlich sind. Mit Glasnost habe ich ein System entwickelt, das mehr als 350.000 Nutzern weltweit ermöglichte ihren Internetanschluss auf den Einsatz von Verkehrsmanagement zu testen. Ich konnte dabei zeigen, dass ISPs zunehmend BitTorrent Verkehr drosseln oder gar blockieren. Meine Studien zeigten dar überhinaus, dass existierende Verfahren zum Testen von Internetsystemen nicht die typischen Eigenschaften von Breitbandnetzen berücksichtigen. Ich ging dieses Problem auf zwei Arten an: Zum einen entwickelte ich Monarch, ein Werkzeug mit dem das Verhalten von Transport-Protokollen über eine große Anzahl von Breitbandanschlüssen untersucht und verglichen werden kann. Zum anderen habe ich SatelliteLab entworfen, eine neuartige Testumgebung, die, anders als zuvor, beliebige Internetknoten, einschließlich Breitbandknoten und sogar Handys, in bestehende Testumgebungen wie PlanetLab einbinden kann

    A cross-layer middleware architecture for time and safety critical applications in MANETs

    Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) can be deployed instantaneously and adaptively, making them highly suitable to military, medical and disaster-response scenarios. Using real-time applications for provision of instantaneous and dependable communications, media streaming, and device control in these scenarios is a growing research field. Realising timing requirements in packet delivery is essential to safety-critical real-time applications that are both delay- and loss-sensitive. Safety of these applications is compromised by packet loss, both on the network and by the applications themselves that will drop packets exceeding delay bounds. However, the provision of this required Quality of Service (QoS) must overcome issues relating to the lack of reliable existing infrastructure, conservation of safety-certified functionality. It must also overcome issues relating to the layer-2 dynamics with causal factors including hidden transmitters and fading channels. This thesis proposes that bounded maximum delay and safety-critical application support can be achieved by using cross-layer middleware. Such an approach benefits from the use of established protocols without requiring modifications to safety-certified ones. This research proposes ROAM: a novel, adaptive and scalable cross-layer Real-time Optimising Ad hoc Middleware framework for the provision and maintenance of performance guarantees in self-configuring MANETs. The ROAM framework is designed to be scalable to new optimisers and MANET protocols and requires no modifications of protocol functionality. Four original contributions are proposed: (1) ROAM, a middleware entity abstracts information from the protocol stack using application programming interfaces (APIs) and that implements optimisers to monitor and autonomously tune conditions at protocol layers in response to dynamic network conditions. The cross-layer approach is MANET protocol generic, using minimal imposition on the protocol stack, without protocol modification requirements. (2) A horizontal handoff optimiser that responds to time-varying link quality to ensure optimal and most robust channel usage. (3) A distributed contention reduction optimiser that reduces channel contention and related delay, in response to detection of the presence of a hidden transmitter. (4) A feasibility evaluation of the ROAM architecture to bound maximum delay and jitter in a comprehensive range of ns2-MIRACLE simulation scenarios that demonstrate independence from the key causes of network dynamics: application setting and MANET configuration; including mobility or topology. Experimental results show that ROAM can constrain end-to-end delay, jitter and packet loss, to support real-time applications with critical timing requirements

    Large-scale simulator for global data infrastructure optimization

During the last decade, Information Technology (IT) infrastructures have grown in scale and complexity. Any large company runs many enterprise applications that serve data to thousands of users which, in turn, consume this information in different locations concurrently and collaboratively. The understanding by the enterprise of its own systems is often limited. No one person in the organization has a complete picture of the way in which applications share and move data files between data centers. In this dissertation an IT infrastructure simulator is developed to evaluate the performance, availability and reliability of large-scale computer systems. The goal is to provide data center operators with a tool to understand the consequences of infrastructure updates. These alterations can include the deployment of new network topologies, hardware configurations or software applications. The simulator was constructed using a multilayered approach and was optimized for multicore scalability. The results produced by the simulator were validated against the real system of a Fortune 500 company. This work pioneers the simulation of large-scale IT infrastructures. It not only reproduces the behavior of data centers at a macroscopic scale, but allows operators to navigate down to the detail of individual elements, such as processors or network links. The combination of queueing networks representing hardware components with message sequences modeling enterprise software enabled reaching a scale and complexity not available in previous research in this area.by Sergio Herrero-López.Ph.D

    Improving Large-Scale Network Traffic Simulation with Multi-Resolution Models

    Simulating a large-scale network like the Internet is a challenging undertaking because of the sheer volume of its traffic. Packet-oriented representation provides high-fidelity details but is computationally expensive; fluid-oriented representation offers high simulation efficiency at the price of losing packet-level details. Multi-resolution modeling techniques exploit the advantages of both representations by integrating them in the same simulation framework. This dissertation presents solutions to the problems regarding the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of the traffic simulation models in this framework. The ``ripple effect\u27\u27 is a well-known problem inherent in event-driven fluid-oriented traffic simulation, causing explosion of fluid rate changes. Integrating multi-resolution traffic representations requires estimating arrival rates of packet-oriented traffic, calculating the queueing delay upon a packet arrival, and computing packet loss rate under buffer overflow. Real time simulation of a large or ultra-large network demands efficient background traffic simulation. The dissertation includes a rate smoothing technique that provably mitigates the ``ripple effect\u27\u27, an accurate and efficient approach that integrates traffic models at multiple abstraction levels, a sequential algorithm that achieves real time simulation of the coarse-grained traffic in a network with 3 tier-1 ISP (Internet Service Provider) backbones using an ordinary PC, and a highly scalable parallel algorithm that simulates network traffic at coarse time scales

    Delay analysis for wireless applications using a multiservice multiqueue processor sharing model

    The ongoing development of wireless networks supporting multimedia applications requires service providers to efficiently deliver complex Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The wide range of new applications in these networks significantly increases the difficulty of network design and dimensioning to meet QoS requirements. Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols affect QoS achieved by wireless networks. Research on analysis and performance evaluation is important for the efficient protocol design. As wireless networks feature scarce resources that are simultaneously shared by all users, processor sharing (PS) models were proposed for modelling resource sharing mechanisms in such systems. In this thesis, multi-priority MAC protocols are proposed for handling the various service traffic types. Then, an investigation of multiservice multiqueue PS models is undertaken to analyse the delay for some recently proposed wireless applications. We start with an introduction to MAC protocols for wireless networks which are specified in IEEE standards and then review scheduling algorithms which were proposed to work with the underlying MAC protocols to cooperatively achieve QoS goals. An overview of the relevant literature is given on PS models for performance analysis and evaluation of scheduling algorithms. We propose a multiservice multiqueue PS model using a scheduling scheme in multimedia wireless networks with a comprehensive description of the analytical solution. Firstly, we describe the existing multiqueue processor sharing (MPS) model, which uses a fixed service quantum at each queue, and correct a subtle incongruity in previous solutions presented in the literature. Secondly, a new scheduling framework is proposed to extend the previous MPS model to a general case. This newly proposed analytical approach is based on the idea that the service quantum arranged by a MAC scheduling controller to service data units can be priority-based. We obtain a closed-form expression for the mean delay of each service class in this model. In summary, our new approach simplifies MAC protocols for multimedia applications into an analytical model that includes more complex and realistic traffic models without compromising details of the protocol and significantly reduces the number of MAC headers, thus the overall average delay will be decreased. In response to using the studied multiservice multiqueue PS models, we apply the MPS model to two wireless applications: Push to Talk (PTT) service over GPRS/GSM networks and the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) networks. We investigate the uplink delay of PTT over traditional GPRS/GSM networks and the uplink delay for WiMAX Subscriber Station scheduler under a priority-based fair scheduling. MAC structures capable of supporting dynamically varying traffic are studied for the networks, especially, with the consideration of implementation issues. The model provides useful insights into the dynamic performance behaviours of GPRS/GSM and WiMAX networks with respect to various system parameters and comprehensive traffic conditions. We then evaluate the model under some different practical traffic scenarios.
