This Open Access book builds on the experiences of one of the largest European projects in the domain of responsible Research and Innovation: NewHoRRIzon. It highlights the potential of and opportunity in responsible R&I to conduct innovation in a socially responsible way. Employing the methodology of Social Labs, the book analyses responsible R&I from an experience-based viewpoint and further explores the application of responsible R&I beyond scholarly and industrial interests. The contributors analyze the current European R&I landscape, provide reflection and reconceptualization of its core concepts, and project future challenges in relation to responsible R&I. The book complements the readers' line of work by providing insights on how responsible R&I can be applied by the audience, for example, in their decision-making processes

Maintenance of artificial turf-putting research into practice

© 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.Artificial turf is successfully utilized around the world for many sports and many levels of performance and competition requirement. Quality assurance systems for elite and community level demand effective maintenance programmes to ensure adequate play performance, with increasing regulation and auditing in the UK. Past research is, however, very limited in this important aspect of artificial turf science. Practical experience is relied upon to plan for and deliver a range of maintenance techniques to sweep, clean, decompact, replace and repair artificial turf carpets and infills. Validation of these techniques has yet to be comprehensively undertaken and reported. The authors have collaborated with an industry maintenance provider over a 4 year period focussed on measuring the effectiveness of common maintenance practice. This paper aims to present an overview of the data and outcomes of detailed studies into power-sweeping, decompaction, and decontamination, in light of temporal pitch monitoring of changes in play performance. The field data provide a unique insight into the short-term and long-term benefits of these intervention processes. The data permit quantitative analysis of key issues such as: the build-up of contamination that clogs infill and can lead to surface flooding; compaction of infill under player loading and how this affects the system hardness; and how loss of fibre resilience influences ball roll behaviour. The results demonstrate that, for example, the monthly power-brushing of a surface may effectively reduce the rate of build-up of contamination by more than 1% per year. This alone can potentially add several years' playing life to a sand-filled pitch before costly deep cleaning or removal of the contaminated infill is required

Putting research into practice: An exploration of Sheffield iSchool approaches to connecting research with practice

The relationship between research and practice in the work of members of the University of Sheffield's Information School (iSchool) was examined through a mixed-methods study carried out in two stages. Two focus groups with doctoral students and faculty members explored motivations for undertaking research, views about the impact of research, and the role of social media in its dissemination. Personal enjoyment and pursuit of knowledge for its own sake emerged as strong motivators but were also linked with expressing professional identity and contributing something useful to practice in the field. Differing stakeholder definitions of research impact were perceived as problematic, and multiple channels of communication were advocated, including judicious use of professional and social networks. A content analysis of journal articles written by iSchool faculty collected qualitative and quantitative data on the subject matter, methodology, references, and other dimensions of published output, including statements relating the research to practice. Published outputs highlighted diversity in the methods used, demonstrated collaboration with practitioners in conducting and communicating research, and identified five distinct ways of connecting research with practice. The study concludes with ten recommendations for strengthening the research-practice relationship in library and information studies. © 2013 The Board of Trustees, University of Illinois

Alien plants in Poland : research directions and putting the results into practice

The aim of this study was: (i) to complete and verify the prior review of research on alien plants conducted in Poland and the practical use of their results, and (ii) to attempt to assess the contribution of the research from the area of Poland to the research conducted on an international level. The analysis was performed based on the information gathered during a literature search which covered the last 200 years, using over 1400 publications out of the 3000 which were available in the pool. As a result, the main areas of biological sciences in the context of the research undertaken on alien plants in Poland (distribution, ecology and biology of the species), the most common thematic studies (new species, new localities, and lists of alien species), and the most often investigated species, as well as tendencies over time were indicated. Although studies on the migration and distribution of alien plants in Poland have over 100 years of tradition, and the part of the studies conducted by Polish researchers contributes to the international scale research, it is still necessary to further analyse many issues and answer numerous questions

Driving safety: enhancing communication between clients, constructors and designers

This paper, which stems from qualitative research undertaken by the CRC for Construction Innovation in the context of the development of a Guide to Best Practice for Safer Construction in the Australian construction industry, investigates the communication relationship between the client, designer and constructor, and identifies the conditions under which effective communication takes place. Previous research has made little headway with respect to putting into practice strategies that have the potential to improve communication between the client, designer and constructor. This paper seeks to address this ongoing problem. From analysis of client, designer and constructor interviews that form part of industry-selected case studies reflecting excellence in OHS, best-practice tools that have the potential to enhance multi-party communication between the client, designer and constructor are presented. This research also informs the development of workable implementation strategies
